MEMBERS’ UPDATE INSIDE THIS ISSUE: EXHIBITIONS EDUCATION DEVELOPMENT MEMBERSHIP/RECOGNITION EPMA STORE EL PASO MUSEUM OF ART 2014 NEWSLETTER 1 Message from EPMA Director I am very pleased with the new ways the museum is connecting to our community and making the museum experience even richer. With our exhibition programs, Museum School studio art classes and docent guided tours as spring boards, our Community Engagement Manager Laura Zamarripa and a remarkable curatorial and education staff have reached out and embraced opportunities across the region, and the community has responded. In 2013, strong renewed relationships with our cultural partners continued to grow as we witnessed another dynamic January of four movies and four Bach’s Lunch performances with El Paso Pro-Musica, at which time the music performed is linked by museum staff and Artistic Director Zuill Bailey to works from our European painting collection. In addition three presentations with museum staff and Music Director Bohuslav Rattay successfully connected early 20th-century American symphony composers and celebrated artists featured in Discovering the American Modern 1907-1936: The King Collection. And for the third year in a row, during our fall partnership with the Tom Lea Institute, the museum staff offered a series of programs dedicated to the art of Tom Lea and history of El Paso as inspiration for creative achievements. Equally exciting was the development of new relationships with community cultural groups. We introduced an opportunity to engage in poetry readings in partnership with Hoja de Ruta in spring of 2013, which was held in conjunction with 70 Years of Mexican Art: New Languages, New Worlds. Romeo and Julieta was performed by Shakespeare-on-the-Rocks at the museum auditorium as part of our 2013 Bienal Ciudad Juárez – El Paso Biennial. In conjunction with Discovering the American Modern, three new cultural relationships developed: The Birth of Modern Dance was performed by ZAP Dance Group, the brainchild of David Mills; in partnership with the Jazz Ensembles of the Music Department of the University of Texas at El Paso, A Night of Ragtime to Jazz was performed; and in concert with Laura Tate Goldman emerged the great jazz, blues, and soft rock standards of the 1920s through the 1940s. This year we also continued our efforts to solidify the museum’s relationship with our colleges and universities. With Texas Tech University (TTU) College of Architecture, we opened the TTU 2 EL PASO MUSEUM OF ART College of Architecture Resource Library in our Algur H. Meadows Library, and the College of Architecture presented six stunning lectures on Modern Architecture in our museum auditorium. A strong Museum Studies and Art History program at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) allowed the museum to work with the School of Visual Arts to offer four outstanding volunteer/ intern opportunities to students in our curatorial and education departments; and we were honored again to have UTEP Assistant Professor of Modern and Contemporary Art History Dr. Stacy Schultz lead an informative and interesting workshop on contemporary art featured in Navigating Art Languages. Our community relationships with the Independent School Districts continued to strengthen last year in part due to busing grants from The Boeing Company, Theresa E. Bustamante & Jorge A. Vergen, and Kirk & Judy Robison. We reached eight school districts of students in El Paso County and welcomed students from both Gadsden and Las Cruces New Mexico Independent School Districts last year. And with the generosity of grants from the Moor, Wilma D. Moleen, Marian Meaker Apteckar, and Shiloff Family foundations the museum added a fourth faculty member and will stage a public reception and an exhibition of the student artwork in May 2014 for our Neighborhood Kids program with Aoy and Lamar elementary schools. For greater outreach through our Museum School studio art programs, we worked directly with AVANCE to pilot a visual arts literacy preschool art program last spring through the generosity of a grant with the Texas Commission on the Arts and we expanded the Museum School program to preschool aged students through a grant from The Boeing Company. In addition, special initiatives were held with the Boys and Girls Club of El Paso to better reach out to and distribute scholarships to our summer art camps supported through a grant from JPMorgan Chase Foundation. Our community partnerships are solid and growing, and in large part the reason for our continued success. In 2014 watch the trend continue with new and continued emerging partnerships. Experience for yourself how the El Paso Museum of Art is growing and changing to better meet the needs of our community and our Members. Come visit us soon – and often! Director Sean McGlynn has taken an interim assignment as a Deputy City Manager for the next six months. During that time, I will be serving as the Interim Director of the department. It’s a role I am excited about, having divided my 12-year tenure with the department almost equally between the El Paso Museum of Art and the Cultural Affairs Division. In 1998, the relocation of the El Paso Museum of Art downtown was seen as a pioneering move kindling urban revitalization. Fifteen years later, the museum serves as an anchor to a vibrant, state-designated arts district that continues to grow. Thanks to both private investment, public support and the 2012 passage of the largest bond in the city’s history, downtown projects and improvements are accelerating at an unprecedented pace. Although construction on the new ballpark has received the most notice, there are lots of other exciting projects progressing. In early November, we broke ground on the new pedestrian pathway that will shorten the walk between the museums and Union Plaza to five minutes, with lots of greenery, public art and community spaces throughout. The 18-month expansion and redesign of San Jacinto Plaza, home of Luis Jiménez’s iconic Los Lagartos (which is undergoing extensive conservation) is well underway. Additional bond-funded projects in the near future will include improvements to Arts Festival Plaza, addition of pedestrian amenities and bus bays behind EPMA to make school visits safer and the preparation for a full-service café in EPMA. This is the case with The James Shelton Collection of Modern and Contemporary Art. Gathered gradually over twenty-some years Shelton has focused on late Modernist works and the responses to Modernism often referred to as Post-modernism Art. Including paintings, sculptures and drawings by late modern giants such as Alexander Calder, Jean Dubuffet, Hans Hoffman and Willem De Kooning as well as the Abstract Expressionists Franz Kline, Morris Louis, Cy Twomby, Helen Frankenthaler and Joan Mitchell, the Pop artists Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg and Wayne Thiebaud, and the Minimalists Donald Judd, Sol Le Witt and Ellsworth Kelly the Shelton collection could serve as any museum’s foundation of this period. In addition to masterworks by these artists the Shelton Collection also offers the opportunity to the public to learn about other more recent artists such as Fritz Scholder and Jean Michel Basquiat who responded to earlier modernist movements, but also represent a broadening of the once mostly Euro-centric art world. This exhibition is sponsored, in part, by the El Paso Museum of Art Foundation. Shelton, Jr. 2014 NEWSLETTER 7 EXHIBITIONS (continued) An Expansive Regard: Selected Works from the Collection of Juan Sandoval Through February 17th, 2014 Gateway Gallery Local art collector Juan A. Sandoval II has called El Paso home for more than thirty years; during this time he has avidly developed a diverse collection of hundreds of artworks spanning different media and cultures. Just some of the many historic and contemporary area artists represented in his collection are Manuel Acosta, Marta Arat, Francisco Delgado, Luis Jiménez (with approximately fifty works), and Mauricio Olague. Sandoval’s penchant for collecting began as a young boy, when he amassed a rock collection in his hometown of Monte Vista in Colorado’s San Luis Valley. Since then the curiosity of the boy developed into the understanding and expertise of the man, yet there remains Sandoval’s singular passion for discovering new treasures and making them an intimate part of his life and learning. Juan Sandoval earned his MA in Library and Information Science from Denver University in 1975, and since the early 1980s he has worked at the Library of the University of Texas at El Paso. In addition to serving as Reference Librarian and Subject Specialist for Art and Chicano Studies, he works closely with African-American Studies and Asian Studies. Notably, these varied professional activities are mirrored in Sandoval’s energies as an art collector. His collecting interests encompass prints, photographs, paintings, sculptures, and pottery from the El Paso region, his native San Luis Valley, Oaxaca and other parts of Mexico, and places further afield such as Russia and Poland. This eclecticism notwithstanding, Sandoval’s collection possesses core characteristics—most notably, the attention to the evocative human figure, whose distortions, surroundings, or groupings with other bodies imply often uncanny narratives. And, just as Sandoval the librarian enjoys assisting and interacting with students and researchers at all levels, many of the works in his collection are by artists he knows or knew personally. Indeed, his collecting endeavors extend to autographs by Mexican and Mexican-American writers and artists, of which he now possesses about one hundred fifty. Free to the public and on view for several months in the EPMA’s Gateway Gallery, An Expansive Regard: Selected Works from the Collection of Juan Sandoval highlights a spectrum of works showcasing the human focus and spirited range that mark the engaged collecting pursuits of Juan Sandoval. Originating in the late 16th century Saint Anthony of Padua retablos are meant to show contemplation of the mystical life of the Christ child. Known as the patron saint of lost articles, unmarried women seeking a man and of the poor, Saint Anthony was born in Lisbon and is one of the most well-known Franciscans in the world after Saint Francis of Assisi. Saint Anthony is often depicted as a young, beardless man wearing the Franciscan robe of blue or brown with Christ in his arms and holding either a lily or a book. The retablos included in this exhibition depict Saint Anthony of Padua indoors, outdoors and at times in heaven. The Christ Child almost always wears red and either holds a cross or a flower. Fifteen of these sixteen works of art from the 18th and 19th centuries were produced by trained and self-taught anonymous, Mexican artists whose spiritual devotion to this subject motivated their artistic abilities. The sixteenth retablo in this exhibition is actually a signed, early retablo by the distinguished yet understudied artist Nicolás Enríquez (1704–c. 1790). 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Acrylic Painting Made Easy, ages 15 and up. The Art and Culture of Beverages Through December 2014 Patricia and Jonathan Rogers Grand Lobby Most of us give little thought to the objects that hold our liquid refreshment, yet they often have specific shapes and materials rooted in the cultural histories of the drinks they contain. This third exhibit in the decorative arts series explores objects in the El Paso Museum of Art’s collection that provide a revealing glimpse of the art and culture behind what we drink and how we drink it. The exhibit includes a selection of wine glasses, porcelain tea cups, a silver punch bowl and more. They are arranged primarily according to the type of beverage they held, punch, beer, wine and water, coffee and tea. An additional section explores the use of porcelain decoration to promote politics in revolutionary and Napoleonic France, and the challenges of dating decorative arts pieces. Gaspar Enríquez: Metaphors of El Barrio presents artwork from throughout Enríquez’s career assembled from collections in El Paso, Texas and throughout the United States. Enríquez is often identified as “the quintessential Chicano Texas artist,” although it would be just as correct to describe him as an American, portrait painter who blends realism with contemporary popular culture. Nevertheless, one could easily go down a list counting off the significant series of artworks and other accomplishments of Enríquez’s career: the wearable and the book-like metal objects of the La Familia series, the black and white full-figure portraits of the En la Esquina series, the artist portraits and metal heart icons of the Puro Corazón series, the publication of the twelve paintings of the Elegy on the Death of Cesar Chavez series. The list goes on but, does not even mention the artist’s involvement with numerous mural projects throughout El Paso, the years contributed as president of the Juntos Art Association or the three decades teaching art at Bowie High School. Enríquez’s art has been continually admired, exhibited and collected because it is serious, real and confronts relevant issues. His subjects range from children to teenagers, from artists to everyday persons and typically depict persons from El Barrio, where the artist grew up. The slice of culture that Enríquez explores includes many details about the importance of traditions, family and identity in Mexican-American life. Integrating the iconography of youth culture, and Catholic and pre-Columbian religions simultaneously Enríquez subtly critiques/examines the bicultural, Chicano experience. Even after retiring from teaching art Enríquez continues to balance numerous complex projects simultaneously. For example, for the last several years Enríquez has been deeply involved in the restoration of an ancient adobe building into studio spaces in the 400-year-old presidio of San Elizario in El Paso’s Mission Valley. And since 2012 Enríquez has been busy completing numerous sketches and several large portrait paintings as part of a commission for the new El Paso Baseball Stadium. In addition to including over fifty paintings, prints and sculptures from 1983 - 2013 Gaspar Enríquez: Metaphors of El Barrio also includes a video interview with the artist and a book of the same title with texts by Constance Cortez, Ruben Cordova, Christian Gerstheimer, Benito Huerta and Lucy Lippard. Enríquez’s art has been included in many exhibitions throughout his career such as: CARA/ Chicano Art/Resistance and Affirmation 1965-1985, Chicano Visions: American Painters on the Verge, Arte Caliente: Works from the Joe Diaz Collection and Infinite Mirror: Images of American Identity. Special guests from Historic Interpretations, Inc. out of North Carolina will bring some of our Kress Collection paintings to life Ricardo Chavarria: 41, 47, 50-53, 59, 60, 61 February 23rd – June 29th, 2014 Gateway Gallery The bold acrylic abstractions of Ricardo Chavarria emanate and pulse with color, light, and a unique internal energy, which seems to both radiate and move back within itself. Several of Chavarria’s paintings—some of them executed in the last year and appearing for the first time—will be featured through spring 2014 in the EPMA’s Gateway Gallery. The artist’s captivating compositions combine the transcendental presence of Western color-field painting or Eastern sand mandalas with contemporary LED-like color and industrial-looking surfaces. Chavarria uses plastic syringes and squeeze bottles to apply his thick paint. The resulting creations are the product of an interesting tension of processes: improvisation of color and design choices evolving within the strict parameters of an initial center point and grid system, and time-intensive labor producing a uniform surface akin to manufactured rubber. Born in El Paso in 1980, Chavarria has for the past year been working in a studio in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. He began focusing exclusively on painting in 2008, following studies at the Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences in Tempe, Arizona, and a career as a sound and recording engineer in New York. One of Chavarria’s paintings appeared in the EPMA Artists on Art series in summer–fall 2012, and from May 15th to June 23rd, 2013 five of his works were featured at the contemporary art gallery The Proposition in New York, which represents the artist. 2:00 p.m. World Cinema in the El Paso Energy Auditorium. Gateway and C2 Galleries Ricardo Chavarria (American, 1980 - ) 47, 2012 Acrylic on canvas, 48” x 40” Collection of Fernandez-Stevenson 2014 NEWSLETTER 13 EXHIBITIONS (continued) Luis Jiménez: Native Son February 9th – May 25th, 2014 Peter and Margaret de Wetter Gallery Complementing the museum’s concurrent retrospective devoted to Gaspar Enríquez, the smaller exhibition Luis Jiménez: Native Son features work from the permanent collection by an artist who served as an important role model to Enríquez. Significantly, both Enríquez and Jiménez before him served as mentors for a variety of Chicano artists in the region. Sometimes called the “Godfather” of Chicano art, Luis Jiménez was born and raised in El Paso as the son of an immigrant father from Mexico. He went on to become one of El Paso’s first artists to gain national recognition. A sculptor, printmaker, and draftsman, Jiménez specialized in fiberglass and epoxy sculptures, lithographs and etchings, and colored-pencil drawings. In his art Jiménez celebrated humanity and his Mexican-American heritage. Luis Jiménez: Native Son features lithographs and drawings ranging in subject from humans to animals, and including finished works as well as detail studies for the monumental figural sculpture Sodbuster (completed 1981). Variously narrative or allegorical, the images illustrate Jiménez’s attention to nature, humanity, the life of immigrants, and the world of the barrio. One of the large color drawings in the exhibition was a commission by the Guild of the EPMA Association for the design of a poster announcing the exhibition Raíces antiguas, visiones nuevas = Ancient Roots, New Visions, which toured nationally in 1977-78. Jiménez utilized many of his prints to investigate ideas for sculpture, and Alligator Study relates to the monumental sculpture he created for the central square of El Paso, affectionately known as “La Plaza de los Lagartos.” The lithograph was gifted to the museum in 1995 by Frank Ribelin. Finally, in addition to Jiménez’s drawings and prints, the exhibition includes the 1996–98 fiberglass maquette for Fireman. Depicting a fireman shooting a hose onto a large flame, the composition expresses Jiménez’s admiration for ordinary workers. Notably, it also serves as an allegorical self-portrait of the artist, who learned to weld and airbrush in his father’s El Paso neon-sign shop. EL PASO MUSEUM OF ART Anonymous (Mexican, 19th C.) Artists include international historical masters such as Ansel Adams, Albert Bierstadt, Thomas Hart Benton, Gustave Doré, Lawren Harris, and Rockwell Kent, and contemporary artists working in traditional and new media, such as Lita Albuquerque, Xavier Cortada, and Chris Drury. Melding the documentary, the romantic, and the sublime, the exhibition moves from the art of early artist-naturalist-explorers to the creations of living artists, who collaborate with scientists and writers in order to reveal the beauty and significance of ice-laden landscapes, as well as their newfound fragility within the context of human-accelerated climate change. Vanishing Ice: Alpine and Polar Landscapes in Art, 1775-2012 was organized by the Whatcom Museum. Major funding has been provided by The Paul G. New Initiatives An Interdisciplinary Teacher Resource Teachers of grades 3-12 have a new interdisciplinary guide to the Kress Collection to help them incorporate art into their lessons. The guide, funded through a grant from The Boeing Company, ties artworks from the collection to pre-visit, inmuseum, and post-visit lessons that address the TEKS in each discipline. The guide also includes images of the artworks for reference and a link to the Kress Foundation website. This resource will be mailed to recipients of Boeing bus scholarships and will be available online to all educators. The Docent Program Forges Ahead The docent program has gone digital. No, we haven’t replaced our docents with virtual tours, and the training still takes place at the museum, but we have introduced a web-based calendar for docents to sign up for tours and keep track of new ones as they are scheduled, as well as any changes or cancellations. The calendar can be accessed from any computer at any time by all docents. This is part of a general initiative to create more opportunities for our docents to function as a team and to utilize new technologies. They will also be working together to develop tours that clearly address the interdisciplinary curriculum needs of the school groups, and incorporate interactive elements such as fabrics and paint samples that represent the textures in an artwork, or movement and sound that help interpret a painting. The docent team members have wonderful and creative ideas and we’re looking forward to seeing our students and visitors even more engaged in the exploration of art. Neighborhood Kids Neighborhood Kids is a grant funded program serving two local elementary schools within a five mile radius of the El Paso Museum of Art (EPMA). Currently, the program serves third graders from Lamar Elementary School and fourth graders from Aoy Elementary School. Students in the program visit the EPMA eight times during the school year. During the visits, students engage with the Museum’s collection through a series of close looking activities that exercise their language and writing skills. They take concepts they learn in the galleries and apply them to their own artwork in the studios. Each lesson is led by a team of a Museum School Faculty member and EPMA Docent. Lessons are designed to complement classroom curricula and incorporate concepts students are learning at their school. The 2013-14 season began in September and is the 16th year of the program. Thanks to the generosity of the Moor and Wilma D. Moleen Foundations, the EPMA provided each student with a personalized sketchbook to record their gallery activities. The museum is also happy to announce an exhibition in late May of the students’ artwork and artist statements. All are invited to celebrate and review the students’ accomplishments from the school year. Grant Awarded by the Samuel H. Kress Foundation The Samuel H. Kress Foundation awarded $65,000 to the El Paso Museum of Art to launch “Animating the Kress Collection,” a project to produce sixteen animated videos highlighting works of art in the permanent collection. The two-year project begins in summer 2014 and enables the museum to offer several paid internships to college age students skilled in animation. The project will be led by independent multimedia producer, Sabiha Khan, Ph.D., and Laura Zamarripa, Community Engagement Manager for the museum. Animating the Kress Collection will follow current teaching models promoting non-traditional formats and accessibility, as those endorsed by Smarthistory, a project now part of the Khan Academy, whose mission is to provide a “free world-class education for anyone anywhere.” The Trustees for Samuel H. Kress Foundation expressed appreciation for this “exciting and timely” project and the museum’s interest in connecting through social media. The videos will feature interviews, images of the artworks, complementary material such as period music sound clips, artist self-portraits, illustrations, and more. Artworks that lend themselves to storytelling have been chosen, including pieces by Canaletto, Strozzi, Van Dyck and others. The videos will be available on the museum Website, Facebook page, Vimeo, and YouTube. Schools scheduled to visit the museum will receive a link to the animations in pre-visit materials, and the videos will be linked to QR codes on the object labels in the galleries. 2014 NEWSLETTER 17 DEVELOPMENT/COLLECTORS’ CLUB Membership We are happy to report that EPMA Membership continues to grow thanks to recent targeted mailing campaigns in El Paso and other efforts. Over the last 6 months the Museum has seen an increase of 135 new members through these efforts. We are gearing up for another wave of mailings this coming spring. The Museum would like to thank Robert and Tara Herman of North American Communications for donating all printed materials for these mailing campaigns. Collectors’ Club On September 8th, 2013 the Collectors’ Club hosted a private reception with Maria and Barry King in conjunction with Discovering the American Modern 1907-1936: The King Collection. A tour led by Director Michael Tomor and the Kings followed. Ten members of the El Paso Museum of Art’s Collectors’ Club (CClub) traveled to Baltimore October 28-31, 2013. The CClub visited the American Visionary Art Museum, Evergreen House, Bromo Seltzer Arts Tower, School 33 Art Center, the studio of local artist Lania D’Agostino, Garrett-Jacobs Mansion, Walters Art Museum, and the Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA). A highlight of the tour was a private tour of Matisse’s Marguerite: Model Daughter at the BMA. After carefully scrutinizing the permanent collection the Curatorial Department identified the gap in the museum’s collection that was to be filled by the Members’ Choice artwork this year. The artworks were displayed from November 12-24, 2013. Leading up to and during this special event on November 21st museum members visited to view the selections and cast votes for their favorite artwork. The theme for 2013 was a work of art on paper by a contemporary Mexican artist. The artists that were included for consideration this year were Demián Flores, Gabriel Orozco, Dr. Lakra (Jerónimo López Ramírez), and Francisco Toledo.
