He spent his summers working as a roofer. He had retired from his teaching job last year. Raised in Lansing, Van Drunen had attended Lansing Christian and then Illiana Christian High School. It was while attending Trinity Christian College that he met his wife, Rita. The couple had three children and nine grandchildren. VanDrunen served in the Marine Reserves for six years. “He liked the outdoors,” said his wife. “We liked kayaking and rollerblading and playing tennis together. Preceded in death by; parents, Alfred and Helen Ewen; son, Brook Ewen. A private memorial will be held at a later date. BARBARA SMITH (nee McCay) Barbara Smith (nee McCay), age 79, of Cordova, TN passed away Saturday, July 19, 2014. Preceded in death by her husband, Arley Smith, and her parents Mae and Charles McCay. Survivors; one son, Steve (Kim) Smith of Florida; sister, Betty Eggebrecht of Highland, IN; brother, Chuck McCay (Arlene) of Lowell, IN; sister, Susan Millman (Randy) of Aiken, SC; three nieces and one nephew. Barbara was a graduate of Hammond High. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting and was an avid bridge player. She was a very generous and gracious lady and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. skating, bicycling and fishing, especially with his grandchildren. His wife said he also did a lot of gardening in recent years, growing broccoli lettuce, peppers, pumpkins, rhubarb and other vegetables. “He shared with friends and gave them away throughout the neighborhood and he got to know the neighbors that way,” she said. The couple also enjoyed traveling together and spending time with family at their childrens’ in-laws’ summer cottages. An active member of New Hope Christian Reformed Church in Lansing, Van Drunen served as an elder and deacon there. In addition to teaching at Lansing Christian School, he also coached basketball and track and was the bus coordinator and worked on arranging bus routes and scheduling drivers. “He enjoyed getting to know people and helping others,” said his wife. “He had a strong faith. Thelma "Jeannie" Kedziora, age 61, of Grovertown passed away Saturday July 26, 2014 at St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart. Jeannie was born July 24, 1953 in Cleveland, Tennessee to the late Franklin and Martha (Holden) Ghorley. Jeannie was a receiving clerk working at the Town and Country Market in Portage for 28 years. Jeannie was the first woman to graduate from the Carpenters Apprentice Training program of Carpenters Local Union #1005 in Hobart. Jeannie was also very active in area scouting, volunteering with Boy Scout Troop #84 and as pack leader for Cub Scout Pack #430. She was also very active as a Leader Trainer for the Two Waters Boy Scout District. She was also active with the Duneland Council of the Girl Scouts. Jeannie is survived by her loving husband, Dieter Kedziora; her son, Darrell (Samantha) Chandler of Portage; her sister, Margaret McDaniel of Florence, KY; two nieces: Tammy (Gary) Hartkorn and Jennifer McDaniel; one nephew, Tim (Angie) Burton; special family friend, Becky Smith; ten grandchildren: Austin, Brooke, Daniel, Cody, Briana, Nevaeh, Josh, Mika, Jamie and Andrew; and one great grandchild, Cameron. Mary Ann was born on January 7, 1945 in Gary and was raised in Hammond. She was a 1963 graduate of Bishop Noll High School. Mary Ann was married to Frank White on July 18, 1964, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her parents: Doug and Frances Belanger. She worked as a program coordinator for Sunrise Community, enjoyed travelling and spending time with her seven granddaughters.
