1.0 GENERAL
This section of Firestone’s Technical Manual provides instructions for the installation of Firestone’s Modified
Bitumen UltraFlash systems. Reference to the Design Guide, Technical Information Sheets (T.I.S.), and other
sections of Firestone’s Technical Specifications is necessary to ensure that the finished roof system is installed
in compliance with Firestone requirements.
Extended warranties of 15 and 20 years may require special considerations with regards to fasteners,
insulations, and flashing, coating, and attachment requirements. Refer to the System Design Guide for specific
requirements.
NOTE: IF A PROPOSED APPLICATION FALLS OUTSIDE OF THIS SPECIFICATION, CONTACT FIRESTONE
ROOF SOLUTIONS FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.
1.1 JOB SITE CONSIDERATIONS (CAUTION AND WARNINGS)
A. Keep all adhesives, sealants and cleaning materials away from ALL ignition sources (i.e., flames, fire,
sparks, etc.). Do not smoke while using these materials.
B. Consult container labels, Material Safety Data Sheets and Technical Information Sheets for specific
safety instructions for all products used on the project.
C. Care must be used when installing fasteners to avoid contact with conduits and other piping concealed
in and beneath the deck.
D. Fumes from adhesive solvents may be drawn into the building during installation through rooftop intakes.
Refer to Firestone’s Technical Information Sheet “Recommended Guidelines for Application of Roofing
Materials to an Occupied Building”.
E. Store Firestone Modified Bitumen rolls on end to protect them from becoming damaged. Do not stack
rolls on top of each other.
F. Insulation must be properly stored and protected from ignition sources, moisture and damage.
G. Cold weather:
1. When the outside temperature is below 40 °F (4.4 °C), certain combinations of temperature and
humidity may cause condensation on the surface of solvent-based adhesives and primers. If this
o
condition occurs, discontinue the application until the ambient temperature reaches 45 F (7.2 °C)
and rising, and condensation no longer occurs.
2. The consistency of sealants, adhesives and primers will thicken as the ambient temperature drops.
Membranes stiffen as they cool. To minimize this phenomenon the following procedures are
recommended:
a. Start work with sealants, adhesives, primers and SBS roll goods that have been stored between
60 °F (15.5 °C) and 80 °F (26.7 °C). Insulated, heated boxes can provide the required minimum
storage temperature.
b. Complete test areas to determine if conditions will cause problems such as condensation with
the application of the material.
c. Stop the operation or change to another warm container when material becomes too thick or stiff
to mix and apply properly.
3. Do not use heat guns or open flames to dry or cure adhesives and primers. UltraFlash is a
chemically curing material that requires no heat to cure.
H. Follow all OSHA and NRCA provisions for fire protection.
2.0 ULTRAFLASH APPLICATION INFORMATION
2.1
GENERAL
A. MEMBRANE MATERIALS. UltraFlash is designed for use with SBS and BUR membranes. UltraFlash
can be used with APP granule surfaced membranes.
B. Do not apply UltraFlash Flashing to smooth surfaced APP membranes.
C. PRECAUTIONS. Avoid contamination with water or moisture. Keep all pails, cans and jugs tightly
closed until ready to use. All equipment, air supplies, and application substrates must be
ABSOLUTELY DRY. Do not apply UltraFlash in wet weather or when rain is imminent. Do not apply if

UltraFlash or the substrate to which it will be applied may become wet within four (4) hours of
application.
Allow Firestone membranes installed in Multi-Purpose MB Cold Adhesive and Multi-Purpose Flashing
Cement to cure 24 hours before applying UltraFlash Liquid Flashing.
DO NOT coat UltraFlash with Firestone Aluminum Fibered Roof Coating or any type of aluminum paint.
UltraFlash Flashing can be painted with Acrylic Base Coat for Asphalt and AcryliTop PC-100 if it is
allowed to cure at least one week before coating. Prior to coating, granules should be added to the
surface of UltraFlash while it is still wet to help adhere the coating.
COMBUSTABLE. Use UltraFlash only in well ventilated areas. Do not store or use near open flame,
sparks or hot surfaces. Keep containers tightly closed. Avoid contact with moisture or water. Keep out
of reach of children.
CAUTION. UltraFlash contains petroleum asphalt, petroleum distillates, amine compounds and or other
chemical ingredients. Adequate health and safety precautions should be observed during storage,
handling, application and curing. Refer to Material Safety Data Sheets for specific details regarding the
safe use and handling of UltraFlash.
EQUIPMENT. Apply UltraFlash with a paint brush, or trowel.
2.2 SURFACE PREPARATION
A. General: Substrates must be clean and dry with no oils, grease, moisture or loose debris. UltraFlash
Primer is recommended for use on all nonporous surfaces including all metal surfaces.
B. Concrete must be minimum 3,000psi compressive strength, and free of release agents and curing
compounds. The surface to be flashed must be clean, dry and free of contaminants.
C. Steel must have a minimum 3 mil profile. Use UltraFlash Primer for best adhesion.
D. All metals must be solvent cleaned and abraded to de-gloss the surface and promote adhesion. Use
UltraFlash Primer for best adhesion.
E. Wood substrates must be clean, dry and free of paint, and surface contamination.
2.3 MIXING - DO NOT THIN.

Five Gallon Pails
1. Begin mixing each pail with 4 gallon (15.1 L) of UltraFlash Part A using a power mixer with the
following characteristics: ½’ drill, at least 5 amp and 400-900 rpm. Caution, high speed drill motors
can burn out. UltraFlash requires a low speed, high torque motor for proper mixing.
2. Five gallon (18.9 L) pails should be mixed with an eight inch (203.2 mm) mud blade. ALL products
(except cartridges) are to be mixed for 3 minutes to insure proper and thorough mixing.
K. One gallon cans
1. One gallon (3.8 L) cans should be mixed with a 3” (76.3 mm) spiral blade. ALL products (except
cartridges) are to be mixed for 3 minutes to insure proper and thorough mixing.
L. Cartridges
1. When opening a new cartridge always point the tip up and extrude material until both the activator
and premix have mixed in the mixing tube.
2. Cartridges are mixed in the mixing tube where they receive proper and thorough mixing as long as
the cartridge is started properly; pointing up to prevent the activator from running out of the mix tube.
D. Observe the following measures
1. Fan blade or rod style mixers shall not be used.
2. Jiffy mixers may be used for one gallon cans only.
3. Never mix UltraFlash products by hand.

4. Do not thin! If part A is too viscous, it should be warmed to 70 to 90 F (21 to 32 C).
5. Do not mix water or air into the UltraFlash mixture.
6. UltraFlash Part B Activator comes premeasured with each gallon can or 5 gallon pail. Do not mix
more or less than one bottle of Part B Activator to each container of part A.

7. Store UltraFlash Part A and Part B Activator at 70 F to 90 F (21 to 32 C) for easy mixing.

2.4 COLD WEATHER APPLICATION
o

Surfaces to be flashed should be at least 45 F (7.2 C) and must be 5 F (-15 C) above the dew point.
o
o
UltraFlash should be at least 60 F (15 C) when mixed and applied. These temperatures are
recommended to consistent with published cure times, pot life, viscosity, surface preparation and
o
o
application procedures. UltraFlash can be applied to substrates as low as 20 F (-6 C). Applications
below published minimums require the following parameters be taken into account.
A. The surface must be dry. Condensation at lower temperatures happens more readily, particularly at
o
o
temperatures approaching 32 F (0 C) and with wide temperature swings over the course of the day.
o
o
Frost within the substrate must be avoided at substrate temperatures below 32 F (0 C).
o
o
o
B. UltraFlash Part A and Part B Activator should be kept at a temperature 1 F above 60 F (15.5 C) for
o
o
o
o
every degree that the substrate will be below 45 F (7.2 C). Do not heat above 100 F (37.8 C). As
fluid temperatures rise, working time is shortened.
C. All material cure times and solvent loss rates are much slower at lower temperatures. Normally
o
o
UltraFlash products cure within several hours at 70 F (21 C) however; it will take up to a week to reach
o
o
the same level of cure at 20 F (-6 C).
D. Slower cure times limit the amount of material that can be applied on a vertical surface because
UltraFlash will continue to flow for an extended period of time. Vertical surfaces can only be coated with
20 to 25 mil of material at a time. If the material is applied in a thicker layer significant sags and runs will
occur.
E. In cooler weather the viscosity of the material will increase as it approaches the substrate temperature.
The increased viscosity results in material that can be difficult to apply. Work at low temperatures should
o
o
be carried out as if the working time was considerably shorter than at 60 F (15.5 C).
F. The minimum time required between coats increases with lower temperatures and decreases with higher
temperatures.
2.5 CONFINED SPACE APPLICATION
A. Confined spaces are those spaces that are difficult to get into and out of and are not intended for
occupancy except during repair or maintenance. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration
(OSHA), state and local agencies and many facility owners have specific programs and requirements for
working in confined spaces.
B. Applying UltraFlash in a confined space may result in a hazardous environment by exceeding the
exposure limits allowed for solvents as set forth in the MSDS.
C. All confined space work should be done in accordance with federal, state, local and facility owner
confined space regulations.
3.0 FLASHING
3.1 General
A. Apply UltraFlash Flashing at a 60 mil total thickness; with 30 mils being applied below the fabric and 30
mils applied on top of the fabric.
B. The coverage rate for UltraFlash is roughly 30 square feet per gallon, in a 60 mil application.
C. All flashing must be completed using Firestone SBS Membrane and any additional membrane layers as
required by Firestone Details.
D. Remove existing flashings (i.e., metal, bituminous, mastic, etc.).
E. Flash penetrations in accordance with the appropriate Firestone Details (MB-P-7 through MB-P-9).
F. The flashing seal must be made directly to the penetration except for hot stacks. Remove all existing
flashings (i.e., metal, bituminous, mastic, etc.).
G. MEMBRANE MATERIALS. UltraFlash is designed for use with SBS and BUR membranes. UltraFlash
can be used with APP membranes that are atleast 12 months old. Aged APP Membranes must be
treated with UltraFlash Primer prior to the application of UltraFlash Flashing.

3.2 FLASHING Walls and Curbs
A. Remove all existing flashings (i.e., metal, bituminous, mastic, etc.).
B. Flashings shall be installed in accordance with Firestone Details using Firestone UltraFlash on walls,
curbs, penetrations, and roof edge materials.
C. Do not apply UltraFlash to pressure treated wood.
D. The following substrates may be flashed with Firestone UltraFlash Flashing System in accordance with
the project designer’s Requirements and Firestone Details.
 Exterior grade Plywood
 Concrete
 Metal (primed with UltraFlash Primer)
 OSB (apply to the un-waxed side)
 Other uneven substrates
E. The following substrates require an overlayment of 1/2" (12. 7 mm) exterior grade plywood mechanically
fastened and covered with an approved, mechanically attached base sheet in accordance with the
project designer’s Requirements and Firestone Details.
Gypsum board (except 1/2” (12.7 mm) DensDeck Prime)
Stucco
F. Install UltraFlash base flashings and prepare substrates as shown in Firestone Details. Apply UltraFlash
after the field membrane has been installed. Flashing shall extend a minimum of 6” (152.4 mm) onto the
field membrane.
3.3 FLASHING PENETRATIONS
A. Remove all existing flashings (i.e., metal, bituminous, mastic, etc.).
B. Flash all penetrations which pass through the membrane in accordance with Firestone Details
C. The flashing seal may be made directly to the penetration provided that it is not a hot stack or other
application prohibited by Firestone Guides, Specifications and Details.
D. Apply UltraFlash at a rate of 60 mils in two 30 mil applications, one below the fabric and one above the
fabric.
E. Flash all penetrations which pass through the membrane in accordance with Firestone Details MB-P-7
through MB-P-9 and the following.
F. If the penetration to be flashed is metal prime the metal surface with UltraFlash Primer just prior to
flashing.
G. Mix UltraFlash in the appropriate container, 1 gallon (3.8 L) or 5 gallon (18.9 L) with the appropriate
mixer blade, or by using the mixing head attached to a cartridge.
H. In a one or five gallon container, add the appropriate amount of pre-measured Part B Activator to the
container of part A and mix for 3 minutes using a drill motor and mix blade.
I. Using a paintbrush or roller, apply UltraFlash to the penetration to be flashed a minimum of 6 inches up
from the field of the roof and a minimum of 6 inches out onto the field of the roof.
J. Using a precut piece of UltraFlash Scrim Lay the scrim into the UltraFlash completely encircling the
penetration and extending a minimum of 6 inches (152.4 mm) up the penetration and 6 inches (152.4
mm) on to the field of the roof.
K. Embed the fabric into the UltraFlash and coat it with UltraFlash compound until the pattern of the fabric
is not visible.
L. UltraFlash Fabric should be smooth with no wrinkles or fishmouths.
M. Coat the area atleast two inches above the scrim on the penetration and two inches beyond the area
where the scrim extends out on to the roof surface.
N. Do not feather the edges of UltraFlash. UltraFlash edges should be equal to or greater than the
thickness of the UltraFlash Flashing application.
O. Granules may be embedded into the fresh UltraFlash compound to match the surface of the roof.
3.4 Roof Drains
A. Remove existing flashings (including metal flashings), roofing materials and cement from the existing

B. Flash drains in accordance with Firestone detail MB-D-4.
C. Provide a clean even finish on the mating surfaces between the clamping ring and the drain bowl.
D. Install tapered insulation around the drain to provide a smooth transition from the roof surface to the
drain. Slope should not exceed 1" per foot (8.3%).
E. Extend the field Base Sheet down the bowl into the clamping ring. Do not allow base sheet laps into the
clamping ring.
F. Fully adhere an SBS Smooth target patch in a continuous layer of Firestone UltraFlash.
G. Install interply sheet(s) appropriate to the desired warranty.
H. Make round holes in the membranes and align with clamping bolts.
I. Install the roof drain clamping ring and clamping bolts. Tighten the clamping bolts to achieve continuous
compression.
3.05 Pipe Clusters and Unusual Shaped Penetrations
Fabricate and secure penetration pockets in accordance with Firestone Detail MB-P-6.
3.05.1 Pipes
A. Remove all existing flashings (i.e. metal, bituminous, mastic, etc.).
B. Flash all penetrations which pass through the membrane in accordance with Firestone Details MB-P-7
through MB-P-10 and the following.
C. If the penetration to be flashed is metal prime the metal surface with UltraFlash Primer just prior to
flashing.
D. Mix UltraFlash in the appropriate container, 1 gallon (3.8 L) or 5 gallon (18.9 L) with the appropriate
mixing blade, or by using the mixing head attached to a cartridge.
E. In a one or five gallon container, add the appropriate amount of pre-measured part B activator to the
container of part A and mix for 3 minutes using a drill motor and mix blade.
F. Using a paintbrush or roller, apply UltraFlash to the penetration to be flashed a minimum of 6 inches
(152 mm) up from the field of the roof and a minimum of 4 inches (102 mm) out onto the field of the roof.
G. Using a precut piece of UltraFlash fabric, lay the fabric into the UltraFlash completely encircling the
penetration and extending a minimum of 6 inches (152 mm) up the pipe and 6 inches (152 mm) on to the
field of the roof. See the pipe flashing instructional photos in Appendix A.
H. Embed the fabric into the UltraFlash and coat it with UltraFlash compound until the pattern of the fabric
is no longer visible.
I. Coat the area at least two inches above the scrim on the penetration and two inches beyond the area
where the scrim extends out on to the roof surface. Do not “feather the edges of UltraFlash.
J. Granules may be embedded into the fresh UltraFlash compound to match the surface of the roof.
3.05.2 Hot Pipes
Protect the roofing components from direct contact with steam or heat sources when the in-service
temperature is in excess of 140 °F (60 °C). In all such cases, flash to an intermediate “cool” sleeve in
accordance with Firestone Detail MB-P-9.
3.05.3 Scuppers
A. Remove existing scupper and provide a new welded watertight scupper.
B. Flash wall in accordance with Firestone Detail MB-S-2.
C. Set welded watertight scupper in Firestone UltraFlash and secure to the structure.
3.05.4 Expansion Joints/Area Dividers
Install expansion joints and roof dividers in accordance with Firestone Specification Details.
4.0 SHEET METAL WORK
A. For specific installation instructions for Firestone Sheet Metal, refer to the System Design Guide and Technical
Information Section of this manual.
B. For sheet metal work not supplied by Firestone, refer to fabrication and installation requirements specified by
the project designer as well as industry standards.
