Papers of Helen J. Stewart, 1869-1948
Correspondence and papers, 1869-1948, concerning the death of
Helen Stewart's husband, Archibald; raising a family; running a
farm and cattle ranch; and the development of the Las Vegas area.
Known as the "First Lady of Las Vegas", Mrs. Stewart was active
in the establishment of the town and its early government. Other
family papers are included in the collection.

Business and personal correspondence, 1950 - 1952, pertaining to
Binion's gaming activities in Las Vegas, especially his operation
and ownership of the Horseshoe Club. Included are some letters to
Maury M. Berstein and other officers and employees of the
Horseshoe Club; materials relating to Binion's ranching interests;
and miscellaneous corporate and personal business records.

Papers of Frank A. Buol, 1898 - 1957
Correspondence and business records, 1898 - 1957, related to
Buol's farming, land speculation, and general store in Pahrump
Valley, Nevada. Also included are papers related to his mining
interests in the vicinity. There is some material on the early
development of Las Vegas, most of this in the form of letters from
Frank's brother, Peter Buol, who served as first mayor of the city.
In addition, there are miscellaneous records concerning Chateau
Buol, Frank's Pahrump Valley winery, family photographs, and
letters to Robert B. Lee and Carl Myers, Buol's employees at the
Johnnie Mine.

Southwestern Mining Company, 1881 - 1896
Collection, 1881 - 1896, is comprised primarily of the letters
between W.S. Mills, who managed the company's mines in
Eldorado Canyon, Nevada, and his assistant, George B.
Waterhouse. The letters detail mining activity in the Eldorado
Mining District on the Colorado River.

Papers of Frank Williams, 1897 - 1918
The papers of Frank Williams date from 1905 to1918. Included are
scrapbooks containing bills compiled and annotated by Williams
while he represented Lincoln County in the Nevada Assembly
(1905-1907); a letter (April 16, 1907) from Governor John Sparks
informing Williams of his appointment to the Nevada State Board
of Agriculture; a Clark County property tax receipt (1918); and an
admittance card for a meeting at a miners' union hall on February
8, 1897.

Records of the Clark County Recorders Office, 1874 - 1975
The records of the Clark County Recorders Office date from 1874
to 1909. Included in the collection are property tax assessment
rolls (1909-1911) and records of the county recorders office. The
latter includes deeds, mortgages, marriage records, receiving
books, federal tax lien notices, army and navy discharges, justice
court records, a municipal court register of actions for the City of
Searchlight, a register of town lots in Las Vegas, business license,
receipts, redemption certificates, water appropriation records,
mining notices, and records of the Searchlight, El Dorado and
Yellow Pine (Goodsprings) mining districts (some dating back to
1874).
Access to this collection is restricted and requires 24 hour notice.

Vegas, Nevada, 1964
"Appraisal Report of the Twin Lakes Resort for the City of Las
Vegas, Nevada," 1964 by the Anderson-Stanton Company of
Phoenix, Arizona. Included in the collection are photographs of the
appraised property and floor plans of buildings at the resort which
became Lorenzi Park.

Johnnie Mining and Milling Company, 1905 - 1911
The Records of the Johnnie Mining and Milling company date
from 1905 to 1911.Records include: correspondence (1905-1909),
monthly reports (1910-1911); an annual report issued in April of
1905; a report of costs and recovery per ton of ore milled
(1908-1910); a lease agreement form; and other miscellaneous
records of the firm (and its predecessor Johnnie Consolidated Gold
Mining Company, 1905-1906).
The Johnnie Mine was located at Johnnie in southern Nye County,
Nevada. Some of the individuals represented in the collection are
Carl Anderson, G.F. Moser, A.D. Myers, Carl F. Schader and Jerry
Rourke.

Papers of H.H. Johnson, 1908 - 1918
This collection is comprised of the business records of Johnsons's
newspaper, the Eldorado Canyon Miner, which was published at
Eldorado Canyon (Nelson postoffice), Clark County, Nevada, in
1917, together with records of the Eldorado Enterprise Gold
Mining Company and the Lucky Maid Silver, Lead and Zinc
Mining Company, both of which Johnson served as secretary.
The mining company records consist of location notices, proofs of
labor claims, deeds, correspondence, articles of incorporation,
stock certificates, records of stock sales and transfers, oaths of
company officers, prospectuses and miscellaneous financial
documents. Among officers and stockholders of the mining
companies whose activities are noted are Ed W. Clark, Thomas
Clark (president of the Lucky Maid), T.L. Murphy, Roy W.
Martin, George A. Fayle, Fred A. Hale, Jr., E.P. Jeanes (president
of Eldorado Enterprise), Clark M. Alvord, W.W. Coop, R.T.
Leonards and C.E.L. Gresh. Also included is letterhead stationery
of the Eldorado Canyon Publicity Association, listing officers.

Las Vegas Volunteer Fire Department, 1930 - 1982
Papers and records, 1930-1982. Fire records, payroll, rosters, bank
records, constitutions and by-laws, minutes, correspondence. The
volunteers were replaced by paid firemen in 1942, but continued as
an organization until 1982.

Oran Gragson was a former mayor of Las Vegas and the collection

A collection of radio scripts by Ned Day, Las Vegas journalist and
newscaster. The program was produced for station KROL during

Fremont Hotel registers, 1937 - 1945
8 register books from the Fremont Hotel, Las Vegas dating from
1937 to 1945. They came originally from Leona C. Buchet, owner
of the hotel. Registers include guest name, city of origin, and paid
status.

Prepared in 1988 as part of a city park and development plan, this
is the Historic American Building Survey (HABS) of Kiel Ranch,
North Las Vegas. Included are 61 photographs of ranch site and
buildings. 59 page report contains history of Kiel Ranch, structure
descriptions, chain of title, bibliography, maps, floor plans, and
building details.

Lorenzi Park Collection, 1928 - 1967
Dating from 1928 to 1967, this collection consists of newspaper
clippings on Lorenzi and the Lorenzi resort; hand-written notes on
Lorenzi history by Louise Lorenzi Fountain; biographical
information on Lorenzi family and in-laws; family and business
printed material; city plaque honoring D.G. Lorenzi; and post cards
(in photo collection: #2487 - 2501; photographs #2502 - 2532).

Papers of Ken Van Vorst, 1940s - 1980s
Manuscript collection of Ken Van Vorst, dating from the 1940s
through the 1980s. Included is his "Legends of Yesterday," an
anecdotal, personal history of Las Vegas from the 1940s to the
1980s. Mr. Van Vorst was also a Mason and member of the Shrine,
and some of those documents are available in the collection.

Robert Stoldal Collection, 1940s - 1970s
Dating from the 1940s through the 1970s, this collection contains
unused stationery from many Las Vegas hotels such as Dunes,
New Frontier, Last Frontier, Desert Inn, and El Rancho Vegas.
Also of note are materials related to Howard Hughes.

George Thompson Collection, 1940s - 1950s
This collection includes19 photos of Police Chief George
Thompson and the Las Vegas Police Dep't, 1940s and 1950s. Also
in the collection are newspaper clippings of Thompson and the
police department, police identifications cards, and a small amount
of certificates and correspondence. In addition, there is an 8 page
"BMI project story" by Henderson Chamber of Commerce, 1947.

Charles McCarthy Collection, 1915 - 1918
Dating from 1915 to 1918, this collection is comprised of papers,
correspondence, and mining records of Charles McCarthy, a
former Clark County Assessor. Included in the collection are stock
certificates, bills from local Las Vegas businesses, miscellaneous
mining records, the election certificates of Mrs. McCarthy, who
also served as Assessor, townsite map, and information from
Platina, NV., mining group. Also included are diagrams of some
mines in the Yellow Pine District, a plan of Eastern Star mine in
Crescent, and a small amount of family background.

Four scrapbooks from Cy Crandall, head of the Civil Defense
agency in Las Vegas, 1940s - 1950s. Newspaper clippings from
the war years are indexed. Civil Defense clippings are filed into

Papers of Charles Sloan, 1900 - 1948
Collection consists of papers, mining correspondence, mining
maps, miscellaneous items of Charles Sloan, Deputy Mineral
Surveyor for the state of Nevada, appointed in 1908. Records from
AZ, CA, ID, TX, and Mexico are also included. Nevada material
includes correspondence from Searchlight, envelope from Bunker
Hill Consolidated mines, and articles of Incorporation from the
Red Paint Gold Mining Co. A brief history and conditions of the
Bodie District and a description and list of uses for magnesite are
included. Appointment papers, misc. bills and government notices.
One photo, which is of Sloan and two others. Correspondence

Dating from 1931 to 1981, the Clark County School District
Collection contains guides, reports, and historical research. Of
special interest are the teacher applications to the El Dorado
School District from 1930 to 1941. Also of note is the photo year
book of the North 9th Street School (J.D. Smith).

Papers of James Hinds, 1970 - 1985
2 volume manuscript entitled "Under Seven Generals: A Private
Memoir of my Service as USAF Tactical Fighter Weapons
Historian," by James Hinds. It discusses his job as base historian
from 1970 - 1985, various airplane types, missile systems, testing,
commanders, and notes of Air Force History.
Until May of 2002, pages 1-70 could be used only with the
permission of Mr. Hinds and verified by Museum Staff. Entire
manuscript is now open for educational purposes.

Collection dates between 1902 and 1941 and consists of various
printed materials. Included are copies of Ely Daily Times, Clark
County Review, and McCall's magazine.

Landmark Hotel, 1988 - 1990
The Landmark Hotel went out of business in June, 1991 and the
papers in this collection are discards from the hotel. Included are
room items, books, brochures, menus, stationery, food and
beverage reports, health reports, miscellaneous schedules,
correspondence, memos, and hotel paperwork.

Jay Florian Mitchell Collection, 1954 - 1975
Dating from 1945 to 1975, this collection consists of items from
various Las Vegas Hotels including stationery, publications,
menus, show ads, envelopes, programs, etc. Hotels include Aqua,
Desert Inn, El Rey (Searchlight), El Cortez, Flamingo, Last
Frontier, New Frontier, Mr. Sy's, Nevada Club, Royal Nevada,
Stardust, Sands, Thunderbird, and the Tropicana.
Also in the collection are various publications from Las Vegas
during the 1950s and 1960s.

various printed materials related to Howard Hughes and his
business dealings in Las Vegas. Included is information on Summa
Corporation and its officers; Landmark Hotel, John Meier (Hughes'
aide); KLAS news reports on Hughes; atomic testing; Hughes'
correspondence with the city of Las Vegas about the potential
airport; portion of Hughes' 1976 estate appraisal; agreement with
Rosemont Enterprises, material on Hughes' will; Robert Maheu
civil suit; and an interview with Hank Greenspun (Las Vegas Sun)
about Hughes from 1983.

Daughters of the Utah Pioneers time capsule, 1903 - 1939
The DUP [Daughters of the Utah Pioneers] built a monument at
the Old Fort in 1939. In it they put letters, brochures, and
photographs from various Las Vegas families and organizations. It
was moved from the Elks property to Fantasy (Lions) park in 1974.
Construction on the new State office building at the park site in
1993 unearthed the time capsule. DUP reburied copies in a new
capsule at the Mormon Fort in 1994. Original documents are here,
mostly family histories.

This is a collection of transcripts from interviews of 25 people

Clark County Naturalization Records of the Eighth Judicial
District Court. These records include 15 bound volumes and one
box of index cards covering the years 1898 to 1956. The volumes
contain Declarations of Intention, Petitions for Naturalization, lists
of naturalized citizens, and naturalized depositions. There are a
few items of correspondence between the Clark County Clerk and
the Immigration of Naturalization Service.

The collection contains 26 Hallmark "Dollhouse" Cards and 1
1949 American Greeting Publishers greeting card dated from 1947
- 1949. The Hallmark cards comprise 3 different sets: 1. "Land of
Make Believe" - 21 items, 2. "Dolls of the Nations" - 2 items, and
3. "Little Women" - 4 items. The "Little Women" set is based on
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's movie produced and directed by Mervyn
LeRoy. This set features the names and signatures of the four
actresses who starred in the movie; Margaret O'Brien, June
Allyson, Elizabeth Taylor, and Janet Leigh.
Note: greeting card descriptions correspond to the card number in
the series.

including Prosper Goumond, Lilian Witcher, Earl W. Hulse, Philip
Buck (Buck's addition), and Judge M.S. Beale. Documents also
include deeds from Salt Lake city featuring historical information
about Brigham Young.
Of particular note are the scrapbooks. Two are hand-written
dictionaries, Paiute/Mojave/English and Paiute/English. Another is
by Judge M.S. Beale and documents his arrival in Las Vegas in
1904 and his later experiences.

Comprehensive scrapbooks detailing the social activities of the
Beta Sigma Phi sorority. Some of their activities included bond
drives during WWII, USO Club events, and work with
philanthropic organizations. Fashion trends are well-documented,
including changes in dress and hair.

C.G. Andress School Book Collection, 1916 - 1955
The collection of books is from the Eldorado School in Nelson,
Nevada. Included are textbooks, workbooks, and teacher guides
in reading, English, arithmetic, art and music. There are many
illustrated story books, including Dick and Jane and classics.
Also in the collection are the personal papers of Charles Harold
Jameson, who in the early 1940's was active with the state of
Nevada engineers in Carson City with regards to the Las Vegas
artesian water basin. Included is a list made in 1912 of all the
Artesian Wells in the Las Vegas Valley.

detailed description of the buildings. The booklet has many

A collection of publications and newsletters by the Nevada
Department of Transportation. Produced for the employees of the
Department, the newsletters cover news of promotions,
retirements, and events. Folders 40 to 42 contain copies of
newspaper clippings from Nevada newspapers about
transportation projects around the state.

Ed Fike & Colorado River Properties, Inc., 1967 - 1970
In 1970, while running for the office of governor, lieutenant
governor Ed Fike became embroiled in a scandal involving conflict
of interest. While he was lieutenant governor, Mr. Fike was also
the vice president of Colorado River Properties, Inc., a company
which purchased land at very low rates from the Colorado River
Commission, a state agency. The conflict of interest was reported
by the Las Vegas Sun and brought to the attention of national
journalist Jack Anderson. Mr. Fike, widely considered the front
runner in the race for governor, lost to Mike O'Callaghan, perhaps
as a direct result of the scandal.
This collection contains photocopies of notes from George Rudiak,
the attorney responsible for doing the research regarding the
conflict of interest, his correspondence regarding the scandal, and
numerous newspaper clippings from the Las Vegas Sun and Las

information, and ticket sales.

This collection contains information on the Great Nevada Seal
with reference material from several sources. Also included are
stock Certificates from Goldfield, Nevada in 1910, and a 1881
Nevada State Controllers Warrant for service as a seven day
member of the Assembly. There is a copy of the program from the
Thirty-Third Graduating Class of the Las Vegas High School in
1947.

This collection, collected by staff, contains copies of journals and
diaries of Mormon pioneers to the Los [Las] Vegas Mission from
1855 until it was abandoned in 1857.
There are also copies of O.D. Gass Day Journal's from July 1876
to October 1880 detailing weather, and crops at the Rancho. Also
included is a copy of O.D. Gass's Store Journal with account
records from June 1879 to June 1881.

This is a small collection of original manuscripts written by Helen
J. Stewart. Included in the collection are historical essays, short
stories such as "Magnetic Valley, or the Padres Jewells," Native
American fables, and a partial adventure novel set in the American
West. Also in the collection are a small sampling of letters written
by Stewart as well as autobiographical essays.
