As we approach the end of the Liturgical Year, we begin to hear more about being ready for the Coming of the Lord. Gathered here today on a November day, it is easy to imagine things drawing to a conclusion. Even as we prepare for the cold, so too must we prepare for the Lord’s Day, whenever it comes. As one wise person said, the best way to get ready is to be ready. Let us pray today for the wisdom to be ready. Wise and foolish investments, banks, even interest rates–––today’s parable permits no escape from life in the real world or from the fact that it will one day end. Those planning to be ready for the Lord’s return can’t just hang around waiting. Again, today’s Old Testament reading illumines the Gospel. Proverbs’ worthy wife is praised neither for good looks nor gracious manners, but for her industry, skill, conscientious development of God-given gifts, and generosity in serving others with them. The contrast with the parable’s cautious servant could hardly be more striking. Thus, Proverbs’ wife confirms the first two servants’ resourcefulness in developing their talents. Note that while talent in Proverbs means what we mean by the word, St. Matthew’s talent refers to an astronomical sum of money, equivalent to twenty years’ wages! Today, when so much hard-earned, carefully invested money has evaporated, our true wealth is more clearly defined by Proverbs’ talents: our abilities, natural or acquired, skills, studiously perfected, generously shared. Lest we, like the lazy servant, think our Master too demanding, note there is no mention of the Master taking back the sum entrusted to the first two servants or the profit they made with it. Rather, the cautious servant’s fate serves to jolt us out of the peace-and-security complacency St. Paul warns against. Rather than caution, the Christian community and individual disciples must undertake creative, even daring initiatives for the Kingdom, take a chance on the wealth the Master has invested in us, and encourage others to do the same. ++++++++++++ I thank the Norat and Potts families for being so gracious and generous to fly-up Father Augustine Hartman to concelebrate and preach at last Thursday's Funeral Mass for long-time parishioner, Manuel Norat. Father Augustine loved the late Manuel and Lilliana Norat. May they rest in peace. Thanksgiving Day Road Closures The annual Turkey Trot will be Thursday, November 27. The roads of the race course will be closed from 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. In general, the race will be around the Park Strip and south on A Street to 16th Avenue. Most crossings will be closed. C, E, I, and L Streets will have crossing guards, but very little traffic will be able to cross between 11:00 a.m. 12:00 noon. To avoid road closures, use Gambell Street when coming to Mass that day. More information can be found at www.skinnyraven.com/races/turkey-trot/. Respect for Life Advance Medical Directives (part 2) The safest option is to designate a healthcare agent who not only understands our Catholic values but also shares them and can apply them to current situations and respond to questions as they arise. This person, usually a close family member or a friend, acts as a proxy decision maker if the patient is unable to make his or her own decisions. In choosing an agent or proxy, a person can declare in writing that all treatment and care decisions made on their behalf must be consistent with and not contradict the moral teachings of the Catholic Church. - Respect Life Month 10-2014 (Entire article available in vestibule) Liturgical Schedule and Mass Readings Sunday - Nov 16 Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Proverbs 31:10-13, 19-20, 30-31; Ps 128:1-5; Thessalonians 5:1-6; Matthew 25:14-30 - Dominican Philippians 3:17-21, 4:1-3; Matthew 9:18-26 Monday St. Elizabeth of Hungary - Nov 17 Revelation 1:1-4; 2:1-5; Luke 18:35-43 Tuesday St. Rose Philippine Duchesne - Nov 18 Revelation 3:1-6, 14-22; Luke 19:1-10 Wednesday Feria, Thirty-Third Week in Ordinary Time - Nov 19 Revelation 4:1-11; Luke 19:11-28 Thursday Feria, Thirty-Third Week in Ordinary Time - Nov 20 Revelation 5:1-10; Luke 19:41-44 Friday Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary - Nov 21 Revelation 10:8-11; Luke 19:45-48 Saturday St. Cecilia - Nov 22 Revelation 11:4-12; Luke 20:27-40 Sunday Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe - Nov 23 Ezekiel 34:11-12, 15-17; Psalm 23:1-3, 5-6, 1 Corinthians 15:20-26, 28; Matthew 25:31-46 - Dominican Colossians 1:9-14; Matthew 24:15-35 Mass Intentions Saturday - Nov 15 Sunday - Nov 16 9:00 a.m. 5:30 p.m. 7:30 a.m. 9:30 a.m. 12:00 p.m. 2:00 p.m. 4:00 p.m. 6:00 p.m. Monday 7:00 a.m. - Nov 17 12:10 p.m. Tuesday 7:00 a.m. - Nov 18 12:10 p.m. Wednesday 7:00 a.m. - Nov 19 12:10 p.m. Thursday 7:00 a.m. - Nov 20 12:10 p.m. Friday 7:00 a.m. - Nov 21 12:10 p.m. Saturday 9:00 a.m. - Nov 22 5:30 p.m. Sunday 7:30 a.m. - Nov 23 9:30 a.m. 12:00 p.m. 2:00 p.m. 4:00 p.m. 6:00 p.m. Holy Souls in Purgatory + Helen Houston + Fructuosa (Tosing) Labitad + Emelio Ramirez People of Holy Family Cathedral + Baby Athena Mangubat Sanchez Dewey Yeager Boelter Family (living/deceased) + Msgr.
