Page 1 Jan/Feb 2015 Creating Opportunities for Commerce & Community January/February 2015 From the Executive Director Dear Members, On behalf of the entire team here at the Chamber, we would like to wish you a happy, healthy and prosperous 2015! To quote comedian Joey Adams: “May all of your troubles last as long as your New Year’s resolutions”. ☺ The circulation of Tuesday News Clips continues to grow; we are now reaching 900 folks with our weekly electronic newsletter. Please let us know if you would like to add any of your staff to our mailing list. I’ve received many positive comments regarding my “Craig’s Quips” column in TNC, and since you enjoy them, I’ll keep them coming. If the November and December sale of Chamber Gift Checks are a predictor of the future, than 2015 should be a great year. We sold approximately $30,000 in the month of November and an equal number in December. Purchase volumes were comparable between city residents and local businesses that were buying the checks for their employees. Our Annual Chamber Dinner and Awards Presentation was a success with a record 240 members in attendance at the Prairie Center. I would like to give special thanks to Manitou Americas for being the Premier Sponsor of our dinner. We also had a record number of award finalists this year, turn to page 4 to see the list of nominees and the winners. On December 10th members joined us for our annual holiday open house in the beautiful and historic Frisby House. You may be interested to know that this lovely old building, built in 1865 by Leander Frisby, will be celebrating its’ 150th birthday this year. Please be sure to mark your calendars for our Home, Garden & Leisure Show scheduled for March 13th, 14th and 15th at Washington County Fair Park & Conference Center. There is an old marketing adage that says “people can’t buy your product or service if they don’t know that you exist”. If you are in the retail or service industry here is your chance to meet 3,000 local area residents over a three day period. I strongly encourage you to join us as an exhibitor at this year’s show. Look for more details on page 6 or call us for additional information, but act fast because space SPECIAL INSERTS: is limited. The candidates began their day in Hartford where they toured the Schauer Arts and Activities Center. Their next stop was the West Bend Co/Regal Ware museum to learn about the history of manufacturing in West Bend and Kewaskum. Lunch was special as two area historians, Richard Klumb and Prudence Pick-Hway shared stories of the past. Fellow classmate Amy Becker gave a brief tour of the Library and talked about the new “Patrons Park” project. The day concluded at the Washington County Historical Society where they enjoyed the old jail as well as a climb to the top of the Old Courthouse tower. Public Safety Day On December 11, 2014 the leadership group experienced a behind the scenes tour of public safety. The day began at the Courthouse where the group heard from Judge Andrew Gonring and other members of the county’s district attorney’s office as well as the State of Wisconsin Public Defender’s department. The next stop was an “eye-opening” tour of the Washington County jail. The group then enjoyed chili and conversation with the West Bend Fire Dept. The tour of the fire station was very interesting as we all now know the difference between a fire truck and a fire engine. The final stop of the day was the West Bend Police Department. Police Chief Ken Meuler addressed the group on the challenges facing the law enforcement officers. The class also had the opportunity to tour the new Police Dept. facility. If you are interested in more information on the Leadership Greater West Bend program please contact the Chamber (262) 338-2666. Chamber Ambassadors made their annual donation to the Albrecht Free Clinic at their holiday luncheon held December 3, 2014 at the Chamber office. Thank you!
