Larry Lewis
Larry L. “Butch” Lewis, 73, of
rural Bonaparte died Friday, Dec.
27, 2013, at his home.
Born July 18, 1940, near Utica, he
was the son of William and Edith
Robbins Lewis. She married Doris
Basquan, and they later divorced.
Mr. Lewis was a graduate
of Bonaparte High School. He
worked as an inspector at the
Iowa Army Ammunition Plant.
Survivors include two sisters,
Sharon Elliott of Bonaparte and
Gerry Roller of Knoxville, Tenn.;
three nieces; two great-nieces;
and one great-nephew.
He was preceded in death by his
parents, one sister and two brothers.
Cremation has been accorded.
Visitation will be from 5 to 6
p.m. Monday at Pedrick Funeral
Home in Keosauqua, where family
will be present.
The memorial service for Mr.
Lewis will be at 6 p.m. Monday at
Pedrick Funeral Home, with the
Rev. Timothy Roller officiating. Private burial will be at a later date in
Bonaparte Cemetery.

Linda Lou Simpson, 63, of
Oquawka, Ill., died at 11:55 a.m.
Thursday, Dec. 26, 2013, at her home.
Born Nov. 12, 1950, in Burlington,
she was the daughter of Charles F.
and Maxine T. Gerdom Tracy. On
July 27, 1968, she married Billy L.
Simpson in Galesburg, Ill.
Mrs. Simpson was raised in the
Oquawka and Galesburg area and
was a 1968 graduate of Galesburg
High School. She began work at
O.T. Johnson Department Store in
Galesburg during the 1960s. She
then worked at Protexall for a time
and then served several nursing
homes locally as a certified nurses
assistant for several years.
She enjoyed going to flea markets and especially loved spending
time with her grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband;
one daughter, Cherie Johnson
of Raritan, Ill.; two sons, Billy L.
Simpson II of Oquawka and Jared
Simpson of Davenport; three granddaughters; two grandsons; three sisters, Charlotte Druin of Oquawka,
Carolyn Bigger of Gladstone, Ill., and
Connie Day of Galesburg.
She is preceded in death by her
parents and one nephew.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m.

River Hospice
House in West
Burlington.
Born Dec. 22, 1956, in Burlington, she was the daughter of
James Louis and Shirley Eastburn
Curley. On Nov. 3, 1995, she married Marvin McCoy Sr. in Burlington. He died Aug. 6, 1996.
Mrs. Curley-McCoy was a Burlington High School graduate. She
worked at Skerik Auto Parts and
helped her husband in his construction business, McCoy Construction. For the last 17 years, she
was a dredge operator at Cessford
Construction, where she loved
going to work.
She loved being outdoors, being
in the water, swimming and time
spent on the river. She was an avid
Cubs and Bears fan. She loved her
pets and spending time with her
family.
Survivors include her two sons,
Joe Curley and Brent McCoy, both
of Burlington; one daughter, Cody
McCoy of Burlington; four grandchildren; two sisters, Barb Drew
and Mary Daedlow, both of Burlington; one brother, Steven Curley
of Burlington; two nieces; and one
nephew.
She was preceded in death by
her parents, husband and one
stepson.
Visitation will be from 9:30 to
10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Lunning
Chapel, where family will receive
friends.

Born Dec. 15, 1948, in Burlington, she was the daughter of
Wayne E. and Charlene Helen
Gantz Mooney. On Jan. 23, 1991,
she married Richard D. Lyon in
Burlington.
Mrs. Lyon was a 1967 graduate of Burlington High School
and earned an Associate of Science degree at SCC. She worked
as the receptionist/assistant for
Burlington Oral Surgeon PC for
many years. She was active with
her classmates in their activities
and reunions, a member of the
National Guard Ladies Auxiliary
and enjoyed bird watching, traveling, plants and her family, especially her grandchildren. She was
of the Protestant faith.
Survivors include her husband;
one daughter, Kelly Johnson of
Marion; one son, Brian Wolgemuth of Fort Madison; one stepdaughter, Jenny Reece of Palo;
one stepson, Jeff Lyon of West Des
Moines; 13 grandchildren; one sister, Linda Deets of Burlington; and
one nephew.
She was preceded in death by
her parents and one stepson.

Derby, 93, of
Dubuque, lifelong resident of
Burlington, died
Monday, Dec. 23,
2013, at Mercy
Medical CenterDubuque.
Born Jan. 20,
1920, in Harper, he was the son of
Charles and Christine Saner Derby.
On July 17, 1951, he married Mary
Ruth Stuart in Lynnville.
Mr. Derby helped with farming at a
young age and worked with the Iowa
State Department of Transportation.
He enjoyed gardening, especially vegetable gardening, and solving puzzles.
He was an Iowa Hawkeyes fan.
Survivors include his wife; two
children, David Derby and Deborah Stinson; seven grandchildren;
five great-grandchildren; one sister, Thelma Horsey; and nieces
and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his
parents and 10 siblings.
The funeral for Mr. Derby will
be at 1 p.m. today at Egelhof, Siegert and Casper Westview Funeral
Home and Crematory, where

Born on January 9, 1958
in Burlington, Iowa, Dan was
the son of Paul H. and Shirley
I. Hanson Hoschek.
He was of the Protestant
Faith.
Dan was a graduate of
Notre Dame High School
class of 1976 and attended
Estherville
College.
He
played football in high school
and college. Dan worked
for the Iowa Department of
Correctional Services at the
men’s Residential Facility
for 24 years. He owned and
operated a cleaning business, and was active in the
Farmer’s Market in produce
sales. He liked to work in the
yard and garden. Dan also
enjoyed hunting and fishing. Over the years Dan had
many dogs; his favorites were
Daisy and Ella.
Dan is survived by his
wife Joyce of Burlington who
recently celebrated 13 years
together. One daughter, Shelby Hoschek of New London,
Iowa and one son Nathan Hoschek also of New London,
Iowa. Two step-daughters,
Wendy (Kasey) Rider of Danville, IA and Megan Doyle of
Burlington, Iowa. Two stepsons, Derrick (Jaleesa) Doyle
of Danville, IA and Curtis
(Candi) Doyle also of Danville, IA. Grandchildren and
step-grandchildren.

Ayden, Mykael, Kamey, Kinley, Donntasia and Valicea.

Mrs. Crist was born on
April 14, 1916, in Yarmouth,
IA. She was the daughter of
Benton J. Brown and Susie
Melvina Peckham Brown.
Mrs. Crist graduated from
Yarmouth High School in
1934, and married Charles
Weldon Crist in October of
1934.
The community of Morning Sun, IA was home to Mrs.
Crist throughout her adult
life. She was an employee of
Nichol’s Produce before becoming secretary/bookkeeper at the Morning Sun Grain
Company. She worked as an
employee of the Minnis’ family until her retirement from
the grain company in 1984.
Mrs. Crist was among
other things, a dedicated employee; member of the Morning Sun Methodist Church
and the TT Club. During her
younger years she loved to
garden, dance, shop flea
markets, collect teapots and
was an avid card player. She
was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother
and was fiercely loyal to her
family.
She was preceded in death
by her parents, her husband,

only child, Janice Lee Crist
