RESEARCH SEMINAR
The University of Fort Hare and the Department of Health Eastern Cape in conjunction with Lilitha
Nursing College are hosting a three-day research seminar focusing on a broad research theme
“Mentoring for Sustainable Rural Community Resilience and Public Health”. This is a research
niche area, conceived by the School of Health Sciences UFH to achieve learning and research
excellence for sustainable resilience and public health in the service of students, scholars, health
leaders/professionals and the rural communities in the Eastern Cape through a strong sustainable
mentorship process.
The presenters will share ideas in research and expertise on how to promote and build capacity as
well as empower our target communities to be resilient and self-sustainable covering areas such as:
Leadership; Mentoring; Clinical Care; Food Security; Integration of Indigenous, Modern and
Biomedical Knowledge and Techniques; Environmental Health Management; Lifestyles and Health
Promotion; and Capacity Building.
Also, there will be seminar workshops on Mentoring as a strategy for competence developing in
health; Epidemiology; Problem-Based Learning and Community approaches in Health; Sexual
Reproductive Health; Palliative Care; Finance and Economics in Health Care; Leadership for
Complex Problem Solving/SDI; Governance and Policy Making; Approaches to reduce Maternal and
Neonatal Mortality; Options for GP contracting; Diabetes in Maternal and Child Health; and Clinical
Informatics.
The seminar will feature keynote speakers on various health issues involving three international
scholars namely: Prof. Robert Ross Kydd from the Department of Psychological Medicine, he is the
Dean for the Faculty of Medical Health Sciences, University of Auckland, New Zealand; Prof. Chris
Bullen from The University of Auckland, New Zealand, he is the Director of National Institute for
Health Innovation, New Zealand; and Prof. Anne Mathews from the School of Nursing and Human
Sciences, Dublin City University, Ireland.
