THE GREEN THUMB Ken Thomas Hernando County Master Gardner Gardening in Florida can be challenging. With mostly sandy soil, numerous insects and other pests, and four different plant hardiness growing zones, the state has unique features. A plant hardiness growing zone is a region in which specific plant life is capable of growing or has the ability to withstand the minimum temperature of the zone. The four zones in Florida range from zone 8 in the northwestern Panhandle region to zone 11 in the Florida Keys. Our plant hardiness growing zone in most of Hernando County is zone 9A. As many of us head for the nearest garden center with the intention of purchasing plants and trees to refresh and bring harmony to our landscapes, make sure the plant or tree is able to survive and thrive in zone 9A. Even though temperatures are still warm, begin planting for the cooler months ahead. Here are some plants that should do well in our area during the colder months: alyssum, carnation, dianthus, foxglove, geranium, nasturtium, petunia, snapdragon, sweetpea, verbena, red powder puff, golden dewdrop, thryallis, firebush and yellow shrimp plant. Many vegetables that will produce through the winter can be planted now like beets, carrots, and onions. Bedding Plants: Create a display of fall colors with cool season plants. Some to try are pansy, viola, and chrysanthemum. Bulbs: Bulbs to plant this month include amaryllis, crinum, and daylily. Plant Lycoris (spider lily) in partial shade. Plants will produce foliage in winter and beautiful flowers emerge in late summer. Herbs: Continue planting herbs from seeds or plants. A wide variety of herbs like cooler, dryer weather, including cilantro, dill, fennel, parsley, sage, and thyme. Irrigation: As the days grow shorter and cooler, increase the number of days between irrigation for your lawn and landscape. Use your system on an as needed basis not just because it is your day to water. Water deeply, but infrequently, applying 3/4 of an inch of water to the top 8" to 12" of the soil root zone. Plants need less supplemental watering in cooler weather. Lawns can go a couple of weeks or longer between watering. In the event of a frost, expect your lawn to turn from the color green to brown and stay that way until March. Do not make the mistake of applying fertilizer thinking that brown will change to green. You will be wasting time and money. Fertilizing: Hold off fertilizing your lawns and trees until March. Fertilize any vegetable plants and annuals every 4 to 6 weeks throughout the growing season using 2 pounds of 6-6-6 or 8-8-8 with micro-nutrients for every 100 square feet of growing area. Watch for aphids on your plants and treat any infestation with insecticidal soap. Remember to follow the label directions. November's Landscaping Tips Use your irrigation system on an "as needed" basis. Your plant hardiness growing zone is 9A. Fertilize roses for the last time this year. Free Landscaping Courses 11/04/2014 - Florida Friendly Plants 11/12/2014 - New to Gardening in Florida 11/26/2014 - Preparing Landscapes for Winter Call the University of Florida's Hernando County Extension Office at 352 754-4433 for times and locations of these free courses. Happy Gardening! Vegetables: Continue planting cool season crops such as beet, broccoli, cabbage, carrot, kale, and lettuce. Citrus: Some of us are growing citrus trees. Remember that fruit is ready to pick when it tastes sweet and can be stored on the tree long after it is ripe. If you are planning on purchasing a citrus tree, plant the tree in full sun away from large shade trees that might compete for water and nutrients. Also, planting the citrus tree on the north side of your house can prevent the tree from flowering too early in the spring and escape a late frost. If freezing temperatures are predicted, protect small citrus trees by watering well at least a day before the freeze. 10% OFF First Service Only $100.00 min. order 12/14 Pg 16 con’t. on page 17 FOR SALE CRIMEWATCH All For Sale items run for 2 issues. Pg 17 How To Carve a Turkey Whether you ve roasted a Thanksgiving turkey or deep-fried one in the backyard, follow these steps to easily retrieve the moist and tender meat and learn how to car ve a turkey. Use a sharp car ving knife for best results when car ving a whole turkey. While slicing, keep the turkey from moving by holding it in place with a meat fork. Car ve on a stable cutting sur face, such as a plastic cutting board or platter. Cutting a turkey is easier if it is allowed to stand for about 15 minutes after roasting. To car ve a turkey, place the turkey breast up with its legs to the right if you're right-handed or to the left if lefthanded. Remove the ties or skewers. 1. While gentle pulling leg and thigh away from body, cut the turkey through the joint between leg and body. Separate the drumstick and thigh by cutting down through the connecting joint. Ser ve the drumstick and thighs whole, or car ve them. 2. Make a deep horizontal cut into the breast just above the wing. Insert a fork in the top of the breast. 3. Starting halfway up the breast, car ve the turkey by making thin slices down to the horizontal cut, working from outer edge of bird to the center. Repeat steps 1 through 3 on the other side of the turkey. Locally Owned and Operated.
