Written by Kaycee Lagarde FILED UNDER News Local News Habitat for Humanity may be best known for building houses, but this week its volunteers are showing that the organization offers much more. A week of community development projects in the Westside Garden District neighborhood in Pensacola kicked off Monday as part of Habitat for Humanity’s 2013 AmeriCorps Build-a-Thon, which was held in three other cities this spring and will wrap up in Washington, D.C., on Saturday. Most Viewed Overgrown and littered areas will be cleared, sidewalks will be repaired, addresses will be painted on houses and a historic cemetery will be revitalized, thanks to the toil of 100 volunteers. This year’s Build-a-Thon marks the third consecutive year that Pensacola Habitat for Humanity has been selected to host the event, but this year is different than most. About 80 AmeriCorps volunteers from across the country along with about 20 Pensacola Habitat for Humanity volunteers and staff members will be working this week in the area from Gregory to Cervantes Streets in between Pace Boulevard and A Street. Rather than building homes from the ground up like in previous Build-a-Thons, volunteers will work on projects including yard maintenance, land clearing, sidewalk repairs and address painting. Natalie Shearlock, director of community engagement for Pensacola Habitat for Humanity. “Then we were awarded this build event, so we thought it was a great opportunity to have lots of hands on the projects that needed to be done.” Clive Rainey, the first volunteer with Habitat for Humanity when it was founded in 1976, said that he is excited to be working in Pensacola this week to revitalize the neighborhood. Volunteers will be working this week on restoring the cemetery gatehouse, restoring monuments and recording all of the graves with photographs.
