Altadena Station is the oldest patrol station in the Department, but the current building is actually the third location to serve the citizens of Altadena. The first Altadena Station opened in 1927 at the southeast corner of Foothill Boulevard (now Altadena Drive) and Lake Avenue. At the grand opening ceremony, Captain Vincent J. Monteleone and his deputies posed for the press holding shotguns and 2,000 citizens, dignitaries, and deputies from other units were in attendance to witness the event. Three years later, a new Station opened two blocks away at Lake Avenue and Mariposa Street. The third station opened on May 18, 1949 at the current 780 E. Altadena Drive location and contained its own jail as well as supporting facilities. Later minor expansions included the acquisition of a building from the County Engineers that became the Station locker room, and an expansion of the west end of the Station in 1961 to provide needed office space. The most recent upgrades that began in May of 2010 were the most comprehensive since the Station opened. The personnel who were displaced during the remodeling project are extremely appreciative of the new Station, especially the desk personnel who served for almost a year in the former Altadena command post trailer. The real winners, however, are the citizens of Altadena who now have a thoroughly modern station to meet their needs for years to come. The large-scale permanent Dinosaur Hall rivals the world’s leading dinosaur experiences with the volume of individual fossils displayed; the size and extraordinariness of the major mounts, including the world’s only Tyrannosaurus Rex growth series (a baby, juvenile, and adult); and the transparent treatment of the science that surrounds these creatures as a vibrant, ongoing investigation of mysteries solved and still unsolved. The exhibition features over 300 fossils, 20 fully articulated skeletons, physical and digital interactives, and video. In addition to the T. Rex series, the exhibition’s standouts include an imposing, never-before mounted Triceratops, a Mamenchisaurus with its 68-foot long neck, and giant reptiles that lived in the oceans covering what is today California. The Dinosaur Hall displays bring visitors closer than ever, allowing multiple vantage points, from above and below as well as alongside the specimens. 8 Become a Member of the Natural History Family of Museums Today! The Benefits of Reducing Salt in Your Diet The U.S. Government’s Dietary Guidelines for Americans currently recommends that you should not consume more than 2,300 milligrams of sodium per day, or 1,500 milligrams for certain groups such as older adults and people with high blood pressure. However, the average LA County resident consumes more than double the recommended daily amount of sodium. Excessive sodium consumption is a growing public health concern as over time, the excess salt can cause high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke. View our “Salt Shocker” video series at www.youtube.com/lapublichealth which reveals common foods and ingredients, such as cottage cheese and ketchup, that many wouldn’t suspect to have excess salt. Tips to Reduce Your Sodium Consumption • Eat more fresh foods and fewer processed foods. • Choose low-sodium and no-salt added varieties of products. • Remove salt from recipes whenever possible and limit use of sodium-heavy condiments. • Use herbs, spices, and other flavorings to enhance foods. Take this quiz and find out how your pet’s health affects your health! Prepare Your Animals For an Emergency or Disaster! The DACC encourages all pet owners to take steps to be ready for emergencies, which can strike at any time. Pet owners may not be aware of the ways that animal and human health are connected. Pets can develop some of the same problems as their owners. Many health problems that affect dogs and cats are avoidable through proper care and maintenance. By preventing certain dog and cat health problems, we can also help prevent these problems in people. Have a Plan. One of the most important components of emergency preparedness is having a plan in place for you and your family. The same goes for your pets! Make arrangements now with family or friends who would be willing to welcome your pets in the event of an emergency, and make plans with your neighbors to care for or evacuate your pets if you are unable to do so. Each pet should have its own crate/carrier that has good air circulation and is large enough to allow your pet to stand, turn, and lie down. LA County Community Development Commission (CDC) If you have horses or other livestock, be sure to make evacuation arrangements or prepare an area where they can remain safe during an emergency. It is vital for horses to be evacuated early from threatened areas so horse trailers do not interfere with emergency response vehicles. DACC encourages you to have a working trailer available and train your horse to load into a trailer. If your horse will not load easily or safely, work in advance to make your horse’s area as safe as possible to take shelter. Check with your local Fire Department for clearance regulations. Learn what you can do to keep yourself and your pets healthy by taking a short Pet Health and Safety Quiz at www.publichealth.lacounty.gov/vet. Single-Family Grant Program This CDC program helps qualified low-income individuals or families who own a single-family home or mobile home within the unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County. Did you know that you can dial 2-1-1 to access information for emergency food and shelter, senior services, childcare, employment resources, low-cost health care, alcohol and drug-related support, volunteer opportunities, and an array of municipal services, including code enforcement at no cost to you. The 2-1-1 information service is provided in many languages. 2-11 is operated 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The information you provide to the resource advisors is confidential. If you are unable to access 2-1-1 directly, please call (800) 339-6993 or visit the 2-1-1 LA County website at www.211LA.org. NOTE: In case of an emergency, you still must dial 9-1-1. Enriching Lives Have an emergency kit for your pets. Make sure to include food and water (at least three days worth for each pet) and any necessary medications. Dogs should wear a collar with license and identification information. Be sure to have extra collars and leashes with ID tags for cats and dogs. Have a copy of all of your pet’s important information (registration, microchip, vaccination, and other important medical records). Also include familiar items, such as favorite toys and treats, which can help reduce stress for your pets during a disaster.
