211 Info & Referral Service
United Ways and the Alliance for
Information and Referral Systems
collaborated so that every American
has access to 211, an easy to
remember phone number used
throughout the US and Canada. It is a
free, confidential information and
referral service. People call 211 for
everything from basic needs like food,
clothing and shelter to legal services,
drug treatment, employment support,
child care, physical/mental health
resources, elder care, services for
persons with disabilities and more.
The call center is multilingual with
TTY capabilities. Anyone living in
the Hudson Valley Region can now
access the 211 system by simply
dialing 2-1-1. The public website is

A coordinating agency for youth
programming, as directed by the
organizational guidelines set forth by
the NYS Office of Children and
Family Services (OCFS). It channels
OCFS and County funding to local
municipalities and community based
organizations, based on the needs in
the Children & Family Services Plan.

way O.C. provides services to
children and youth with mental health
challenges, and their families.

Introduction: 40 Developmental Assets
Why Do Some Kids Grow Up With Ease, While Others Struggle? Why do some kids get involved in
dangerous activities, while others spend their time contributing to society? Why do some youth "beat
the odds" in difficult situations, while others get trapped?
Many factors influence why some young people have successes in life and why others have a harder
time. Economic circumstances, genetics, trauma, and many other factors play a role. But these factors,
which seem difficult, if not impossible, to change-aren't all that matters. Research by Search Institute
has identified 40 concrete, positive experiences and qualities-"developmental assets"-that have a
tremendous influence on young people's lives. And they are things that people from all walks of life
can help to nurture.
Listed below are the 40 developmental assets that youth need to grow up to be competent, caring and
healthy. Helping youth to develop these assets depends primarily on individuals - parents, grandparents,
teachers, neighbors and many others - building positive relationships with children and teenagers.
Nearly all children and adolescents need more developmental assets than they now have. While it is
crucial to pay special attention to those children who have the least economically and emotionally, the
