Dear Woodcarvers,
Fall is in the air as I write this. No better
place to be than the Smoky Mountains
in the fall. The cool breezes bring the
wonderful sounds and smells of the
mountains. For just a little while I lay
down my carving tools and head up the
trail. After an all too short trip I am back
carving. We have a new website (still
woodcarvers.com) and some new tools and
same great service. It is hard to reduce
any prices but we have managed to reduce
some of our shipping charges. Come on

A Buffing Wheel
Solve those sharpening woes!! The wheel is made of several
layers of stiff cotton. The open layers provide more surface
area for heat dissipation. Also, the flexing action of the cloth
helps prevent "rounding" which occurs with other wheel types.
Charge up your buffing wheel and buff to a razor edge. Be sure
to lock the wheel in so that it doesn’t wobble. Fits 1/2" arbor.

Honing Strop
John’s pigskin
leather strop is one the best strops we have tried. The leather
is made very thin to help prevent the tool edge from sinking
into the leather. Any sinking action also tends to round the
edge. This strop provides one of the best ways to keep the
razor edge on your tools that is needed for best carving results.

Carving Hint (eyes)
IMPORTANT! Eyes are not holes! They are
mounds and the eye socket is quite large. Take
a look at a human skull to see what I mean.
Lots of carvers do not get the area of the eye
nearest the nose deep enough. Try carving eyes
on a flat piece of board first until you get the
technique down. The eye is same width as the
nose. The center of the eye always lines up
with the corner of the mouth.

Make sure you
keep all of the bevel
in contact with the strop
when stropping. Just lay the blade
flat on the strop and exert a small amount
of pressure on the knife so that you maintain
the correct contact on the strop. When you
reach the end of the strop be sure you turn the
blade so that the sharp edge comes up and away from
the strop. I do not recommend picking the knife up.
Just turn it over so that it is flat again and strop. Be
sure to use a small amount of strop abrasive. Do not
re-sharpen unless you nick, chip, break or have to
re-shape the blade.

We are always being asked how to remove bark from sticks.
We have found a tool that does the job with the least
effort. It is a Microplane rasp 1" wide and 10" long.

Carving Hint
Gouges cut better cross grain. Try using a chip carving
knife to do your stop cuts. It has the perfect shape. Try
not to use the point of your knife to carve or pick at the
carving with your knife. These will cause “fuzzies” on your
carving. Remember, leave details to the last. Block out and
then add details. Eyes are mounds, not holes. Always keep
your tools sharp. Dull tools tend to “jump” off the wood
and cut you.

Eli Ball Vise
Secure your carvings with the Eli
ball vise for safer, faster and easier
woodcarving.
The vice is designed to withstand
the use of a large gouge and heavy
mallet. It is made of zinc plated
steel so it is strong and rust proof.
It is light enough to be portable and can be mounted almost
anywhere. It can be mounted on carving benches using a couple
of nuts and bolts or 2 "C" clamps.
The vice has quick change release for either left or right hand
operation. Repositioning the top plate gives forward and reverse
capability. The vice has 360° rotation allowing access to all sides
of your carving. Your work can be tipped back to be near the table
or turned upside down to allow work underneath your piece. Can
be mounted underneath bench as well.
The vice can hold large and small carvings using the 2" or 3" ball.
It works well for relief carving by mounting a board on the 3" ball.
This is a high quality vice and very affordable. We mounted a
very large block of wood (see above) and pounded it. The Eli vise
held up wonderfully.
