Designed for individuals who do not have a commercial
pesticide applicators license. Participants will receive pesticide
applicators General Standards and Category 24 (Ornamentals and
Turf) training.* This session will be divided into three parts:

Super Grasses for the Future &
Pain-Free Pesticide Application
Wednesday, December 10 | 8:00 am - 11:00 am
Developing Stress and Pest Tolerant Grasses: An update will be
given on the development and testing of new bermudagrasses,
zoysiagrasses, and centipedegrasses for home lawns, sports fields,
and golf courses. Included in this presentation will be research
on shade persistence, traffic tolerance, and nematode resistance.
A brief look into the economic considerations of fertility
requirements, pesticide applications, and mowing frequencies for
new grasses given by turfgrass breeders before selection will also
be discussed.
(Avoiding) Angry Dogs and Irate Customers: Differentiating
between pest injuries, pesticide-related injury, and environmentalinduced injury is difficult for trained individuals, and even
more difficult to explain to homeowners. In this workshop, the
professional landscaper’s responsibilities for pesticide application
and how to handle situations that may occur after application
are discussed. Using various case studies the participants learn
the importance of proper pest diagnosis, proper turfgrass species
identification, and how these factor into pesticide application.
Topic areas include importance of reading the label, calibration,
proper spray coverage, climatic influences, and environmental
impacts. At the conclusion of the workshop the participants
should have gained an appreciation of the preparation which
should occur prior to pesticide application that would aid in
mitigating customer complaints and avoid regulatory violations.
This workshop will also present some communication skills to
relate common problems and reasonable expectation of pest
management programs to the consumer.

The General Standards and Category 24 exams
The General Standards exam is designed to test for general
knowledge on the use of pesticides. The Category 24 exam
includes commercial applicators using or supervising the
use of restricted use pesticides, or state-restricted pesticide
uses, to control pests in the maintenance and production of
ornamental trees, shrubs, flowers, and turf.
Upon successful completion of the exam, attendees will be given
information to apply for pesticide license with the GA Dept. of
Agriculture ($95 fee for five year license). You must register for
the full two-day workshop to take the exam.

12 Water Quality and Turf Management
Irrigation Quality Matters

This workshop will provide participants with a thorough
understanding of how water quality influences daily management
of turfgrass systems. Participants will learn how to collect water
samples to ensure reliable water analyses. Water principals will be
explained, followed by management of specific water problems
including pH, pure water, salinity, and bicarbonates. Participants
will also learn about effective soil and plant management options
for specific water issues. Case studies will be presented.

Several turfgrass pathogens can become resistant to routinely
applied fungicides. We’ll discuss the nuances of fungicide
resistance, including the different types of resistance, which
diseases are most likely to have problems with fungicide
resistance, and how to delay or prevent fungicide resistance from
occurring.
We’ll also cover the various factors that affect herbicide resistance
and learn how to prevent or delay it.

Herbaceous Plants for Southern Landscapes

Plant diseases can often be prevented by eliminating one of the
three primary causal components: plant, pathogen, environment.
Understanding the interaction between these three factors is
crucial to preventing disease development in the landscape.
This talk will review the most common problems encountered in
home landscapes (trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals - Boxwood
blight, rose rosette, Leyland cypress disease) over the past year
based on the diagnoses made at UGA, along with new diseases
just beginning to make their appearance in the landscape.
Strategies of how to best manage these problems will be discussed.

them. Although many control options will be discussed, major
emphasis will be placed on chemical weed control options. Also

days of training in residential paver installation. A Residential
Paver Technician designation can be earned by meeting
