Roger Williams Guthrie, Jr, born November 10, 1921
in Dallas, lived a wonderful life filled with the love of
his family and friends. He went peacefully in his
sleep to join our Lord on November 19, 2011,
following his 90th birthday. Roger's family moved
from Dallas to Houston during the depression. He
graduated from Lamar High School in 1939, then
attended the University of Texas in Austin, following
in the footsteps of his parents. There he pledged
Sigma Chi fraternity in 1940. When World War II
began, he transferred to the University of Houston,
completed his BBA, and became a 2nd Lt. in the
Army Medical Corps. Roger was honorably discharged in 1946, returned to
Austin and enrolled in Mechanical Engineering School at U.T., where he
graduated in Jan. 1949. Roger was a member of two Engineering Honor
Societies, Tau Beta Pi and Pi Tau Sigma. In 1949 Roger joined Shell Pipe
Line Corp in Houston as a Junior Engineer, beginning a career that lasted 33
years, during which time he and his family lived in Houston, Austin, Flagstaff,
Anaheim, New Orleans and Midland. He was a registered engineer in 5
states: TX, AZ, CA, NM & UT. Roger retired in 1982 as Division ManagerShell Pipe Line and retired with wife, Nadine Hoke Guthrie, to Horseshoe
Bay, where he lived the rest of his life. Roger was a lifetime member of
Texas Exes, Sigma Chi and Tau Beta Pi, and was a Tejas Vaqueros from
1971-1976. He was very proud of his three children and loved being Pawpaw
to his six grandchildren. Roger was preceded in death by his parents, Roger
W. Guthrie and Lyde M. Guthrie; his beautiful wife of 58 years, Nadine H.
Guthrie; and brother Wright M. Guthrie. Roger is survived by children Grant
W. Guthrie (Houston), Lyda G. Akin (Dallas), Dr. Clayton S. Guthrie
(Manhattan); son-in-law Stephan Akin (Dallas); grandchildren Kelly Guthrie
(Houston); Kirby Guthrie (Manhattan), Lauren Akin (Vermont), Kary Guthrie
(Austin), Olivia Akin (Dallas) & Travis Akin (Dallas); loving companion
Vernelle Jenkins (Horseshoe Bay); sister Frances Kneuppel (Richmond); and
many loving in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. As if in honor of
Roger - one of their biggest fans - the Texas Longhorns beat the Texas
Aggies on Thanksgiving Day in the final rivalry game. Hook 'em Horns!
Please join us in celebrating Roger's life at a memorial service held on
Saturday, Dec. 3rd at 1:00 in The Church at Horseshoe Bay, 600 Hi Ridge,
Horseshoe Bay, TX 78657. A reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall. In
lieu of flowers, Roger requested any memorials be sent in his honor to Seton
Highlands Lake Hospice, P.O. Box 1219, Burnet, TX 78611, for the excellent
care they provided, or The Church at Horseshoe Bay, where he was a
Charter member.
