NEW YORK - The timing
couldn't be worse, at least from the
audience's standpoint. With winter
upon us and days at their shortest,
weekday mornings now become
even bleaker. Katie Couric is leaving us until spring.
The expectant "Today" show anchor is, of course, about to start maternity leave. Her final appearance
is today.
But the next evening, we'll get
one "curtain call" before, she vanishes for three months: Couric hosts
a documentary called "Everybody's
Business: America's Children,"
which airs at 8 p.m. EST Saturday
onNBG;
The one-hour show provides a
distressing glimpse of -disadvantaged kids - then displays, case by
case, heartening solutions with remarkable results.
The strategy: . Business-sponsored programs and employee*yol*
unteer efforts rescue young people

them before it's too late; a stitch in
time, you know,
"I think the sentiment in this
country these days is that government can't do everything," Couric
says, "and that it's up to individuals
and private business to get involved
at the local level in solving some of
the nation's problems.
