Mabel Nylene Pierce, 60
of Huntington, passed away
Saturday, September 7, 2013.
She was born August 24,
1953; the only daughter of
Ernest and Betty Jo Maynard
Adams. Visitation will be
Wednesday, September 11,
2013 from 2 to 4 PM at
the Ceredo-Kenova Funeral
Home. There will be no
funeral service. Mabel was
a homemaker, a mother, and
an aunt to so many that truly
loved her. She was preceded in death by her grandparents Burl Sr. and Mamie
Ann Maynard, her parents,
her brother Tiny Maynard,
and her son Little Ralph
Thacker. She leaves behind
to mourn her loss her son
Matthew Thacker and her
daughters Yvonne Turpin
and Hope (Kevin) Lively.
Her sisters: Josephine
Wright, Juanita Barnett,
Marie Miller, Ramona
Miller and Beulahmae Miller
and her brothers: Ernest

He was born March 15,
1955 at Wayne, a son of the
late Edward and Mary Watts
Adkins. He was a member of
the Spring Valley Freewill
Baptist Church. Brothers
Orvel and Timothy Adkins
also preceded him in death.
Survivors include three
sisters, Martha Maynard
(Arthur) of Lavalette, WV,
Pamela Adkins and Sharon
Thompson, both of Wayne;
four brothers, Braxton
Adkins (Charlotte) of
Huntington, Charles Adkins
(Kathy) of Dunlow, WV,
Joseph Adkins and Noah
Adkins, both of Wayne; a
special sister-in-law, Judy
Adkins, and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
The family extends special
thanks to Cabell-Huntington
Hospital for all the special
care given to Thurman and
family, and also to Hospice
of Huntington, Dr. Becher,
Dr. Gillenwater, and the
5-West Oncology nurses. We
will miss our special little
brother. God is good. God is
great. His nephews Ronnie,
Chuck, Austin, Sean, Jerry
and Jason will serve as
pallbearers. Friends called
from 6-9 p.m. Tuesday at
Morris Funeral Home.

and all the young youth league players.
It’s football time. Let’s hope that Marshall
University comes alive this year. My late
husband Bob and I used to have season
tickets and never missed a game, rain or
snow for several years. I really miss attending the games. We also traveled to many out
of town games and then went on to Myrtle
Beach with friends.
My sister in-law Betty Ward of Ridgelawn
Drive, Rt. 75 invited me to go to Camden
Park on Saturday, August 24th for Cabell
Huntington Hospital Fun Day. Betty’s a
retired I.C.U. nurse and they had invited
retirees and one guest. We enjoyed the
day, 12:00 to 3:00 having a fried chicken
lunch and riding the train and ski lift before
playing bingo for prizes. We didn’t win
anything but we had fun trying to. “Thanks
Bet for the invite.
Wednesday, August 28th I took off for
the Smoky Mountains with my daughter
and son-in-law David and Carla Ball. We
missed that big storm that came through.
My daughter in Ashland texted us to say
it had blown their solar system for their
pool over in the neighbor’s driveway.They
also had heavy rain and hail She said she
got into an inside closet she was so scared.
Her daughter Morgan who works at King’s
Daughters Hospital in Ashland emergency
room lost their electric but their generators
kicked on which was a life saver. It must
have been a scary time.
We had a good time in Gatlinburg
Tennessee. One evening we went to the
Dixie Stampede which we had never
attended and it was really a fun evening.
We said we would have to go back and take
the great-grandchildren. They would love
it, except it was kind of hard eating dinner
with your fingers while it was so dark at
times. I asked and received plastic utensils.
The preshow of 3 guys playing and singing
was really enjoyable, then you went into
the big arena for the horse show and dinner.
There were over a thousand people there,

Jack Allen Stevens, 65,
of Louisa, Ky. passed away

at Kings Daughters Medical
Center in Ashland, Ky. He
was born March 3, 1948
in Louisa, Ky. a son of the
late John and Tora Griffith
Stevens. He was a maintenance mechanic for AEP,
and was a United States
Army Veteran, he was also
a member of the Apperson
Lodge #195, he was of
Freewill Baptist Faith. In
addition to his parents he
was preceded in death by
two brothers, Merrill and
Sherrill Stevens.
Survivors include, his
loving wife, Lois Rae Bush
Stevens of Louisa, Ky.;
one daughter, Julie Deanna
Stevens of Louisa, Ky.; one
son, Wesley Allen Stevens
of Louisa, Ky.; four brothers, James Stevens and Tim

Bertha Ellen Salmons,
92, of Fort Gay, W.V. passed
away Monday, September
9, 2013 at her home. She
was born January 1, 1921 to
the late William and Nancy
Evans Copley. She was a
member of the Silver Creek
Baptist Church. In addition
to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 47years, Frank P.
Salmons; sons, William M.
Salmons, Roland Franklin
Salmons, Franky Salmons,
Jarvis Ellis; daughter, Nancy
M. Marcum; granddaughters, Rachell and Jacqualine
Marcum. Survivors include,

Good evening to all of
you out there, hope your
weekend was great! As for
us here on Turkey Camp it
was good until around 11:15
AM, when a tree above us
fell on the power lines, and
took out the power until
5:30PM. I stayed outside
most of the day, it was too
hot to be in the house.
It looks like we could
get rain soon and the news
spoke of rain today. I noticed
in Oklahoma (I think) they
had a really bad storm hit.
People lost their homes and
almost everything they had.
It was awful to see. The
news says that storms could
hit on the East cost as well.
Our garden is mostly
gone, just a few tomatoes
and peppers left, but it was
nice and full all summer
long. Most everyone’s gardens are gone, I suppose.

like it, but it’s well worth
your money.

at the Ceredo United Bank in the community room at 1:00 PM. If you need more
information you may call Doloris Boley,
President at 304-429-3334. Doloris says it’s
important for you to join. The bigger our
membership the more clout we will have in
Charleston with the legislators.
Did you know a tablespoon of salt in
your colored clothes wash will help you
keep the cloor in? I heard that on a cooking
show last week. And if you put 1 cup vinegar in it will soften your clothes. Then you
can make a ball out of reynolds wrap and
put it in your dryer. It will stop the static
cling. That’s a good tip for winter clothes
that you wash. I haven’t tried it yet but plan
to soon.
September 14th is the Ronald McDonald
House fundraiser chili fest. This is always a
big hit. We take a lawn chair for a sit down
and go from there. The grand kids usually
want to jump in the jumpies so that’s usually our landing point. So if you go, there’s
always a big crowd so plan a family gathering place to meet at. Everyone always says
that’s a good idea, especially bringing your
lawn chairs if you have trouble walking.
I just received a call from my cousin
Don Bias and he said he had made reservations for an October train ride for us. I’m
excited. I’ve never been on one of those
before. I know when my kids were little
their dad took us to Williamson, WV and
we rode the train back to Kenova on one of
the upper deck trains when they first came
out. Their grandfather, Basil Adkins, was
a conductor on the N&W and they were
always interested in trains. I don’t think
cousin Don has ever been on a train before.

at home as requested. He
was retired from N&S
Railroad of 58 years.
He was gifted for his
mechanical abilities and
gardening which he very
much enjoyed sharing
with family and friends.

and preceded his death.
He leaves behind two
