From the General Manager, Scott Sustman November. . . Veterans Remembrances, Voting and Thanksgiving As we have for many years, November will have several activities focused on remembering our veterans. Please look for the specific information inside the Newsletter and try to attend at least one of these events. Thanksgiving brings visits to and from family, in many cases. If you are going to be away, consider using the vacation watch service from the Sheriff ’s Department. And watch for signs about any changed hours of operation at the Yacht Club and the Racquet Club/Fitness Center. The Administrative Office will be closed on Thanksgiving and the day after. Turkey Trot On Thanksgiving morning you are once again invited to our Annual Turkey Trot for pre-dinner exercise! Look for additional details inside the Newsletter. Trustee Election in Walden The Candidate Forums are over and Election Day is November 1. Please vote on the internet, accessing the voting website by going to www. WaldenOnLakeConroe.com and clicking on the red Vote Now button. We are electing two Trustees from the five candidates. Voting ends at 5 p.m. on November 1. Vote in the General Election Several elections are taking place for National, State and County Offices, as well as several Propositions. Election Day is November 4, and our Precinct will vote at the MISD building on Walden Road. If you have not voted early, please take the time to vote on November 4. Dr. Jones Health Presentation on Thursday, November 6 “The Smoldering Cause of Age-related Diseases Will Kill You.” Age-related diseases cause 92% of American deaths and 99% of disability in people over 65 years. Most, if not all, agerelated diseases share a root cause, which, if understood, can be modified for the better. Rick’s delicacies will be served at noon for $15 and the free talk will begin at 12:45 p.m. Make reservations to assure your place. Pay Fees On-Line Many of our residents are using our website, WaldenOnLakeConroe.com and PayLease to pay their fees on-line. You may pay by credit card for a fee, or use your checking account and your bank’s routing number to pay for free. This is only available to anyone who is “current” on their maintenance fees. Of course, you may always mail the payment using the envelope provided, drop by with the payment at the Administration office, 13301 Walden Road. Great Results for the Walden Blood Drive Walden again set a record this year in our blood drive, contributing 213 units of blood in a single day. While the change of season has brought us some needed rain and cooler temperatures the local real estate market is still hot! There were 31single-family home sales closed for the month of September. The 31 sold in September puts us at 230 sold for the year and well ahead of last year’s 192 for the same time period! The 230 sold also is just behind the pace of 232 sold during the same time period in 2006…Walden’s most active sales year ever! Walden’s inventory of homes still stands at less than 3 months (as of 10/7/14)…if you have been waiting, now is the time to sell!! We are in the midst of a very active local market and the only thing holding us back is a lack of inventory! There are currently only 30 move-in ready, non-waterfront homes available in Walden. There are 27 single family homes pending to close for the month of October. Interest rates have remained low and more and more people are moving to the area! The word is out….Walden is a great place to live! Whether you are buying or selling a home we can help you make an informed decision. Margie Barlow Montgomery County Master Gardener (2002) [email protected] I hope when you read this article I’ve hit on all cylinders. I’m actually writing this on August 31. Remember I have to have my articles in one month in advance and since I was on vacation, I’m going to have to wing it. I hope everyone did their fertilization in October, if you didn’t please do it now. Last month I told you to plant your mums (dead head spent blooms to push out new blooms). Now you can also incorporate more cool season annuals like pansies. What the heck, add some snapdragons and dianthus to the mix. I usually don’t have a lot of luck with my snapdragons coming back but my dianthus are real troopers. Cajun Lawn Care James Veillon Sr. Phone: 936-689-8905 License # 0018745 Email: [email protected] We live and work in Montgomery County, so why not put your trust in a neighbor…. Bryan Williamson With the trees shedding their leaves, don’t have your yard guys bag them. They can either mow (mulch) them or apply them to your flower beds. This will give you an added layer of protection and they will decompose in time. There are a few leaves that you do want to avoid which are pecans, live oak and hickory as these have too much tannin (tannic acid). If our October was mild and your potted plants are still doing well, now is the time to consider shifting them to a more protected area in case of extreme cold. You will also want to reduce watering to maybe once every week or two. We tend to over water potted plants in the winter and then wonder why we have to replace the rotted things in the spring. You would think we would learn our lesson. This is also the time to turn your sprinkler system OFF. Let Mother Nature take care of our watering. Tip of the Month: This is a great time to plant parsley and cilantro in pots to use for cooking during the winter. Have a great Thanksgiving! The final tally from the October 4th event was 213 units of blood collected (from 257 participants, of whom 44 unfortunately proved to be ineligible this year). Although this is MD Anderson's highest tally for any of their blood drives, we were informed that this supply will be completely consumed within a few days. CERTIFIED PROFESSIONAL DOG TRAINERS & ANIMAL BEHAVIOR CONSULTANTS Thanks are due to everyone involved, especially the donors and our volunteers. Increased participation is reflected by the number of appointments (203) and the number of walk-in guests (100). The appointment increase from previous years is attributed to an intensive telephone solicitation process, the institution of a dedicated Walden Blood Drive e-mail address ([email protected]), personal contacts through Facebook and effective publicity through local newsletters (LAW and Walden) and media (MCN and the Conroe Courier) as well as poster placement. Increased walk-in traffic is attributed to the use of the Walden entrance sign on strategic weekend days. An interesting fact provided by MD Anderson is that 101 participants were first time donors. Unfortunately, our own records show that only 72% of those who made appointments actually showed up. The offer of free tickets to the Renaissance Festival for participants played a huge role in the increased attendance and we owe a debt of gratitude to that fine organization. Thanks too to our blood drive site volunteers, our telephone reminder volunteers, our LAW cookie bakers, our poster and sign placement volunteers and the fine staff of the Walden Yacht Club. This is truly a community effort.
