Messages From Fr. Mike
As we conclude our St. Vincent de Paul ThanksGiving Food Drive this weekend, I offer my thanks once
again to all who have supported this worthy project. Many
needy area families will enjoy a nice Thanksgiving meal
thanks to your kindness. I also encourage
you to order one or more beautiful
Christmas wreaths from our Vincentians
to assist them in their work among the poor
of our community.
The deadline for
placing your wreath orders is next weekend.
Tomorrow night we will conclude our
adult study series studying the parts of the
Mass. This has been an excellent program
and attendance has been very good.
Learning more about the Mass can enhance
our love and appreciation for this beautiful
form of Catholic worship.
Advent begins in just two weeks, and many families
observe this season with an Advent wreath in their homes.
This Friday at 7 PM we are offering an Advent Wreath
Workshop in our school hall, a great opportunity to build
your own family wreath. There is no charge, and all
materials will be provided. Monday is the deadline to
register.
Next Sunday we will conclude the Church year with
the celebration of the Feast of Christ the King. In
preparation for this feast, we are offering Eucharistic
adoration in our chapel beginning on Wednesday morning
and concluding with Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament
at 3 PM on Saturday. I invite you to come and spend some
time with our Lord and Savior. We will also have a
special Eucharistic procession at the conclusion of our
11:30 AM Mass on Sunday, with a brief period of
adoration following in our chapel, and all are welcome to
participate.
Thursday, November 27th is Thanksgiving Day, and I
invite you to come to church and thank God for His many
blessings. In addition to our usual 7:30 AM Mass we will
celebrate a special Mass of Thanksgiving at 9 AM. There
will be no evening Mass that day. You are also invited to
attend the Bordentown Interfaith Thanksgiving Eve
Service on Wednesday, November 26th at 7:30 PM at the
Traveling Catholic Faith – November CD
Since this month we celebrate Thanksgiving and we
gather as family to be thankful for all God has given us, it
seemed appropriate that this month’s subject should be on
the family. Father Robert Barron from Word on Fire talks
to us about “What Makes a Family Holy”. It is pretty
deep, so you will have to keep it in your car’s CD player and
listen to it several times. As always the CDs are on the table
in the back of the church. If you can’t find any, look next
weekend as we replenish them during the week. For more

Advent Wreath Workshop
Mass and Healing Service – November 24th
Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the
church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the
name of the Lord (James 5:14).
Father Jay Bowden, a retired priest from the Diocese of
Trenton, will be offering a Mass on Monday November 24th
at 7:30 PM for healing. During the Mass, a collection will be
taken for Father Jay and his ministry. Following the Mass
will be individual prayer and Laying on of Hands for the sick.
Father Jay is a well-known speaker and ministers in the Gift
of Healing. Following the Mass and Laying on of Hands, a
reception for Father will take place in the school cafeteria.
$1,000 BINGO — Every Wednesday Night
Consolidated Fire Association (298-4761) is
hosting a $1,000 Bingo at St. Mary’s school
hall, every Wednesday evening.

Campaign for Human Development
The annual collection to support the Catholic Campaign
for Human Development will be taken up next weekend
together with our regular offering. Funds received in this

St. Mary’s Community Food Pantry
The Community Food Pantry of St. Mary’s is looking to
form an executive board. Anyone interested in holding a
position please email Jonette Tilton at [email protected].
Positions to be filled: treasurer, secretary, food drive
chairperson and volunteer coordinator. The
pantry is also looking for Thursday evening
volunteers to work every other Thursday. If we
do not get volunteers to fill this position we will
not be able to remain open Thursday evenings.
Food items needed: pasta, pasta sauce, canned
meats, canned soups with meat, and cereal.

Readings for Sunday, November 23, 2014:
Ezekiel 34:11–12, 15–17
In the first reading God speaks of how He will take care of us
as a shepherd tends his flock. Shepherd was a frequent title for
kings who cared for their people and anticipated their needs; it
was a term used by the prophets to remind kings of their
calling. Ezekiel prophesied during the exile (which partly
occurred because of the false shepherds who led the people
astray) that there will be a shepherd who will gather all those
scattered, bind their wounds, and take care of them.
Psalm 23: 1-3, 5-6
The Lord is my Shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.
1 Corinthians 15:20–26, 28
First came Adam and death, then came Jesus and life. Just as
in Adam all will die, in Christ all shall be brought to life. Until
Jesus comes again there is a constant battle going on with the
enemies of Christ and His kingdom. Stay confident in Jesus,
our Shepherd; we know who wins the final battle! All praise
to our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the universe.
Gospel: Matthew 25:31–46
Whatever you did for one of the least brothers of mine you did
for me (Matthew 25:40). When Jesus speaks of the second
coming He refers to Himself as a shepherd and His style of
kingship is one of service. We are called to follow Jesus and
to take care of the poor, the stranger, those who are ill..........

who are discerning the possibility that God may be calling them
to a life of priestly ministry. These groups are designed to
explore a priestly vocation with other like-minded men through
prayer and sharing vocation stories and experiences. The

priesthood is their vocation. They are designed to assist
someone in discovering if the priesthood is their true vocation

Advent Wreath Workshop — Nov. 21st at 7 PM
Advent is not too far away and it’s time to think about
building your family Advent wreath. A great tradition during
Advent is lighting the Advent wreath
candles during family meals. Each week, a
new candle is added until we reach
Christmas and then the center candle is lit.
The children also have a tradition
anticipating Christmas by opening a new
portion of the Advent calendar each day.
The calendar is usually put on your
refrigerator.
On Friday November 21st at 7 PM in the school cafeteria
the parish is having its annual Advent wreath-building
workshop. Bring your family and build your own unique
Advent wreath. At the workshop you will learn about the
Advent season, we’ll sing a few songs, have some
refreshments and Father Mike will bless your newly-created
Advent wreath. The children will also get an Advent calendar
for your fridge. To register for the workshop go to the parish

Open Hearts, Willing Hands
Would you like to feel treasured, loved and sincerely
appreciated? “Open Hearts, Willing Hands”, a ministry of
St. Mary’s parish, helps the elderly and disabled with
shopping, simple chores, rides and friendly visits. An hour
a week, or every other week, is usually all the time needed.
It is amazing how helping another person makes you the
one who feels tremendous joy and satisfaction!

First Penance/First Eucharist assignments were emailed to
all families this past week. Please call the office if you did not
receive the email or have any questions.
Confirmation Candidates and their sponsor or parent are
expected to attend an important meeting on Tuesday,
December 2nd in the School Hall from 6:30—8:00 PM. Father
Mike and Deacon Ron will be answering your “Catholicism
101” questions at this meeting. You will also be taking Father
Mike’s 8th grade Confirmation test. Please make sure you are
well prepared for the test by reviewing your study guides!
Food Pantry Donations for the needy in our community are
being collected every Sunday during our religious education
classes. There are receptacles in the School Hall to collect non

GET READY
The Letters of Paul to the Thessalonians are among his earliest
writings, and are driven by his belief and the belief of the entire early
Christian community that the return of Christ was imminent.
Therefore, to devote time or attention to anything else was foolish.
As time progressed, this fervor receded a bit. Today we may
wonder, when we hear these readings about the coming end-times, if
we should take them to heart. What should we do when we hear that
the day of the Lord will come upon us “like a thief at night”? (1
Thessalonians 5:2) Does this mean we are to stop our long-range
goal-setting, get rid of our yearly calendars and planners, or stop
putting money in the college education fund? Of course not. What it
does mean is that we need to change our lives, living like children of
the light and illuminating the world around us with the light of the
gospel. Then, on that day, when the details of our daily living
become unimportant, we will be ready to find our peace and security

The good news of today’s Gospel is the
extravagance of what is being given us. All
we need do is be faithful in “small matters.”
The cost of fidelity has no comparison to the
reward given.
This weekend is the last weekend to
return your food and gift card donations for our ThanksGiving Food Drive. Thank you to all who have helped to
make Thanksgiving a time of plenty for families who have
very little.
Our annual Christmas Wreath Sale is going on now.
Orders may be returned in the collection basket this
weekend and next weekend. Extra order forms can be
found at the exits of the church or on our website
www.svdpbordentown.org.
Next weekend is the last
weekend to place your order. Wreaths will be available for
pickup after all weekend Masses on December 6 & 7.
With your support, we were able to help 4 families with
$2,862 of rental assistance in October. Thank you for being
faithful to God by helping your neighbor.
