Dear Friends, Forty years ago, the Children’s Museum of Denver was founded with a goal of becoming a leader in the field of informal early childhood education. Throughout the years, we have remained committed to this objective and have continued to be a resource for families with young children in Colorado. Fiscal year 2013 was incredibly exciting! The opening of our brand new exhibit, Kinetics!, took the fundamentals of physical science to a whole new level and has become wildly popular among the young Einsteins and Newtons that visit us each day. This past summer, we were honored by 5280 Magazine’s Top of the Town as Best Museum of 2013. Our education programming continued to evolve, addressing specific educational outcomes and allowing our visitors to explore their world through creativity, experimentation and discovery. And, once again, we ended our fiscal year with record-breaking attendance and are serving more visitors than ever. In reaching this four-decade milestone and celebrating a fantastic year, we are incredibly grateful for the ongoing support of our community. The success of our past has positioned us for an exciting future and we look forward to inspiring the next generation of Colorado’s young learners. Sincerely, Lauren Arnold Board Chair Mike Yankovich President and CEO Milestones Fiscal year 2013 was an outstanding year for the Children’s Museum of Denver. We: •Were honored to be named Best Museum in 5280 Magazine’s annual Top of the Town issue. •Experienced record-breaking attendance for the seventh year in a row, serving more than 348,000 children and grown-ups. •Continued to provide over 16,000 free admissions, bus transportation and memberships to children from low-income elementary schools and childcare centers through our Sponsored Admissions and Memberships Program. •Welcomed 5,163 Head Start children and their families through the city of Denver’s 5 By 5 Program, which introduces participants to leading cultural facilities free of charge. •Offered private play experiences for children with disabilities through our family access nights and low-sensory mornings. •Opened our doors free to the public the first Tuesday of each month, welcoming more than 14,000 children and their caregivers, thanks to the generosity of Target Corporation. •Completed the tenth year of the Museum’s G.R.O.W (Growing Respect by Observing Our World) Science and Literacy Collaborative in partnership with the Denver Botanic Gardens and the Butterfly Pavilion. The program involved 1,500 students from Denver and Adams County Title I schools. •Commemorated our 40th anniversary and raised nearly $290,000 with a decadent Charlie and the Chocolate Factory-themed fundraiser for our annual Birthday Bash, chaired by Meredith Coors and Monica Denler. Kinetics! Exhibit In October 2012, we introduced our young innovators to the laws of motion and the principles of physical science through our brand new exhibit, Kinetics! Developed over an 18-month period by our exhibit and education teams, the Playscape teaches our visitors about the fundamentals of engineering. “Play is the highest form of research.” - Albert Einstein Financial Summary Statement of Activities Support and revenues Gifts & grants - Annual Fund $ 1,705,312 Gifts & grants - Capital Fund $ 1,686,958 Earned revenue $ 2,182,068 Special events revenue* $ 222,709 Investment & misc. income $ (1,028) ––––––––––– Total support and revenues $ 5,796,019 Expenses Program $ 2,640,028 Supporting $ 1,301,455 Loss on asset disposal $ 64,902 ––––––––––– Total expenses $ 4,006,385 Change in net assets Annual Fund $ 135,101 Capital Fund $ 1,654,533 Total change in net assets $ 1,789,634 Net assets at beginning of year $ 5,973,113 ––––––––––– Net assets at end of year $ 7,762,747 *Net of expense Balance Sheet Assets Current assets Restricted cash - Capital Fund Capital Pledges Receivable Investments Property & equipment - net Total assets Liabilities and net assets Liabilities Net assets Unrestricted Temporarily restricted - general Temporarily restricted - capital Total net assets Total net assets & liabilities $ 1,618,617 $ 207,793 $ 1,607,244 $ 1,295,229 $ 3,792,811 ––––––––––– $ 8,521,694 $ 758,947 $ 5,651,036 $ 255,849 $ 1,855,862 ––––––––––– $ 7,762,747 $ 8,521,694 Programs There is no such thing as a boring day at the Children’s Museum of Denver. It’s our job to be early childhood education pioneers and we take it very seriously. Last year we: •Facilitated engaging public programming every single day, all following our bi-monthly themes: Colorful Colorado, Planet Earth, Get Caught Reading, An Apple a Day, Stellar Science and Wide World of Art. •Served 11,594 children through educational outreach programs at elementary schools, preschools and Head Start centers throughout the Denver metropolitan area. •Welcomed 16,407 students to the Museum to participate in educational programming and school field trips. •Developed two new school programs, Kinetic Engineers and Molar Expedition. Both were expertly designed by our education team to extend and enrich classroom curricula and support the new state academic standards. - Rube Goldberg Volunteers Over the past year, 740 individuals volunteered 10,833 hours to support our family and fundraising events, educational programs and behind-thescenes administrative functions. The Children’s Museum of Denver is incredibly fortunate to have such an engaged group supporting our mission. A very special thank you to our dedicated volunteers and volunteer Team Leaders who continue to provide their time, energy and expertise to the Children’s Museum.
