MIAMI CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL CLIENT SUCCESS STORY “Leadership development is 100 percent critical to our success and strategy. We need leaders at all levels of the organization who are innovative and agile. Our partnership with Harvard Business Publishing is helping us fulfill this need.” Narendra Kini, MD, President & CEO, Miami Children’s Hospital Developing Agile Leaders to Handle the Fast Pace of Change and Innovation in Today’s Medical World With programs routinely ranked among those of the United States’ best children’s hospitals, and increasingly attracting patients from around the globe, Miami Children’s looks to become one of the premier pediatric medical facilities in the world. To realize this goal, the hospital recognized that it needed to have a high-quality organizational infrastructure in place. This meant developing leaders able to handle the rapid change and continual innovation that are the hallmarks of modern medicine. Growing Leaders from Within It also meant grooming leaders with the agility, flexibility, and management know-how to take on a range of different organizational roles. Given the high demand for skilled professionals in the health care industry, Miami Children’s knew that it would have to grow leaders from within. To do so, the hospital created a range of learning opportunities— stand-up classes, blended learning, and self-paced courses—that it makes available to 200 senior managers in all nonphysician facets of hospital operations, from the executive suite to nursing operations to management of its six satellite clinics. continued » UNITED STATES | EUROPE | INDIA > For more information, visit: www.harvardbusiness.org AT A G L A N C E BUSINESS CHALLENGE Achieving global recognition as a leading pediatric health care provider amid rapid growth and a skilled employee shortage AUDIENCE Two hundred leaders as well as other high-potential employees OFFERINGS AND SERVICES USED Harvard ManageMentor® v11 IMPACT > 1 00% of those eligible have tapped Harvard ManageMentor. >P articipants acquired best-practice leadership strategies. >P articipants experienced at least one behavior change. Harvard ManageMentor is a powerful resource on both fronts.” Rula Sater, Manager, Organizational Development and Training Meeting Strategic Goals with Leadership Fundamentals Miami Children’s strategic leadership development is provided through Leadership Fundamentals, which is based on content from Harvard ManageMentor and discussions with in-house experts on various topics. The program’s goal is to build business and financial acumen among managers and high-potential employees so that they can bring new thinking to their current jobs and are positioned to take on new roles throughout the organization. The hospital wants leaders capable of walking into different departments—the emergency room, the cafeteria, environmental services—and running them. The hospital also incorporates Leadership Fundamentals in its Emerging Leaders Program, an initiative with a more formal structure than the selfdirected general approach of the general program. Participants meet biweekly to review and expand on the two online modules they have completed during the prior two-week period. During these in-person meetings, the goal is always to bring things back to direct application of the learning to the participants’ roles. The program also incorporates stretch assignments; networking, mentoring, and peer-topeer opportunities; and board presentations. Managing Your Own Learning Harvard ManageMentor was chosen because it is comprehensive and challenging and offers engaging multimedia content. It’s also important that participants can take advantage of program resources whether they have concentrated periods to devote to learning, or small windows of opportunity. Users give high marks to Harvard ManageMentor’s “quick paths” to easily access materials they can use right away, such as coaching hints. Having online resources also enables employees working in satellite locations to have access to learning opportunities without having to travel to the hospital’s main campus. Behind the scenes, the leadership development team is taking advantage of the reporting and administrative capabilities that the hosted version of Harvard ManageMentor provides, making Leadership Fundamentals simple to support and maintain.
