N-Ethyl-2-Pyrrolidone, commonly referred to as NEP, is a highly polar aprotic solvent having a
chemical structure C6H11NO. The chemical, depending on the application, is used either as a
catalyst or a surfactant or as a solvent. This highly stable weak alkaline organic solvent
exhibits complete miscibility in water and is soluble in organic solvents. Moreover, N-Ethyl-2Pyrrolidone is a colorless to yellow liquid characterized by an amine like odor and is used in
certain chemical reactions involving hydrolysis, condensation, polymerization among others.
NEP often finds application as a substitute for N-Methyl-2-Pyrrolidone (NMP) which is used
on a wider scale across diverse industries. NEP is consumed by diverse industries such as
paints & coatings, industrial cleaners, petrochemical processing, desulfurization of gases,
among others.
N-Ethyl-2-Pyrrolidone Market: Drivers & Restraints
The use of NMP in applications such as in paints & coatings and industrial cleaners which
involve prolonged exposure to the chemical has been under scrutiny by regulatory bodies
such as Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) - US and European Chemical Agency (ECHA).
It has been identified as a reproductive toxin and as such its use in these applications is
expected to witness stringent regulations and/or restrictions. NEP, which exhibited properties
similar to those of NMP was considered an apt replacement for NMP. However, NEP too has
been classified as a reproductive toxin, as such, its use in certain applications is expected to
witness the same fate as that of NMP. However, the growth of end use industries is likely to
result in growth in demand for NEP. These aforementioned factors in turn are expected to
result in a sluggish growth of global N-Ethyl-2-Pyrrolidone market over the forecast period.
