ANDREW On November 30th, Saint Andrew is honored in many parts of the world. He is the patron saint of Scotland, Greece, Russia, Fishermen, and our Parish. Andrew was a simple fisherman who worked with his brother Peter in Galilee. One day Jesus came to him and his brother and asked them to follow Him – “I will make you fishers of men,” Jesus promised them. So the two men put down their nets and followed Jesus. Because Andrew was probably the first of the Apostles, he is spoken of as “The FirstCalled”. Jesus commanded His apostles to “go into the world and preach the gospel to every creature. Andrew did exactly as he was asked – he preached in Greece and even traveled into Russia. But Andrew angered the Romans by talking about Jesus and His message. Finally, the Romans crucified him on an X-shaped cross (a “saltire cross”). This kind of cross is called the cross of Saint Andrew. It appears on the flags of Scotland, Great Britain, and the State of Florida. As St. Andrew followed Jesus, so must we follow the call to help those who are in need. The CFA supports many programs for the needy and Religious in the Diocese of Venice. Help us meet our Goal! El es el Patrono de Escocia, Grecia, Rusia, Pescadores y de nuestra Parroquia. Andrés fue un simple pescador que trabajo con su hermano Pedro, en Galilea. Un día Jesús se les acercó a el y a su hermano y les pidió que lo siguieran – “Los haré pescadores de hombres,” Jesús les prometió. Luego ambos hombres dejaron sus redes y siguieron a Jesús. La Iglesia le ha dado a San Andrés el nombre de “Protóklito” que significa “El primero en ser llamado” porque fue el primero de los Apóstoles. Jesús le ordenó a Sus Apóstoles que “fueran al mundo a predicar el evangelio a cada criatura”. Andrés hizo exactamente esto – Predicó en Grecia, e incluso viajó a Rusia. Pero Andrés incomodó a los Romanos cuando habló de Jesús y de Su mensaje. Finalmente los Romanos terminaron por crucificarlo en una cruz en forma de “X” llamada Cruz Aspa. Este tipo de cruz es conocido como la Cruz de San Andrés. Aparece en las banderas de Escocia, Gran Bretaña y el Estado de Florida. Sigamos el llamado a ayudar aquellos que están necesitados de la misma manera que San Andrés siguió a Jesús. December 6/7 MONTHLY MASS WITH ANOINTING A Mass with Anointing of the Sick is held the first Saturday of each month at 9:00am in the Chapel for those who are ill, or those scheduled for surgery. Anyone needing this Sacrament of Anointing is encouraged to come to receive this sacrament. Our next Mass with Anointing will be held on Saturday, December 6. All physicians and priests are invited to the inaugural gathering of the Holy Alliance. The Holy Alliance is being initiated by the national Catholic Medical Association where local guilds provide a forum for Catholic priests and physicians to come together. The quarterly meetings will start with prayer, followed by a faith-based presentation. From these discussions we hope to understand and address the major moral challenges confronting the medical profession and parish life. These events will be sponsored by the SW Florida Guild of the CMA.
