Message from
the President
Summer truly is a state of mind at Bemidji State University.
Academically, you will find a great selection of courses – both online
and on campus – taught by a stellar cadre of Bemidji State faculty.
The summer schedule is flexible, with some classes lasting only a
few weeks and others running an entire 9-week session. These
options make it easy to fit BSU classes into your summer plans.
From a recreational standpoint, you couldn’t choose a better place
than BSU to study during the summer. Adjacent to campus, Diamond
Point Park provides the perfect retreat from the hustle and bustle
of classes. At the park, our Outdoor Program Center rents bikes,
camping equipment, canoes, kayaks, and other recreational gear for
summertime fun. The Bemidji area is also steeped in summer activities, with art fairs, summer theatre, waterfront celebrations, and more.

Summer at
Bemidji State
With online and on-campus summer choices at BSU,
you can easily set your mind on a season of learning
and enrichment. Whether you want to focus on a
single course, reduce your upcoming course load,
get yourself back on track, learn something new, or
expand your career opportunities, BSU Summer is a
great way to do it.
Hundreds of Choices,
Flexible Schedule, Focused Approach
With more than 300 courses and workshops available
on campus and online, you are certain to find classes
or workshops that are just right for you. Course lengths
vary from three to nine weeks, giving you the flexibility
needed to fulfill all of your summer plans.
Summer classes are the same quality as those offered during the school year. The focused-summer
approach, with its small class sizes, engaging faculty,
and supportive learning environment, enables students to successfully complete a course in as little
as three weeks.
If you’re looking to transfer your credits, Minnesota’s
transfer curriculum makes it possible to easily transfer your BSU Summer credits to other state system
schools.
Online Option Brings BSU Summer to You
Not in Bemidji this summer? You can still step into
the action. With BSU’s online offerings, you can be
anywhere and take BSU summer courses. There are
over 175 courses to choose from - everything from
anthropology to financial management, and you’ll
get the same personal support and attention offered
throughout the academic year.
Up North Living and Learning
Our “Up North” campus environment adds to the
summer experience. When it’s time for a study break,
you’ll find that being in Bemidji – one of Minnesota’s
premiere summer recreation areas – means having
a whole lot of fun in the great outdoors.
Bemidji State University’s 89-acre, wooded campus
sits on the shore of beautiful Lake Bemidji. You can
relax and study on one of the sandy beaches adjacent
to campus or take full advantage of the lake. Go swimming, skiing, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, sailing, or
whatever lake activity increases your enjoyment of
warm summer weather. You’ll love the resort-like feel
of the area, while studying with us in the summer.
Our Outdoor Program Center’s lakeside boathouse
in Diamond Point Park offers great outdoor programs
and rents kayaks, canoes, sailboats, and bicycles.
The park itself has lakeside benches and walkways,
grills, and gazebos – a perfect combination for a quick
study-break getaway. A newly built biking and walking
trail winds it way along the lake and through campus,
offering students a great outdoor experience that’s
handy and inexpensive.
Besides lake activities, you can shop the dozens of
craft and art fair vendors who visit Bemidji every
summer. Also plan to take time out for city summer
festivals, including the Bemidji Jaycees Water Carnival, Art in the Park, the Big Bog Festival, and the
Bemidji Dragon Boat Festival. If you need a weekend
getaway that’s not too far away, take a short drive
south to Itasca State Park to hike, bike, camp, and
experience the park tradition of wading barefoot at
the source of the Mighty Mississippi River.

Sink or Swim: How to Modify High School
Reacting to the Past
August 7-9
“Reacting to the Past” courses employ
a different pedagogy. Students learn by taking on
roles, informed by classic texts, in elaborate games
set in the past; they learn skills—speaking, writing,
critical thinking, problem solving, leadership, and
teamwork—in order to prevail in difficult and complicated situations. That is because Reacting roles,
unlike those in a play, do not have a fixed script and
outcome. While students will be obliged to adhere
to the philosophical and intellectual beliefs of the
historical figures they have been assigned to play,
they must devise their own means of expressing those
ideas persuasively, in papers, speeches or other public
presentations; and students must also pursue a course
of action they think will help them win the game.
The conference attendees will receive the game in advance. During the conference, participants will receive
an introduction to the Reacting to the Past pedagogy,
introduction to specific games, faction meetings, and
game sessions. A student participant panel about the
benefits of Reacting, and game development seminar
will be scheduled. Game debriefing, discussion of
using Reacting in the classroom, and additional
discussion of game development are included in this
workshop.
Description:
Intended Audience: Faculty from all Minnesota
State Colleges and Universities (MnSCU), University
of Minnesota, and Minnesota Private College Council
as well as other colleges and universities in the Upper
Midwest. Higher Education Faculty from outside the
area are welcome as well. High School teachers are
welcome, however the implementation of the games
is geared more towards a college level environment.
Instructor’s Credentials: Dr. Marsha Driscoll is the
Chair of the Psychology Department and Director of
the Honors Program at Bemidji State University. She
was involved with the development with the Darwin
game. Dr. Brendan McManus is an Associate Professor
in the History Department at Bemidji State University.
He currently is teaching Foundations of Western Legal

For financial aid purposes, summer is considered
the last term of the 2013-14 funding year. To receive
summer aid, a student will need to be admitted as a
regular student seeking a degree or teaching licensure
through Bemidji State University AND register for all
Summer 2014 classes by June 2, 2014.
Forms: To apply for Summer 2014 financial aid, you
will need to complete all 2013-14 financial aid forms.
This includes the 2013-14 Free Application for Federal
Student Aid (FAFSA, which cannot be completed after
June 30, 2014) and the 2013-14 BSU Financial Aid Application form. In addition, you will need to complete
a Summer 2014 Financial Aid Supplement form. If you
received aid at BSU for the 2013-14 academic year, you
will need to complete only the summer supplement
form. All forms are available from the BSU Financial
Aid Office, or from our website.
Grant and Loan Criteria: Although individual
course start and end dates may differ, summer is
considered one enrollment period when determining
Federal and State aid. All credits taken between May 14,
2014, and August 1, 2014, are considered summer term
credits. Summer grants are based upon the exact number of enrolled credits. Loan awards are determined by
budget, need, other educational resources, plus annual
loan limits and are not pro-rated by enrolled credits
as are grants. To receive a loan, you must enroll for
a minimum of six (6) BSU undergraduate credits or
five (5) graduate credits.

Enrollment Changes: Caution: Changing enrollment after receiving aid will result in a recalculation of
your aid eligibility. If the change makes you ineligible
for the aid received, you will become immediately liable for repayment of the aid. If a class is canceled or
your enrollment changes after aid is established and/
or disbursed, you will need to contact the Financial Aid
Office immediately to determine your correct award
and to return any overaward that may have occurred.
Failure to attend a summer enrollment period, after
receiving aid for it, will result in an overaward requiring your immediate return of Federal and State aid.
It is important that the exact summer enrollment be

communicated to the Financial Aid Office at all times
and that the aid disbursed to you reflects that enrollment. You should accept aid only if your enrollment
for the entire summer (May 14 – August 1) is final
and not subject to change.
Grant and Loan Programs: Summer financial
aid consists primarily of Federal Direct Subsidized
and Unsubsidized Loans, Federal Pell and Minnesota
State Grants, and alternative loans. Students should
be aware that aid from some programs may not be
available if the maximum eligibility limits were
reached during the current academic year. Summer
jobs on campus fall under the Regular Student Payroll,
which is open to most enrolled students. Summer job
vacancies are posted on the BSU website prior to the
start of the summer term.
New Transfer Students for Summer: You will
need to have your FAFSA data sent to BSU (Code
002336) as soon as possible by using the “Add or
Delete a School Code” link on the FAFSA on the Web
application at www.fafsa.gov. Your admission to BSU
as a regular degree seeking student is necessary before
your financial aid application can be processed. It is
important, therefore, that you request to have academic transcripts sent to the BSU Admissions Office
from all of your prior non-MnSCU institutions early
in the process. Without academic transcripts, you may
be admitted only as a special student, which does not
allow your financial aid application to be processed.
Finally, you need to be aware that in addition to loan
acceptance, a mandatory entrance loan counseling session and Master Promissory Note (MPN) are
required prior to the disbursement of your Federal
Direct Loan.
Financial Aid Related Deadlines: New applicants
should complete all forms prior to April 1, 2014, to
allow sufficient time for the processing and awarding
of aid. Late applicants will be processed, but students
should have sufficient funds of their own to pay their
initial summer costs. Federal Pell grant recipients
who withdraw from one or more courses within the
first 30 days of the summer term, will have their
awards reduced to the adjusted level of enrollment. A
completed FAFSA must be received by the Federal Aid
Processing Center within the first 30 days of the term
to be eligible for a Minnesota State Grant. Summer
applicants are encouraged to contact the Financial
Aid Office for assistance.

No matter what course of study students pursue, the
resources and services of the A.C. Clark Library play
an important role in their education. The library’s
collections include well over one-quarter of a million
books, subscriptions to more than 100,000 electronic
and hardcopy periodicals, more than 130,000 government publications, and a variety of digital and audio
visual materials, maps, and microforms. A part of
MnPALS, Bemidji State’s library catalog provides
comprehensive bibliographic access to library holdings throughout Minnesota. The library’s web page
also provides access to a wide variety of electronic
indexes, to abstract and full text resources, and to
many electronic reference tools. The library provides
access to off-campus resources through an extensive
interlibrary loan network which includes other state
universities in Minnesota and the regional Minitex
network. This wide knowledge base helps support all
of BSU’s academic programs.
The library, however, is not only a place to obtain materials; it is also where students can learn to efficiently
and effectively access, evaluate, and use information.
The forms of information and the paths of access to
it continue to change dramatically. It is therefore
especially important for those who would be problem
solvers in our society to be knowledgeable about and
skilled in using information technologies, networks,
and services.
The faculty and staff of the A.C. Clark Library strive to
fulfill this educational mission. From the Reference
Desk or other public service areas, and through guest
instruction for classes and groups, and behind-thescenes technical processing, their efforts are directed at
supporting a very important element of each student’s
education.
Library hours are posted near the library entrance and
on the library’s homepage.

A Special Student Admission Form, found online at
http://www.bemidjistate.edu/admissions/undergrad/
submit/applynow/ is available for individuals who do
not plan to complete a degree or apply for financial
aid. Once admitted as a Special Student, individuals
may register for courses.
Undergraduate Special Student status allows qualified students to attend summer term. Students will
be granted special admission status if they (1) have
graduated from an accredited high school OR (2) have
completed a GED certificate OR (3) are transferring
from another post-secondary institution at which
they currently are, or have left, in good academic
and financial standing. An application fee of $20 is
required. Transcripts are not required. Students who
later decide to pursue a degree program must apply for
regular undergraduate admission to BSU.
Admission Requirements
for an Undergraduate Degree Program
Bemidji State University admits high school students
who 1) rank in the top 50 percent of their high school
graduating class OR 2) score a composite of 21 or
above on the ACT. The ACT is required of all students
who have graduated from high school within the past
two years. For high schools that do not rank their
students, a GPA of 3.0 or above is needed for automatic
admission. Transfer students (at least 24 semester
credits) will be admitted if they have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.00. Applicants who
do not satisfy either requirement may be considered
for conditional admission.
Application Procedures
for a Degree Program
1. Application for admission: complete the BSU application for admission and return it to the Office
of Admissions and Scholarships.
2. Application fee: attach a non-refundable $20.00
money order, cash, or check (payable to Bemidji
State University) to the application for admission.
3. Official transcript: request that your high school or
secondary institution(s) send an official transcript
directly to the Office of Admissions and Scholarships.
4. Send electronic ACT score report if graduation from
high school has been within the last two years.

Graduate Special Student Admission
Students seeking graduate education for the purpose of
personal or professional enrichment and/or licensure,
without a planned master’s degree objective, may
enroll with graduate special student status. Admission
as a graduate special student requires that the student
have a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited
college or university.
Graduate special enrollment requires an application
and a $20.00 application fee. Official transcripts
(unless pursuing licensure), the Graduate Record
Examination (GRE), or letters of recommendation
are not required. Graduate special students who subsequently decide to pursue a master’s degree are required
to complete a separate application for admission; they
will not be required to pay a second $20 application
fee. The application for admission should be submitted after successful completion of ten (10) graduate
semester credits. Students interested in pursuing
licensure should contact the Registrar (218-755-2020)
regarding state requirements.
All application credentials become the property of
Bemidji State University and will not be returned
to the student.
