Ideas for using the resource
What to do
 Trenches vocabulary PowerPoint
The slides can be:
o printed out for each learner to have their own labelled copies which will
help them as they read through the book, or
o used as a presentation for the whole class and referred to during the
lessons and/or
o completed and a few copies printed out on A4, laminated, and
available to learners for reference as required
 Vocabulary bookmark
The bookmark vocabulary has been designed to be translated into the learners’
first language as the words it contains are difficult to illustrate.
 Adapted novel
The adapted novel could be used in the following ways:
o As an alternative for EAL learners when class is silently reading the novel
o For EAL learners to read independently or with 1:1 support, preferably
ahead of the lesson
o For parallel teaching in a small group, and then linked with differentiation
to whole class activities around the text.
Other ideas for making the best use of this resource
 Learners underline or highlight any words they don’t understand
 Learners predict what will happen in the next chapter, possibly with the help of
the images, before reading chapter summary.
