Meeting: 20th November
From Rotaract:
This meeting is at Strada Long Room
I’m writing to say a huge thank-you to the
Rotary Club of Eltham for allowing us to
run the Eltham Festival Youth Stage at
this year’s festival. It was great to have
the opportunity to develop our member’s
skills and showcase the incredible
musical talent of our local youth. We were
really wrapped to be entrusted with this
important part of your clubs biggest
event. As a qualified Event Manager and
somebody who has worked on large scale
events for a living, I felt the event was a
huge success. The Youth Stage was able
to attract a good crowd and a wide
variety of acts. I felt it was the best
sustained crowd in all the 8 years I have
been involved in the Festival.

Back to the real stuff:
The Club AGM is cancelled for tonight and
it will now be conducted next week,
traditionally it should not absorb too much
time, followed by our International
"LEBANESE” Cuisine night with Belly
Dancers.
This will be held at Edendale Farm, Usual
start time and cost plus BYO beer and wine
NO corkage.
Please bring along your partners - friends
and make it a pleasant fellowship night. See
flyer for more info. --- See you all there.
The Week That Was
Pres Con called us all to order in the
Plastic Palace at Strada on 13/11/14.
We welcomed guest speakers Amber
Smith and Steve Bradbury. Con also
doubled as Chairperson and the
Finemaster was Paul Gardner.
The winning raffle ticket was held by Ken
Paynter but despite there being only four
cards left in the pack, he missed the
Queen of Hearts so the raffle jackpots
again next week.
Fresh from our fantastic festival
triumphs, there was much to talk about.

Presentations 13 November:
Two speakers - Amber Smith & Captain
Steve Bradbury
This evening we had two
presentations, the first by Kay’s
daughter, Amber Smith. We first heard
of the Sensitive Santa project twelve
months ago when Amber spoke about
how this project was introduced and
its target group of young children on
the Autism Spectrum who find noisy
queues and busy shopping centres far
too confronting an environment for
having photos taken with Santa. This
year’s sessions will take place at the
Mill Park library which has great
resources and volunteers to ensure
that all runs smoothly, all available
places being already fully booked.
The Sensitive Santa project is
underpinned by National, State and
Local government strategies including
the National Disability Strategy, the
Victorian State Disability Plan and
Council City Plans for Nillumbik,
Banyule and Whittlesea. Goals are to
promote inclusive and engaged
communities and to encourage the
access and connectedness of underrepresented groups to facilities,
activities and services. Sensitive Santa
is a great example of this, providing a
quality program and participation to an
often overlooked cohort of children

Captain Steve Bradbury has a long and
impressive professional history in
aviation. Since becoming a
commercial pilot in 1979 he has been
a flying instructor, a check pilot,
transported troops by Airbus to the
Middle East, and is currently a Flying
Operations Inspector for the Civil
Aviation Safety Authority.
CASA inspectors are responsible for
overseeing flying operations,
airworthiness, dangerous goods, cabin
safety, ground operations, aerodromes
as well as flight training examiners.
Village
Steve spoke of the purpose of the
International Civil Aviation
Organisation which is to develop
Standards and Recommended
Practices (SARPS), for all member
countries to adopt and which cover
such matters as flying rules, aircraft
equipment, training, aerodromes and
airspace. ICAO is now the aviation arm
of the United Nations and has 191
member countries. Other tasks of this
body is to define rules of the air,
aeronautical charts and accident and
incident investigation.
LEP
Aircraft accidents were, Steve
explained, frequently caused by
mechanical or structural failure in the
1950’s and 60’s. Following this, the
jet age improved reliability but saw an
increase in accidents during take-off
and landing due to new aircraft
designs. By the 1970’s and 80’s, the
leading cause of fatalities was
Controlled Flight into Terrain – a
human factor which demanded
additional training to deal with the new
technologies.
During the last 20 years the greatest
cause of loss of life in aviation has
been Loss of Control with a total of
1800 fatalities.
Steve used the example of the Air
France disaster in 2012 to illustrate
how a loss of situational awareness on
the part of flight crews can have
devastating consequences.
He described SA as the perception of
elements in the environment,
comprehension of the current
situation, and the ability to project the

Industry response has been to
implement change in relation to high
altitude stall training, jet upset
recovery training, specific training for
cruise captains, designation of the
cruise captain as the commander and
introduction of surprise events to
combat the ‘startle factor’. I think we
would all agree that Steve’s
presentation was outstanding and
despite his description of the many
things that can go wrong during a
flight, he represents those who help to
ensure that most of the time things go
well. I for one won’t be cancelling
overseas holiday plans!

been of interest to some.
she ran around wanting to do more. The
next year she found she was doing a lot
more.
But applying our standard attention span
test, the talk certainly passed with flying
colours. The test by the way, is based
on Background noise, of which there
was none, so well received.
At the risk of being sexist, there are
some things that are mostly better done
by a Woman, and others by a Man.
The secret to our success is that the
whole club recognised this, and Allison
created a new role in the festival.
Talking of tests, what about the
Festival?
You can read all about it elsewhere in
the Bulletin, and in advance please
understand the danger of naming names.
If you were not named, it doesn’t mean
your efforts weren’t appreciated, it just
hard to remember everyone, so well
done Club and helpers.
As captain Con mentioned, it was the
best festival ever. Sounds like the 4
yearly Olympic summary, but in this
case it was true.
Why was it so good?
Read on.
It was some 13 years ago (really?) that
the Festival was dumped in our lap.
We had previously helped with the
Festival, but the previous year the
council spent some $180,000 using a
commercial operator to run it.
As Alfred, one of our members at the
time pointed out, a fair amount for the
council to put in would have been
$30,000, but we agreed to do it for
much less.
With 7 weeks to go, PP Chris Chapple
stepped in as Director, and we put on a
great Festival.
This was also the launching of our
yellow Shirts. What we found was that
people attending the Festival saw the
Yellow shirts everywhere and came up
and talked to us. We were all friendly
and Cheerful, totally different to the
people our guests had previously
encountered.
So the die was set. We had a series of
great people directing and organising the
festival each year, and the public learnt
that the yellow shirts were friendly and
helpful.
A few years back Allison became
involved with the festival. The first year
This year we could all see it. In the
Rotary tent Judy was handling things
beautifully. Also there was Ann, both
always available to answer the clubs
questions and just run things from there.
It went smoothly and efficiently.
Of course we had Gordon there on
Aquabox and other yellow shirts coming
and going. But Judy set the tone for the
day. Well done and thanks for the
unseen efforts for the months leading up
to the Festival.
Angry was there, controlling things from
Torquay, with his 2 engineers, Dale and
Dave (we should call Dave Chip, then
we could have Chip and Dale) planning
things. Angry was impressed.
On the day we had Dale limping around
like a Character from a Western Movie,
obviously suffering from a gunshot
wound to the Knee. But he still took the
time to limp round from time to time,
keeping an eye on things.
And don’t forget Captain Con, also
limping, but seemingly omnipresent.
Helping out at the gates and with
surveys, he was the one with cool
confidence that saw us through potential
disasters, like Kevin taking a sickie with
some mild stomach bug.
Meanwhile on the oval Sally managed a
great area. New this year but well
supported, a brilliant effort. Shoes
flying through the air, and Dave's Son
second best with the tyre dragging.
Rotaract ran the Youth stage well, after
they listened to our pleas to turn down
the volume.

team, we all KNEW it was going to be a
great day We got pleasure from seeing
people enjoying themselves, which in turn
meant that our “Vibes” were always fun,
enjoyment and quiet confidence.
Some may find this a strange non scientific
explanation, but I can assure you that PMA
(Positive Mental Attitude) is real, and that
our club has it in spades, which is what
makes our festival so great. Look at any
sporting club or sales team. If the coach
does not believe the team can win, and
implants the team with this belief, then
disaster will follow, no matter what the
talents of the team.
So well done everybody, it was your
positive and cheerful attitude that put the
icing on our Festival Cake, we done well.
Whispers
When I was in the pub I heard a couple of
plonkers saying that they wouldn't feel safe
on an aircraft if they knew the pilot was a
woman. What a pair of sexists. I mean, it's
not as if she'd have to reverse the bloody
thing!
And meanwhile there were Yellow
Shirts everywhere, always approachable
and always there. Just roaming the
“streets” made people happy.
The secret to success?
Just like running a sales team or sporting

1st woman: Hi! Wanda.
2nd woman: Hi! Sylvia. How'd you die?
1st woman: I froze to death.
2nd woman: How horrible!
1st woman: It wasn't so bad. After I quit
shaking from the cold,
I began to get warm & sleepy, and
finally died a peaceful death.
What about you?
2nd woman: I died of a massive heart
attack.
I suspected that my husband was
cheating, so I came home early to catch
him in the act.
But instead, I found him all by himself
in the den watching TV.
1st woman: So, what happened?
2nd woman: I was so sure there was
another woman there somewhere
that I started running all over the house
looking.
I ran up into the attic and searched, and
down into the basement.
Then I went through every closet and
checked under all the beds.
I kept this up until I had looked
everywhere, and finally I became so
exhausted that I just keeled over with a
heart attack and died.
1st woman: Too bad you didn't look in
the freezer---we'd both still be alive...
