Dear Friends,
• Senior Programs/NNORC ..................... 20
As the end of the year approaches, we reflect on what we have accomplished and what
we hope to achieve in the coming year. Both of us, along with our devoted Board of
Directors and staff, have worked hard to keep the JCC growing with new programming,
expanded services and capital improvements. 2014 has brought exciting changes —
from the renovation of our Women’s Locker Room and the building of a dedicated
Play Room Area — to the groundbreaking of our Outdoor Sports Field scheduled to
be completed in the spring. We continue to propel our capital campaign forward, with
many new plans and more goals to be accomplished in the new year.

We are here to serve YOU and strive to meet and exceed the needs and desires of the
community, continuously updating our facilities and creating new and better programming,
events and services. 2014 saw many shining examples such as the Israeli Cultural
Connection, L.I.V.E. vocational programs for young adults with special needs, enhanced
support group offerings, Mamanet, and other new sports leagues, and expanded Early
Childhood and Summer Camp programs. And there’s lots more in store for 2015!
Our goal in the coming year is to build a stronger JCC and keep the positive momentum
going. As a not-for-profit, you, our donors play a major role in helping us make this
happen. Please continue to support our JCC so that we can not only offer high-level
programs to our members, but continue providing so many much needed services to
our community. Your donation will make a significant impact on the lives of many and
ensures that we remain a strong and vibrant agency.
We thank you in advance for being our partner in this effort. Please fill out the enclosed
envelope along with your donation and mail back or drop off at the Mid-Island Y JCC.
Be a part of “Building For Our Future” and watch your “Philanthropy @ Work” in 2015.

to help make our goals a reality!
Many Capital projects have been completed during this past
year. We have renovated the women’s locker room, upgraded
our agency security, signage and overall communications,
added multimedia technology to the classrooms, upgraded our
children’s playgrounds, renovated and re dedicated our art
studio and outdoor nature classroom, plus many more internal
changes that help us to strengthen our agency. We still have a
long way to go with our capital improvements. We recently
kicked off Phase III of our Capital Campaign with a groundbreaking of the NEW OUTDOOR SPORTS FIELD, which will
be coming soon, thanks to generous contributions from our
donors and Casino Night fundraiser. All who attended enjoyed
a day of Games, Relay Races, Art Projects and some good
Music & Food. The outdoor sports field is just the beginning
of our fundraising efforts for Phase III.

Members Spanning Four Generations... All In One Family!
Be inspired!
Anne Abbadangelo is in her 80’s and is still working
part-time a few days a week for the Village of
Westbury. She swims at the Mid-Island Y JCC three
to five times a week and usually comes right from
work to exercise in the pool. “The Y is a godsend!
I am so happy that the Y is here for me! I spend an
hour in the water and feel so much better when I
come out of the pool.” Anne says it’s not just the
physical exercise that makes her feel good, “I have
my pool friends who make me feel good too. They
watch out for me, help me in the locker room if
needed — it’s a community.” Anne’s daughter, Linda,
works full time, comes after work several days a
week and can be found in the fitness center using the
cardio machines. “It’s such a warm and embracing
environment for my whole family,” says Linda.
Anne’s granddaughter Stacy is raising her daughter
Brooklyn, 7 years old, in Plainview as well. Brooklyn
attends our Second Home Day Care. Stacy is thrilled
that when she or her mom, Linda, pick Brooklyn up
after work, she’s happy, well cared for and homework
is done. “The day care staff is amazing and ALL the
JCC staff is friendly and warm. Even the security
guard, Jason, greets us with a big smile and “hello”
and asks how we are. Andrew at the Kosher Café
knows our whole family by name!”
Brooklyn also loves her hip hop class and has made
many friends in the aftercare program.
Family Workshop
Stacy has connected with the moms of Brooklyn’s
friends and looks forward to her occasional “girls
nights out!”
The JCC is here for everyone — we have four
generations, all active users and all an integral part
of the Mid-Island Y JCC in different ways!
Parking Lot Safety
For your safety and the safety of all of
our members, please be mindful of the
one-way directional signs in our parking
lot. From moms with strollers — to
seniors with walkers — and everyone in
between, the parking lot is a busy place.
Please drive carefully and be courteous.

Jaffa's Ajami neighborhood is a melting pot where Jews,
Muslims, and Christian's mingle in one of the poorest
sectors of the city. Yaron Shani and Scandar Copti’s Ajami
gives voice to a cross-section of the neighborhood’s
inhabitants: a young Israeli (Shahir Kabaha) fighting a
criminal vendetta against his family, a Palestinian refugee
(Ibrahim Frege) working illegally to finance a life-saving
surgery, a Jewish police detective (Eran Naim) obsessed
with finding his missing brother, and an affluent Palestinian
(Scandar Copti) dreaming of a positive future with his
Jewish girlfriend. But their intersecting stories lead to a
dramatic collision of different worlds and the tragic
consequences of enemies living as neighbors.

AQUATICS CENTER
MID-ISLAND Y JCC
Designed for children who aren’t ready to swim alone
or have difficulty separating from their parents. Each
class is filled with engaging and challenging games and
activities that will motivate your child to swim!
Preschool Levels Ages 3-5 yrs.
American Red Cross three preschool swimming
levels: Pre-school aged children are taught basic
aquatic safety & swimming skills while increasing
their comfort level in and around the water.
PRESCHOOL LEVEL 1
Orients children to the aquatic environment
and helps them gain basic aquatic skills.
PRESCHOOL LEVEL 2

more comfort in and around the water. They learn to fully
submerge and blow bubbles from their mouth and nose,
as well as float on their front and back with assistance,
combining arm and leg action.

comfortable in and around the water. They should be
able to perform front and back floats and glides without
assistance, as well as combine arm and leg motion on
their front and back.
LUNCHBOX SWIM
Children learn to swim and have lunch with their friends!
Drop off or picked up from class by swim instructors.
Children enjoy a 30-minute swim lesson based on the
Red Cross Early Childhood format, followed by a kosher,
peanut/tree nut-free dairy lunch supplied from home.
SWIM & GYM

Early Childhood format followed by a 45-minute

information and skills are taught to help participants
feel comfortable in the water and enjoy water safely.
Elementary aquatic skills are the foundation for future
skills and are introduced. Swimmers explore movement
in water bobbing, floating and gliding.
15+ years old by completion of course
Learn how to respond to emergencies in an aquatic
environment along with CPR/AED and First Aid training.
This certification is nationally recognized and accepted

Swimmers entering Level 2 must have a Level 1 certificate
or must be able to demonstrate all the completion
requirements in this level. Swimmers learn to float
without support and explore simultaneous and
alternating arm and leg actions on the front and back
to lay the foundation for future strokes.
LEVEL 3: STROKE DEVELOPMENT
Swimmers entering Level 3 must have a Level 2 certificate
or must be able to demonstrate all the completion
requirements in this level. Swimmers learn to coordinate
the front crawl and elementary backstroke, and

fundamentals of treading water and diving.
LEVELS 4-6:
PRE-SWIM TEAM / STROKE IMPROVEMENT
Swimmers entering Level 4 must have a Level 3 certificate
or must be able to demonstrate all the completion
