Pioneerof the Nile topped yesterday=s single-session

came in at an acceptable percentage.
Cumulatively, 2,092 horses have sold at November
for $201,912,600. The average of $96,517 is up
9.7%; the median of $45,000 is up 12.5%. The
cumulative RNA rate is 21.9%. Last year it was 14.9%.
Topping yesterday=s session was a Pioneerof the Nile
colt who went to C.J.E. Stable for $85,000. The colt is
the second foal from the Churchill maiden special
winner Aqualane Shores (Friends Lake). Meg Levy=s
Bluewater Sales consigned the Feb. 7-foaled bay as Hip
2964 on behalf of breeder David Clark=s Iron Horse

AFrom the first time I saw him at the farm, I thought
he was the bomb,@ said Levy. AWe put him in this spot
because we thought he might top the day. David Clark
has been a client for a very
long time, and we=re thrilled for
him. He usually breeds to race,
but he got a magnificent
individual here and decided to
sell. The colt was very much
like the Pioneerof the Niles, and
the mare was absolutely
stunning, so it was a great
mating of breeding like to like.
The colt was tall, leggy and
correct with a great frame and
a beautiful head.@

The mare, Hip 2910, is a half-sister to the Grade I
performer She=s Cheeky (Black Minnaloushe) and had
been purchased by Dr. Hansen for $32,000 at the 2013
Keeneland January Sale.
A little while later, the 6-year-old Drumette (Henny
Hughes--Endless Parade, by Williamstown), in foal to
Tapizar, went to Highfield Ranch. The winning
Drumette, Hip 3043, is a half to GSW Drum Major
(Dynaformer) from the family of champion Heavenly
Cause. Pope McLean=s Crestwood Farm consigned both
mares.
Dr. Hansen then put on his buyer=s hat when going to
$75,000 for a Hansen son of the SP 12-year-old mare
Airizon (Boston Harbor), who sold from the Taylor Made
Sales Agency consignment as Hip 2952.
AHe had a huge overstep and a lot of presence,@ Dr.
Hansen said of the colt. Dr. Hansen purchased two
other Hansens at November, going to $45,000 for a
filly from the SP Que Bonita (Meadowlake) and to
$20,000 for a half-brother to SW & GSP Frenchglen
(Forestry) and GSP Dr. Nick (Authenticate).
AThey all had great heart scores and were great
physicals,@ said Dr. Hansen. AIt wasn=t like I=m trying to
push up his weanling prices; I really wanted those
horses.@
Dr. Hansen and the folks at Crestwood have been
plenty busy at November. When Hansen was retired to
Ashford Stud for the 2013 breeding season, Dr. Hansen
pulled out all the stops to support him. He bred about
40 foals from Hansen=s first crop and, poring over sale
catalogues and consulting with advisors, had acquired
some 60 mares to breed to the son of Tapit in his
second year. AIt was a lot of work matching up
pedigrees and physicals, but it was also a lot of fun,@
he said.
Then last fall, Ashford received a substantial offer for
Hansen from South Korean interests, and it was
announced that he would be expatriated. That left Dr.
Hansen with a few dozen mares and no stallion to send
them to.
Thus far at Keeneland November, Dr. Hansen has
offered 19 of those mares and sold 12 for an average
of $37,875. He has another 10 mares to go through
the ring during Friday=s finale. Crestwood consigns
them all.
AThe younger ones who look athletic have done really
well,@ said Dr. Hansen. AI=ve been happy with the way
they=ve sold.@
Dr. Hansen said he plans to keep about 25 of the
broodmares he purchased for Hansen and will continue
to breed out of them.
Dr. Hansen and Crestwood also brought a bevy of
weanlings from Hansen=s first crop, and the results
have been encouraging. Four of the seven they offered
have sold for an average of $76,250, led by a halfsister to SW Miss Frost (Curlin) who sold to Valparaiso
Enterprises for $90,000. Walnut Hill purchased a colt
for $85,000, Amy Boulton landed a colt for $65,000,
and James Delahooke, agent for Bobby Flay, purchased
a filly for $65,000. Dr. Hansen and Crestwood also sold
a Hansen colt at Fasig-Tipton November to Wild Card

all have really big hips; big engines on them,@ he said.
AIt's interesting, too. Most people don't know that
Hansen had a big white blaze. He was so white that
you couldn't see it. But most of the Hansens have that
blaze, and so it sort of looks like Shackleford or
something snuck in on a few of those mares [laughs].@
He added, AI've also been working with Patti Miller at
EQB, and with Jay Kilgore [at DataTrack], as well,
doing heart scans on the Hansen babies. And almost all
of them are in the top third--and many are in top
10%--of heart scores. A few were top 5%, and I
actually adjusted my RNA prices because of it.@
One that Dr. Hansen chose to take home was R Lady
Hansen, a filly who RNA=d at $140,000. AShe was just
a beautiful filly and had a great heart score,@ he said.
Dr. Hansen said he=ll offer another big group of
Hansens as yearlings next year, and will likely keep
eight or 10 to race himself.
AI just want to give people a taste of the Hansens
now, to let them know that they do look nice and so
forth,@ he said. ABut I still have several of my better
ones still tucked away, and most of them will sell as
yearlings.@
And Dr. Hansen is still hopeful that we haven=t seen
the last of his namesake in America. AIf they run like
they look, I hope Ashford will be real quick to bring him
back.@
CLARIFICATION: In yesterday's story on Gainesway's
new BreedSecure-like program, our story, taken from a
Gainesway press release, read that the difference from
Spendthrift's program was that with Gainesway, "if the
breeder's sales weanling or yearling does not sell for
the stud fee then no money is owed." That can be the
case at Spendthrift as well, where the breeder receives
first proceeds up to $6,000 for a weanling and
$12,000 for a yearling. If the horse brings less than
that at the sale, no fee is owed to Spendthrift at all.
The difference is that Gainesway sets the benchmark at

RATHASKER KEEPING GOOD COMPANY

A stockman's knowledge and understanding of land
has helped turn the Burns family=s Rathasker Stud into
one of Ireland's leading independent stud farms, and
with foals in its arsenal by the likes of its successful
first-season sire Fast Company (Ire) (Danehill Dancer
{Ire}) and the first crop of Born to Sea (Ire) (Invincible
Spirit {Ire}), the Co. Kildare nursery has much to look
forward to at next week=s Goffs November sale.
When Paddy Burns--the father of current Rathasker
master Maurice Burns as well as Lodge Park Stud=s
Seamus Burns and Newlands House Stud=s Patrick
Burns--moved from Northern Ireland to Kildare in search
of a stud farm, he had strict criteria that any potential
property would have to meet, and many farms were
considered but very few fulfilled the brief. In 1984, he
found what he was looking for in Rathasker.
That knowledge has informed the work of his sons,
and the philosophies the breeder imparted to his
children guides how they run their farms, explained
Maurice Burns, who owns the 300-acre Rathasker Stud
outside Naas, a stone=s throw from Goffs= Kill

Born To Sea has a lot to live up to, and Burns will
give him the best possible opportunity of adding to his
family's unparalleled influence on the breed.
"A lot of good stallions weren't necessarily the best
racehorses, and the best racehorses don't often turn
out to be champion sires,@ Burns noted. AA lot of
stallions do seem to come in families--if you look at
Invincible Spirit and now his half-brother, Kodiac (GB),
has come along. Similarly, Camacho (GB) (Danehill)
sired plenty of stakes winners last year, and his halfbrother Showcasing (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) is proving
very successful with his first crop. Galileo is probably
the best sire in the world and Sea The Stars is an
emerging force, so there are a bunch of good genes
there for Born To Sea and hopefully he will have the
luck he needs."
Those genes will be on display next week, as eight of
the 22 foals the farm will offer at Goffs are by Born To
Sea, while 10 are by Fast Company. The farm's Classic
winner Clodovil (Ire) (Danehill) is responsible for three of
the draft, and only one is by an outside stallion--an
Intense Focus filly. Burns picked out some of the
standout lots from a bunch of foals he describes as a
good, level group, beginning with lot 86.
"On day one we have a Fast Company (Ire) colt out
of Betty Fontaine (Ire) (Mujadil),@ Burns said. AWe raced
the mare ourselves and she was rated 93, so she was a
useful racemare. She won twice over six furlongs as a
2-year-old and was fourth in the G3 Princess Margaret
S. at Ascot in 2011. It is a family we know well and
this colt is her first foal. He is a fine, solid,
good-walking individual and a nice commercial horse."
Burns went on to point out lot 404, a Born to Sea
colt.
"Lot 404 is by Born To Sea out of Eastern Glow (GB)
(Cape Cross {Ire}),@ he said. AThis is her second foal-she has a yearling filly by Dutch Art (GB). He is a
youngish foal, being born in April, but already looks a
scopey type. He is a nice correct model and looking at
him, he has the size and scope to go on for next year,"
Burns added.
Both Eastern Glow and Betty Fontaine are catalogued
to sell at Goffs a couple of days after their sons, along
with the dam of another foal Burns has highlighted
from the Rathasker draft. Betty Fontaine is in foal to
Choisir (Aus) as lot 1388, while Eastern Glow is
believed to be carrying her second Born To Sea foal (lot
1084). Princess Banu (GB) was covered by seven-time
Group 1 winner Rock Of Gibraltar (Ire) and is cataloged
as lot 1081 as part of a nine-strong mare draft from the
farm for the Breeding Stock sale, which takes place
Nov. 21 and 22.
"Another of our Born To Sea foals is among the pick
of our draft,@ Burns added. ALot 578 is out of Undulant
Way (GB) (Hurricane Run {Ire}), and his yearling halfbrother by Makfi (GB) was bought as a foal by David
Redvers. He is a lovely, powerful colt and very elegantmoving. He has a good shape to him and is a nice

The final day of the sale sees Rathasker consign
another colt by Fast Company (lot 986) out of an Oasis
Dream (GB) mare who won as a 2-year-old.
"He is a really good, strong 2-year-old type with a bit
of length about him,@ Burns explained. AHe is the first
foal of Princess Banu, who is a useful mare from a
family that is blessed with speed. This is a pure five
and six furlong pedigree that goes back to Tina's Pet
(GB). It's a fast family and he looks to be the early
maturing type. I like him, the lads like him and the
farrier does too, so hopefully we will all be right.@

Sherman. ANow that the owners made a decision to run
him as a 4-year-old, it puts a whole different
perspective on his future.@
While the 77-year-old conditioner said he believes
California Chrome could be successful on the turf next
year, he also acknowledged that he wants to give his
trainee another opportunity to bolster his credentials for
2014 Horse of the Year honors. AIt would be a big
feather in his cap if he could win a Grade I again on a
different surface,@ Sherman remarked.

organization=s chief executive officer Christopher Kay
told a meeting of the NYRA
Board of Directors Wednesday
afternoon at the offices of
Governor Andrew Cuomo in
midtown Manhattan. Pledging to
position NYRA as a Awell-run,

announcing that they are

Kay told the Board that while
projections for 2014 called for
an operating profit of a quartermillion dollars, the true figure-Christopher Kay
based on numbers through the

month of October--would be
closer to six times that amount.
"As you may recall, we called for an operating surplus
of $250,000, exclusive of the VLT funds, for our
operating budget when we came to you last
December," Kay stated to the Board. "I'm pleased to be
able to report to you that we will do much better than
that, perhaps six times better than that, with a
projected surplus in the neighborhood of $1.5 million
for 2014."
NYRA Chief Financial Officer Suzanne Stover, who
was celebrating her birthday Wednesday, explained that
losses over the winter at Aqueduct, owing to poor
weather, were offset by an increase in the fees charged
for simulcasting, reduced labor expenses and an uptick
in revenue from the revamped Belmont Stakes Day,
which featured the Triple Crown attempt of California
Chrome and several other Grade I events in addition to
expanded entertainment offerings.
Kay went on to suggest that based on the 2015
budget, which is to be approved at the Board=s next
meeting Dec. 3, operating profits are projected at
$2.1 million for next year, while expectations are that
the corresponding figure for 2016 could be as high as
$3.2 million. Kay also announced that the 2015 budget
would be structured on a six-day racing week at
Saratoga from July 24 through Sept. 7, 2015, and that
there would be an effort to expand advance deposit
wagering beyond the state borders.
Board Chairman David Skorton and member and
prominent owner Michael Dubb lauded Kay for leading
NYRA into the black. Dubb deemed Kay=s efforts
AHerculean,@ adding that the state of New York is
seeing increased foal crops and the tracks are staging
bigger race days, including for horses bred in the
Empire State. AIf we stay where we are now, we=ll open
several lengths on the competition,@ Dubb commented.

all of the contributions you=ve made, both individually
and collectively. Governor Cuomo has elected a
talented board.@ Not all of the board members were
entirely enamored with the financial outlook. My
Meadowview Farm=s Leonard Riggio called into question
the relatively narrow operating profits, labeling the $1.5
million number Athin ice@ relative to the overall budget.
Seemingly unconcerned, Kay retorted, AWe aren=t a
grocery store.@
In the other major piece of news to emerge from the
meeting, Kay reported that, after consultation with a
variety of industry stakeholders, that the transitional
board currently in place would not make any long-term
decisions on real estate holdings--that the decision
would Abe the responsibility of the next board.@
Kay reported on and showed a video of
approximately $14 million in renovations other capital
improvements made at Aqueduct over the last 18
months.
The first portion of the meeting including a discussion
of the legal and governance structure of a new NYRA
when it emerges from re-organization. In his comments
to the Board, Senior Vice President and General Counsel
Joseph Lambert presented the requirements of the
applicable statute as well as several thoughts on how
NYRA should be structured and governed. This includes
a smaller board than the current board which
encompasses 17 members, the inclusion of the NYRA
CEO to the new Board, consideration of term limits for
Board members, in addition to possible frameworks for
committees.
AOn the racecourse she had a terrific turn of foot, a
high cruising speed and a wonderful temperament. If
these attributes are transferred to her offspring she is
sure to make a great broodmare.@
THE FUGUE TO DUBAWI
Four-time Group 1 winner The Fugue (GB) (Dansili
{GB}) will visit leading sire Dubawi (Ire) in her first
season at stud in 2015. Trained by John Gosden for
Lord and Lady Lloyd-Webber, The Fugue won the 2012
G1 Nassau S. and last year added the G1 Yorkshire
Oaks and G1 Irish Champion S. Her penultimate outing
was a victory in this

ATTENDANCE, RATINGS UP FOR 2014 BC
The Breeders= Cup World Championships had both
increased attendance and television ratings for this past
edition. The total two-day attendance was 98,319, up
4% from last year. The combined coverage on NBC and
NBCSN averaged 599,000 viewers, up 33% from last
year, with the Breeders= Cup Classic averaging
2.6 million viewers, up 24% from the 2013 figure.
Wagering on the two Breeders= Cup cards, including all
sources and international pools, was up to
$159.1 million, the fourth highest in Breeders= Cup
history. ABased on a range of positive metrics for the
event including strong field sizes, increased
participation by horsemen on an international scale,
increased television ratings and sponsorship revenue,
we feel good about the 31st running of the Breeders=
Cup and look forward to what=s next,@ said Breeders=

AL SHAQAB TO SPONSOR LOCKINGE DAY
Sheikh Joaan=s Al Shaqab Racing has entered into a
five-year sponsorship deal of G1 Lockinge S. day at
Newbury Racecourse, which will take place May 16
next year. Total prize money on the day will increase
125% next year, and the Al Shaqab Lockinge S. will be
worth ,350,000, up from ,214,000 this year.
The Lockinge card will feature seven races, including
the ,100,000 Listed Al Shaqab S. (formerly the Aston
Park S.), as well as the Al Shaqab Fillies Trial S. and the
Al Shaqab Carnarvon S., previously run the day before
the Lockinge. Those will both be worth ,70,000. A
conditions race for 2-year-olds worth ,50,000 and a
mile handicap worth ,40,000 have also been added to
the card.

AUSTRALIAN TURF CLUB REPORTS PROFIT
Al Shaqab Racing advisor Harry Herbert presents Jack Berry with a
cheque for £500,000 for the Injured Jockeys Fund. The money was
earned by pre-selected group of 20 Al Shaqab horses through the 2014
season.

For the first time since the merger of the Australian
Jockey Club and the Sydney Turf Club to form the
Australian Turf Club in 2011, that organization has
recorded a profit and further reduced its legacy in the
past financial year, according to Racing and Sports. The
Australian Turf Club turned a profit of A$3.78 million in
the last year while crowds across Sydney=s four
metropolitan racehorses increased by almost 20%. The
Club has revealed intentions to move forward with
further investments in each of its racecourses that will
include further prize money investments.
AThis result is very pleasing, and is a turnaround in
underlying profit of $8.65 million, but it=s only the
start,@ Australian Turf Club Chief Executive Darren
Pearce told Racing and Sports. AIt also shows that the
tough decisions we took and the Club=s strategic focus
over the past four years since merger are now returning
dividends. Since merger we have gone through the
construction phase of Royal Randwick, followed by
financial consolidation, and we are now in a good
position to enter a growth and investment phase as the
business returns to growing profitability, and legacy
debt is being repaid. We will soon begin work on the
Rosehill Gardens refurbishment and we are also looking
at developing land that we own around the fringes at
Canterbury Park, whilst continuing to maintain full
racing operations.@

"I've been up to see the horse. He's a fantastic

him out into the paddock while I was there and he
moved so effortlessly. He's a very athletic horse."
Waller said he plans to travel to Ireland to discuss
Adelaide=s training with O=Brien.
"I want to have a chat to Aidan to find out what we
need to do to have him ready without over-racing him,"
Waller added.

I want you all to know how profoundly grateful I am
to Rick Violette. He not only championed my idea to
start educational programs for backstretch workers he
made certain it would succeed. He gave an enormous
amount of his time to help implement our initiatives.
The Backstretch Education Fund grew out of the early
classes in ESL and vocational training that he, as a
director at NYTHA, helped me set up.
Our programs, The Groom Development Program,
ESL (English as a Second Language), and our language
lab and computer center--La Escuelita, have served
literally thousands of backstretch workers at Aqueduct
and Belmont and still continue to be a vital part of
backstretch life.
From the start in 2002 until today Rick has made
certain that we have NYTHA=s financial support and
also his own insight and guidance. I know that I have
grown tremendously as a leader as well because of his
partnership in our work.
I would like to include a quote from Rick that he gave
me to use for one of our brochures. It reflects upon
what is significant about the Backstretch Education
Fund but also says something about him. AIntellectually
the vocational training and ESL are not only perfectly
logical but a necessity on the backstretch. But all you
have to do is attend one class and see the sparkle in
the students= eyes and the intensity of their enthusiasm
and know that this is far more important than just
vocational training or ESL.@
Rick sees what needs to be done and makes sure it is
accomplished. But more importantly he wants things to
be better for others. We are very fortunate to have him
as part of the racing community.

Churchill Downs Incorporated (NASDAQ: CHDN)
(CDI) and Big Fish Games, Inc. (Big Fish), a producer
and distributor of mobile and online games, today
announced they have entered into a definitive merger
agreement under which CDI will acquire all of the
outstanding stock and equity interests of the privately
held Big Fish.
The transaction is structured on a cash-free/debt-free
basis and is valued at up to $885 million, including a
base consideration of $485 million and a potential
earn-out payment of up to $350 million based on 2015
Adjusted EBITDA, and a potential bonus payment to the
founder and current Chief Executive Officer of Big Fish,
Paul Thelen, of $50 million based on 2016 bookings.
The purchase price will be paid in cash, except for
approximately $15 million paid in CDI common stock to
Paul Thelen.
The merger, which has been approved by the Boards
of Directors of both companies, is conditioned upon
receipt of required regulatory approvals and other
customary closing conditions. Subject to the
satisfaction of these conditions, the transaction is
expected to close by the end of the year.

The Jockey Club announced today that Rhiannan R.
Vitiello will be denied all privileges of The American
Stud Book permanently, effective January 1, 2015, for
a 2012 conviction of cruelty to animals in Charles City
County, Virginia. The denial of privileges, pursuant to
Rule 19 of the Principal Rules and Requirements of The
American Stud Book, includes the privilege of
registering foals and the privileges of any registration
process for any Thoroughbred.
