February 2015 From the General Manager, Scott Sustman February ... Valentines & Mardi Gras Winter has not been too bad so far, some rain, some cold, lots of clouds, but nothing too extreme. February gives us many chances to visit the Yacht Club for Mardi Gras Seafood Buffet on the 6th, Valentines Day Dinner on the 14th, and February Birthday Bash on the 26th. Please make reservations early to make sure you get in. Citizen of the Year Janie & Barry Smith Janie and Barry Smith were recognized as Citizens of the Year at the Walden Annual Meeting. More information will come next month. Dr. Jones Health Presentation on a Dynamic Life On February 12, Dr. Jones will continue with a Health Luncheon entitled “The Magic of a Dynamic Life: How to Get Your MOJO back.” Just as the title suggests, MOJO can slip-slide away and although not essential to life, it certainly is a welcome condiment. Come, attend, absorb, and feel better about yourself, content with the knowledge that others will notice the difference your new MOJO makes. Please make reservations at 936-582-4222, so that Rick will include a tasty meal for $15 or, if you wish to hear the free talk, come at 12:45pm and a seat will be available. Summary of Walden on Lake Conroe Annual Property Owners Meeting On Saturday, January 24th, our Annual Meeting was held to inform property owners of all the activities that have been undertaken in the past year, the financial condition of the Association, and the projects to be undertaken in 2015. David Eargle, President of the Board, appointed Barry Russak as Parliamentarian, who confirmed that a quorum was represented. Scott Sustman, General Manager, acknowledged the contribution of Hank Miller for decades of service to the Community and his recent retirement from the Architectural Control Committee, as well as the contribution of the other members, the Finance Committee members, WEMAT leadership and volunteers, and the Walden Social Network Board members. Carl Seidule, Treasurer, presented the 2014 financial results. David Eargle reviewed the 2015 projects, that include a redesign of the Front Entrance and the Breakwater Grill. Suan Rash was introduced as Walden's next General Manager, when Scott Sustman retires on June 30. Walden Follies March 5, 6 & 7 The Walden Follies will be presented at the Yacht Club on March 5, 6, and 7. These evening performances are open to the public and there is traditionally high demand for the Friday and Saturday night shows, so make your reservations as soon as you can. Friday, March 6th, there is a special performance just for the Ladies Association of Walden members and guests. Trash Cans Out of Sight Please remember to only have your trash cans visible from the street on trash collection days. On other days, please put them in your garage or behind a fence or shrubs to block them from the street. Summary of January Board Meeting The January Board meeting was held on Saturday, January 24th. New officers were elected, including Barry Smith as President, David Eargle as Vice President, Carl Seidule as Treasurer and Sam Lincoln as Secretary. Carl Seidule reported that financial results for December and year-to-date were better than budget and slightly worse than 2013. Board meetings were set for the year, and will continue to be the third Thursday of each month. While this time of the year normally sees home sales slowing down that doesn’t seem to be the case this year! There were 20 single-family home sales closed for the month of December and there are 15 pending to close in January! The 20 sold in December puts us at 293 sold for the year and well ahead of last year’s 247! The 293 sold also is just behind the total of 302 sold in 2006…Walden’s most active sales year ever! Walden’s inventory of homes still stands at less than 3 months (as of 1/6/15)…if you have been waiting, now is the time to sell!! We are in the midst of a very active local market and the only thing holding us back is a lack of inventory! There are currently only 29 move-in ready, non-waterfront homes available in Walden. Interest rates have remained low and more and more people are moving to the area! The word is out….Walden is a great place to live! Ron and I will have traveled around Alabama, South Carolina, Florida and Louisiana playing golf over the holidays. I hope I’m able to hit on most cylinders. For those of you that have been reading my articles for the past 8 years (yes it’s been that long) know that Valentine’s Day is rose trimming day. Don’t be afraid that you are cutting back too much. Rose bushes flourish no matter what and after our winter in 2013 look how beautiful they were in all of 2014. I had a hard time trimming back some of the rose bushes of my clients just because they seem to have an endless supply of blooms. Azaleas will lose some leaves in February to make room for March blooms. Don’t panic if you see 10-20 percent of the leaves on the ground. If you are following my fertilization schedule, this is the time to apply pre-emergent herbicide (Barricade). This will prevent weeds from germinating in February and April. If you’re wanting an early green-up on your lawn, you can apply Nitro-Phos Imperial 15-5-10 fertilizer which is fast acting. Both of these products can be purchased at Jim’s Hardware in Montgomery. You know I am always talking about a butterfly garden and how fascinating it is to watch the transformation of the caterpillar into the Monarch butterfly. Well it seems that the host plant of the Monarch butterfly “Milk Weed or Tropical Butterfly Weed” seems to carry the Oe parasite. It has the familiar red-yellow-orange flowers and it actually is not a Texas native plant. It just reseeds so quickly here that it is starting to naturalize. The butterfly weed usually does not winter-over naturally, but it may prove root-hardy in our normal winters…and that’s the problem. Protecting it so it will winter-over, even the roots, contributes to the proliferation of Oe. You now ask yourself – Is there anything we can use to treat butterfly weed to kill the Oe parasite? Unfortunately, no - short of drastically cutting back your plants between each generation of monarchs that feed on it. Texas native milkweed, is one of the most attractive with its orange/yellow flowers (no red). While it dies back in the winter it does not harbor the Oe spores and return from their large, tuberous roots. The best alternative may be to treat tropical butterfly weed like an annual, like marigolds and pansies, all those plants we don’t think twice about living only one year. In other words, dig up and destroy your tropical milkweeds in late September (before the migrating monarchs come through our area), and start over next spring with new plants. Tropical butterfly weed and native milkweed are both important plants to have in our spring and summer gardens, especially butterfly gardens. They provide both incredibly valuable host and nectar sources for monarchs. We just need to be willing to work with Mother Nature, not against her. Tip of the Month: Enjoy your slow gardening month knowing that the next two months we will become busier working in our beds and being thankful that spring has arrived. Investment Property Walden Emergency Management Action Team - “WEMAT” WEMAT was formed in 2006 as part of a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program by several Walden residents with Dan Davis as the leader. Many of the first volunteers completed the extensive CERT training and Jane Perry organized the Section Leader/Block Captain area of WEMAT. Walden residents stepped forward to volunteer in all areas of WEMAT: Marine, Search and Rescue, Medical Teams and Section Leader/Block Captains. On May 4, 2007, the Texas State Senate recognized and commended Dan Davis and the Walden Emergency Management Team for their volunteer work and training on behalf of 936. 448.2733 [email protected] . www.tricorgroupusa.com . www.tricorhomes.com their community with Senate Resolution No.969. The framed, signed RESOLUTION is on view at the Walden Yacht Club. During the past ten years we have added new members to our teams, but the majority of the leaders and volunteers are the ones who were with the program from the beginning. We are not getting any younger! New volunteers are needed in all areas. Many of our Section Leaders have given notice that they are retiring this year and Block Captains are dwindling due to age, moving, etc. Several things to remember about WEMAT: very basic training takes ONE HOUR a year; we activate only during a named storm and ONLY when Walden Road is not accessible to city/county emergency crews; no one is asked to risk their lives and if we are instructed to evacuate we do! WEMAT’s job is to alert neighbors to approaching hurricanes, distribute instructions, collect emergency info from our neighbors, check on our neighbors following the storm and send the appropriate help to them when necessary. Barry Smith is our current WEMAT leader and he will be holding a General Meeting to explain WEMAT to our community, targeting new residents. Each team will give a brief description of their duties and new volunteers recruited. The date set is Saturday, March 14th, 9 – 10am at the Walden Yacht Club.
