You guys are fantastic! September ICARE Winner October ICARE Winner Marcie Hodge, RN, Perioperative Services Tina Giem, Accountant, Fiscal Services From: Charles (patient) I had a procedure at BHH last week, and Marcie, my RN, was as good as a nurse can get. She was professional, concerned, and detailed. I have had procedures done in different places, and she was the best surgery nurse yet. In putting in my IV, she took the time to use a warm rag, tap on my hand, and lower my hand below the bed and get down on her knee; it was essentially painless. I was nervous about my procedure, and she took the time to explain everything to me; she knew all about my history and procedure. Bless you, Marcie. From: Marie Smith Tina took it upon herself to automate a process with the flu shot billing process. By her figuring out and working with EPIC on this process, she has saved time for staff in four different departments. Tina showed excellence in taking this upon herself to make sure the flu shot billing was correct and saving the time of her co-workers. Thank you, Tina. You ROCK!!! A3 Update from PFS Gabby Thoreson, a biller in PFS started an A3 process regarding timely filing of claims. Through this process, the A3 group came with an idea to have a jeopardy game for the registration staff to help educate on how registration affects the billing process. Gabby and Heather Eddie worked very hard in this project and the game happened on 11/12/2014 and was a huge success. Congratulations to team: Kelly Breen, Sondra Rand, Jodi Stradski and Dawn Westfall for winning the competition! A super big thanks to Gabby for heading this whole project up, Heather Eddie, Linda Ward and Bonnie Bacon for helping out and to all the registration staff in the hospital/clinic for playing along! Gabby Thoreson as Alex Trebek Does the HIPAA Privacy Rule prevent reporting to consumer credit reporting agencies or otherwise create any conflict with the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA)? Answer: No. The Privacy Rule’s definition of “payment” includes disclosures to consumer reporting agencies. These disclosures, however, are limited to the following protected health information about the individual: name and address; date of birth; social security number; payment history; and account number. In addition, disclosure of the name and address of the health care provider or health plan making the report is allowed. The covered entity may perform this payment activity directly, or may carry out this function through a third party, such as a collection agency, under a business associate arrangement. The Privacy Rule permits uses and disclosures by the covered entity or its business associate as may be required by the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) or other law. Therefore, the Department does not believe there is a conflict between the Privacy Rule and legal duties imposed on data furnishers by FCRA. After reality had set in, and I had come to the conclusion that my partnership goal for this year was not going to be met; I got to thinking about the subject. PASSWORDS, everyone loves passwords…..right? I mean after all, they keep our data safe, they keep our patients data safe, plus it keeps our minds limber remembering all them all of the time, I mean….who wouldn’t love passwords…….right? Ok, ok, so nobody likes passwords, however we in the computer world have not come up with anything more practical or secure to prevent unauthorized access to computers or networks. An example of this is a place I used to work; we used smart cards to access computers. That was great, except when you inserted the smart card in the computer it promptly asked you for a password. Yup, another defeat in the battle to get rid of passwords. Since we can all agree that passwords aren’t going to go away anytime soon. I thought I would share some of the things that I do to make passwords more manageable. First, I think of something that interests me or that I think I won’t forget. Something like Helena, I was born in Helena. Then I can add a number like 5. Helena’s license plate starts with a 5, so my password could be Helena5, now you are getting to an ok password that is easier to remember. Now, change the letters in the password to symbols and numbers, like this, H3l3n@5. At this time you can add a symbol to the end of your new password that sort of makes sense, like a question mark H3l3n@5?. Now you have a strong password that would not show up in a dictionary, and that makes it very hard for even a computer to crack it. Then if you need to write your passwords down don’t write the actual password, give yourself hints. For me, this password hint might be something like, home town. Then when it comes time to change your password you might make the number a 6 or move the number to the front of the password. While this is just one method you can use to make up strong passwords and keep track of them. There are many other strategies that you can use and maybe I will cover some of those in future blurbs. Thank you for helping me keep our patients information safe. UVC Light is Up and Running by Stephanie Vinson Affectionately deemed “Fabio”, the Clorox Optimum-UV unit recently purchased by Clinical Support Services is used to clean rooms that have housed patients with bacterial or viral illnesses. The purchase of the Clorox Optimum-UV unit is utilized as an addition to traditional cleaning and chemical disinfection techniques. The sanitizing system is portable and uses ultraviolet light to kill microorganisms like bacteria and viruses by inactivating their DNA. Once a room is cleaned, the unit is placed in that room to release short-wavelength UV radiation that kills even some of the most dangerous pathogens like MRSA and C. difficile. In order to effectively sanitize a room and avoid shadowing, the unit is moved to four different areas per room. The UV device is used as a supplement, not a replacement, to standard cleaning and disinfection protocols. It does not generate any harmful byproducts, nor does it leave behind any residual substances. A faint “clean air” smell may be detected in the room after the disinfection cycle. Smart technology in the unit requires the room number to be entered in order to collect data about how many times the unit has cleaned each room. Safety measures include motion detectors to shut the unit down when movement is detected in the room. In addition, the special UV waves do not travel through walls or glass, which protects patients and staff in adjacent rooms and hallways. UVC Light is Up and Running (continued) The entire Housekeeping Staff, including Surgery Housekeeping, and Laundry staff were recently trained on the unit. Three members of the Housekeeping staff, Kathy Simpson, Alice Bingham, and Julie Park gave me a personal demonstration of the system and it is impressive. Barrett Hospital & HealthCare remains committed to the goal of zero infections and the Housekeeping and Laundry Staff members, led by Clinical Support Services Manager Leslee Amos, are doing their part to aid infection prevention at BHH. Way to go, Leslee and Crew! Gratitude Challenge Did you participate in the Ice Bucket Challenge last summer? I did. Actually, I had no choice since my grandkids ”nominated” me just before they poured ice water over their own little heads! Now how could I refuse after that? The Ice Bucket Challenge was fun. And it also raised a lot of money for a worthy cause. For example, yesterday, I was grateful for 1) my family — for a million different reasons, 2) a delicious dinner prepared by a friend, and 3) my easygoing puppy. Today I’m grateful that it’s a sunny fall day, 2) I was physically able to take a long walk and 3) I’m feeling close to my brother because of feelings we shared this morning. Lately, I’ve heard about a new challenge. It’s the Gratitude Challenge. You won’t get an icy chill from it or find people recording it for social media. Still, it’s a great undertaking. My guess is that this challenge isn’t so much about how long you can go on naming three different things each day. It’s really about making a habit of being appreciative, seeing the good and finding pleasure in the small stuff that makes up the everyday. Here’s what it is: Each day, name three things you’re grateful for. They have to be different each day — no repeats allowed. You can name them all at once at the end or beginning of the day. Or you can keep a running tally throughout the day. Give it a try. No buckets, no ice needed — just some awareness of the big and little things that make you smile. 1-866-370-4839 Or contact Human Resources: FREE, confidential support www.mylifevalues.com Tammy Brickzin x3009 anytime, day or night.
