United Way President Christine Robere told the Muskegon Rotary Club during its
monthly meeting Feb. 6 that those educational, economic and health-related challenges
were among the most urgent obstacles facing residents.

The United Way has championed education, along with good income and health as the
building blocks of a quality of life and those items were advanced this past year through
many programs, Robere said.
Its THRIVE Agenda, Lights On Afterschool initiative and the new Michigan Reading
Corps program helped United Way address the educational needs of local youth.
Robere said the Reading Corps is a data-driven, evidence-based pilot program that it
launched in collaboration with Hope Network and the Heart of West Michigan United
Way in Grand Rapids.
The initiative, modeled after Minnesota Reads, funds two Americorps workers who
began their work at a Muskegon Heights elementary school last fall.
“Instead of going to the Peace Corps, they can volunteer their time locally,” Robere said.
“We’re looking forward to the results here. Early indicators have been positive.”
The group is the second Reading Corps effort to debut in Michigan, she said.
With the Lights On Afterschool effort, United Way aims to partner 150 elementary
youth with 150 senior tutors to help with evening tutoring needs. Last year, the
program reached 416 students at five sites throughout the area, Robere said.
Robere said recent reading advancement among third grade reading scores could be
attributed to several community efforts, including the federally funded Head Start child
development and preschool program and Catholic Charities West Michigan’s Healthy
Families Program.
On the health front, the organization has partnered with Rotary’s One in 21 Healthy
Muskegon County initiative to push for smoking cessation programs and to reduce
behaviors associated with obesity, she said.

Robere went on to say to help youth achieve living wages, United Way recently helped
employ 50 low-income youth through a paid summer internship program in
collaboration with the Michigan Works! Association and Goodwill Industries’
GoodTemps effort. The students also volunteered regularly, including the United Ways
annual Day of Caring effort.
When asked by a Rotarian what pressing challenges the community might not know
about, Robere named teen pregnancy, the challenges facing single parent households
and the need for living wages for residents.

In order to address these issues, Robere and United Way’s community engagement
director Kristina Coby said area residents must volunteer.
Coby, who joined United Way from Sault Ste. Marie last year, urged residents to

In addition to the volunteer center, six other agencies or collaborative partners

Muskegon County used to have a teen parent program which made an effort to assist these sometimes
very young women overcome the huge obstacles they and their children face. I think the state cut its
funding. Such a short-sighted decision.

Muskegon County. Where's the story on that?

I'm sure that no one knows what to say. The only long-term solution is to effect a cultural shift
back to the expectation that sex belongs in marriage and not anywhere else. But that conveys
an idea about marriage that flies in the face of others' efforts to redefine the institution so as to
admit same-sex couples. The result is a society-wide impasse.
