From Father Tom’s Desk:
33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time
The wisdom from the Word of the Lord describes for
us the qualities that make a beautiful life, one that enriches each
and all the members of the family and community. In our reading from Proverbs, we hear how a good wife is a blessing as she
uses her intelligence and skills to benefit the family household.
A worthy wife is industrious and shows care for the poor. Her
family and neighbors benefit from her good example and hard
work. Our Psalm response compliments the first reading by
reminding us of the qualities of a good husband. He is a man
who has reverence for the things of God. He is motivated by
the spiritual perspective known as “fear of the Lord”. This is a
quality that guides us to want to please the Lord in all our ways
because of His blessings we are privileged to share as His beloved children. The “fear of the Lord” is not wanting to disappoint or dishonor the one who loves us the way God Our Father
loves. Our fidelity to keeping His covenant commandments and
teaching our family to be faithful brings blessings to all in our
household and community.
The daily duties we perform are the opportunity to
prove our faith and love for God and neighbor. We use the resources we have been blessed with to enhance the life of all
around us. We live as faithful and true disciples of Jesus, always ready to recognize God as the giver of every good gift, we
are prepared to give an account of how we use the graces and
blessings we receive, including the gift of life itself and our intelligence, education, opportunities to work and our good health,
and many more material and spiritual blessings. We give glory
to God by our gratitude and our putting to good use what we
have been given for the benefit of one another as we participate
in building the kingdom of God.
Our Gospel passage reminds us that we will be asked
to give a personal account of how we use the blessings of God
during our life. Work well to make a difference for good with
the skills and intelligence and opportunities you have. Promote
the Gospel of Christ and His life and the virtues that identify us
as His disciples, friends of God and more members of His Holy
family. Share the joy of the Lord by being a faithful and generous good steward of the creation entrusted to our care. Be not
afraid to give an account of your service, your love for the Lord
and His creation, especially the human family we are part of and
the Christian family we are called to delight in and promote by
inviting others to join with us in living the faith and entering
into the fullness of joy and love as we move closer to Eternal
glory.
"We do not sin when we adore Christ in the Eucharist; we do sin when we do not adore Christ in the Eucharist."
- St. Augustine

THE THIRTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
NOVEMBER 9, 2014
USING YOUR GIFTS
Reading I
Proverbs 31:10-13, 19-20, 30-31 (the ideal wife)
Reading II
1 Thessalonians 5:1-6 (the need for preparation)
Gospel
Matthew 25:14-30 (parable of the silver pieces)
Key Passage
[The servant said,] “Master, you handed over to me five talents; see, I have made five
more talents.” His master said to him, “Well done, good and trustworthy slave; you
have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter
into the joy of your master.” (Mt 25:20b–21)
Adult: What gift have you not developed as you had hoped? What could you still do?
Child: What gift has God given you? What do you want to do with it?
The letters of Paul to the Thessalonians are among his earliest writings, and are driven by his belief and the belief of the entire early
Christian community that the return of Christ was imminent, and that devoting time or attention to anything else was foolish. As
time progressed, this fervor subsided a bit. Today we may wonder when we hear these readings about the coming end-times, if we
should take them to heart, if we really believe that Christ still may come upon us as a "thief in the night." Does this mean we are to
stop our long-range goal-setting, get rid of our yearly calendars and planners, or stop putting money in the college education fund?
Of course not. What it does mean is that we need to change our lives, living like children of the light and illuminating the world
around us with the light of the gospel. Then, on that day, when the details of our daily living become unimportant, we will be ready
to find our peace and security in Christ Jesus.
MAKING A LONG STORY LONGER
We might want to ask why the parable delivered by Jesus in today's Gospel--one of the lengthiest--is not followed up with an explanation, since so many of the other parables are. We could be puzzled in part by such severe punishment for a servant who did no
more than return exactly what he had been given. If he had lost or gambled or frittered away the money he had been given, then a
severe reaction might be understandable. The master, after all, had disbursed his funds to the three servants "to each according to his
ability" (Mt 25:15) at the beginning of the parable. He evidently knew the third man wasn't all that capable to begin with. Why, then,
punish him so extremely for displaying personality traits the master already knew he possessed?
WHAT IS EXPECTED
In Matthew, this is the last parable Jesus will tell his followers before his passion, death, and resurrection. Only next week's allegory
of the sheep and goats stands between this parable and the beginning of the Passion drama. So the purpose of this parable in the
Gospel is no longer merely to instruct the disciples of Jesus in matters of proclaiming the gospel, but they are meant to be, simultaneously, keys to understanding the ministry of Jesus, particularly of his pending death and resurrection into his Father's joy. We see
in Jesus an example of God's servant who lived industriously and wisely, to bring back to his Father a bountiful return. Consequently, the decision for us is to be like the second servant, who like the first (Christ, our example), does likewise, though to a lesser degree; or we may choose to be like the third, who does absolutely nothing, expends no effort in his master's service, and is forbidden
from sharing his master's joy.
