Dr. Richard M. Torack, a retired
researcher and professor at
Washington University School
of Medicine, died Thursday, (Jan.
22, 2009) at Delmar Gardens of
Meramec Valley in Fenton.
He had been diagnosed with
Alzheimer's disease, his family
said. He was 81 and had lived in
Glendale.
Dr. Torack taught in the medical school and did research on
dementia and Alzheimer's.
According to family history,
his mother chose Richard, her
first son, to become a doctor, and
announced that her second son
would become a lawyer. To earn
tuition money, the family sold its
house and bought a small grocery in Garfield, N.J., where they

graduated
from
Seton Hall and
Georgetown
University
School of
Medicine. He
Torack
became a flight
surgeon in the
Air Force and suffered hearing
loss in his left E:ar from flying in
B-29 bombers.
He became an assistant professor at Yale University, an associate professor at Cornell University and in 1968 a professor at
Washington University.

Area police departments reported numerous accidents and
spinouts on the roadways. A teenager from Bonne Terre, Mo., was
killed Monday evening when her
car skidded from ice-covered Hillsboro Road four miles east of Bonne
Terre. Mallory Hicks, 18, was pro-
nounced dead at the scene.
Most of the St. Louis area's
schools called off classes Tuesday. Rockwood School District
was among many that made that
call before 10 p.m. Monday. District spokeswoman Kim Cranston said the decision "was based
upon the best information we

Dr. Torack was an original
member of the "Tuesday Brown
Bag Series" at Washington University's department of neurology, discussing what was then
known and unknown about dementia. That pioneering work
contributed to the university
establishing its Alzheimer's Disease Research Center, said Dr.
John C. Morris, the center's director.
Dr. Torack retired in the early
1990s and continued to work on
his research.
His wife, Catherine "Kit"
Torack, died in 1996.
Visitation will be from 4 to
8 p.m. Friday at Bopp Chapel,
10610 Manchester Road, Kirkwood. The funeral Mass will be
celebrated .at 10 a.m. Saturday at
Mary Qµeen of Peace Catholic
Church, 676 West Lockwood Avenue, Webster Groves. Interment
will be at Resurrection Cemetery.

daughter, Margaret .Althage of
Kirkwood; and four sons, Richard
M. Torack Jr. of St. Louis, James
Torack of Rock Hill, Thomas
Torack of Oakland and William
Torack of Glendale.

For most students, it was
only their second snow day this
winter. Lambert-St. Louis International Airport has recorded
only 6 inches of snow so far this
winter season. The only other
noteworthy storm was a 2.4-inch
snowfall on Nov. 30.
A typical winter brings 18
inches of snow to St. Louis. Last
year's total was 30 inches. The
record here is 67.6 inches, which
fell in winter 1911-12. The biggest
in recent memory was the 66inch total of winter 1977-78.
This season's snowstorm track
generally has been running well
north of St. Louis, said Britt of
the Weather Service. Des Moines
and Chicago, for example, are
both well above normal for
snowfall. Chicago already has
had 60 inches.

Kathleen "Kathy" Ash, 56, was
an animating force with the St.
Louis Classical Guitar Society.
Mrs. Ash, who died of a massive coronary Monday (Jan. 26,
· 2009) at her University City
home, was married to Guitar
Society president William B.
Ash for 30 years. From 1980
on, they ran the Guitar Society
together, expanding it from a
small group of aficionados to
one of the three largest guitarsu pport organizations in the
United States.
Mrs. Ash was the editor
of "Guitar Notes," the Guitar
Society's newsletter, and also
handled graphic design, grant
writing and organizational
planning. Most subscribers
knew her as the friendly voice
of the Guitar Society, and she
could usually be found at concerts helping to smooth over
one crisis or another.
Her husband said, "She
treated all ticket buyers with
respect, lobbied for deserving
artists and wanted concerts
to start on!
