CONFERENCE DESCRIPTION
Rapid advances in genetic and genomic technologies have revolutionized our approach to cancer risk
assessment, screening, prevention, and targeted cancer therapies, heralding the era of personalized precision
medicine. The challenges of genetic and genomic counseling include the need for professional education
and evidence-based information regarding the clinical utility of testing for genetic variants, approaches
to interpreting genomic information, and the need to develop new clinical models to improve access to
and responsible communication of complex genomically-informed cancer risk assessment and patient
care. The introduction of affordable next generation sequencing (NGS) applications, including multigene panels and whole exome/genome analysis, is ushering a wealth of data on both rare and common
genetic variants into the arena of clinical medicine. The applications are rapidly changing the landscape
of personalized cancer risk assessment, treatment, and preventive care.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of this educational activity, participants should be able to:
• Review basic concepts in genetics, genomics, and next generation sequencing (NGS) technologies
• Explore the benefits and limitations of applying NGS information to clinical genetic/genomic
cancer risk assessment practice
• Recognize the impact of current advances in somatic genomics and pharmacogenomics on
oncology practice
• Discuss strategies for appropriate selection of NGS tests, and interpretation and communication
of NGS information into personalized patient care as well as diffusion of technology and
knowledge on a global scale
• Provide a forum to bring together national and international academic and community clinicians
researchers to foster collaborations, emphasizing opportunities for cancer epidemiology cohort
studies
• Enable young investigators to participate as conference faculty and to generate ideas for
clinical, basic science, and translational research in genomics for implantation in patient care
