What is a GMO?
• Insertion of DNA material from outside the
organism into the plant's DNA sequence
• Confer desired traits on plants: Herbicide
tolerance and/or virus or insect resistance
Terminology
Example: Roundup Ready - AgraStrip GMO RUR
• Event name: Unique DNA recombination event NK603
• Trade name: Roundup Ready (Monsanto)
• Trait: Novel characteristic = Glyphosate herbicide tolerance
• Inserted Gene: Responsible for novel trait CP4 EPSPS
• Protein detected: Protein encoded by the inserted gene
and detected by Strip Tests - CP4 EPSPS
• Rapid test: AgraStrip RUR Bulk Grain - TraitChek
Why test for GMOs?
Necessary for many producers/traders/manufacturers to
• meet specified regulatory requirements
• meet commercial contract requirements
• ensure internal quality control
Regulatory requirements EU:
• which GM events may be cultivated
• which GM events may be imported for food/feed
• under which conditions labeling is required for
products containing genetically modified ingredients
GMO - Analysis
Testing Options
DNA:
• The introduction of foreign DNA into a
recipient plant’s DNA (genetic engineering)
• Equipment: PCR, Gel-electrophoresis
• Laboratory Environment
Protein:
• The information coded in DNA is translated
into protein that performs the function
specified by the DNA
• Antibodies for detection
• Inexpensive equipment
Genetic Analysis
(DNA analysis)
• Genetic analysis is a GMO testing method
that detects the presence of a transgene in a
plant cell’s genome
• The specific GMO test used in this method is
called the Polymerase Chain Reaction
(PCR Test)
• Performed in a laboratory setting
• Appropriate for qualitative or quantitative
testing
• Highly sensitive and specific
Immuno-analysis

•
•
A rapid antibody-based method
Measuring GMO protein in unprocessed material such as seed,
grain, or leaves
Immobilized GMO protein-specific antibodies on a solid strip
Appropriate for qualitative or semi-quantitative testing
Suitable for field testing
ELISA Test (Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay)
