Children of the Caribbean Foundation
Executive Director’s Letter
This year, Children of the Caribbean Foundation's focus is on children who live with HIV in the
Caribbean.
Children living with HIV in the Caribbean face the toughest battles every single day of their lives.
They not only have to combat the physical effects of the disease, but they also have to deal with
the discrimination and emotional pain that accompanies their condition. These children, the
majority of whom were born HIV positive through no fault of their own, are forced to deal with and
understand the hardships in life way too early in life. They are forced to live with shame, and
experience the brunt of the stigma of being HIV positive.
Approximately three quarters of the 250,000 [190,000 – 320,000] people living with HIV in the
Caribbean are in the two countries of the island of Hispaniola: Dominican Republic and Haiti. But
national adult HIV prevalence is high throughout the region: 1% - 2% in Barbados, Dominican
Republic and Jamaica, and 2% - 4% in the Bahamas, Haiti and Trinidad and Tobago. However,
HIV surveillance in the Caribbean is generally considered inadequate, so these reported trends
are only vague indicators. Both HIV prevalence and AIDS cases are thought to be widely
underestimated in the region.
According to the Leadership Campaign on AIDS [program of the Office of HIV/AIDS Policy]
managed by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, HIV/AIDS infection rates in the
Caribbean are among the highest in the world, second only to those of sub-Saharan Africa.
We have made a commitment to the Cyril Ross Nursery on Trinidad and Tobago to assist its
children by refurbishing and expanding their pharmacy, creating a sick bay room, updating their
library, and fixing structural defects in the physical building, including the roof and bathrooms.
The Cyril Ross Nursery is one of seventeen institutions of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. In 1994 a
decision was made to use the Cyril Ross Nursery building as a home for HIV positive children who
were abandoned at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital. When the home started, three (3)
children (all of whom are still alive) were brought from the hospital, and over the years their
numbers have grown to thirty eight (38). There are children who came in as toddlers who are now
adolescents. The Cyril Ross Nursery is the only home of its kind in the entire Caribbean that
provides for and takes care of children who are HIV positive and/or AIDS infected, both as
residents and out patients.
During the first eight years, seventeen (17) children died. However, with the granting of free
medication by the Government in 2000, there have been no deaths since. Cyril Ross Nursery is
fortunate to have the services of volunteer doctors – Dr. David John and Dr. Nosa Everest OmoIgbinomwanhia.
I had the privilege of visiting the children at Cyril Ross Nursery in July of 2011, and was humbled by
their outlook toward life. They were a happy, optimistic bunch of kids who looked at each day as
a blessing, and appreciated everything provided to them -- from an acknowledging glance to a
big warm hug! I met with the warm manager and staff of the home and the Director/Honorary
Secretary of the St. Vincent de Paul, and learned of some of the difficulties faced by the children
and the institution as well. It is difficult to imagine how an institution such as Cyril Ross Nursery,
being the only one of its kind in the entire Caribbean, can be experiencing the level of financial
hardship that it does.
Keri and Eric Close are dear friends of Julien and mine and are remarkable philanthropists as well.
They have raised money to build schools for children in Africa, and have offered to do the same
for the Cyril Ross Nursery. With the support of my generous board members and our friends, our
goal is not merely to provide the needed assistance to the physical structure of Cyril Ross Nursery,
but to improve the quality of lives of the children in any way that we can. I encourage everyone
to join us in this effort, and to lend your support in whatever way you can.

The Need
Caribbean Children and the Homeless Children in Los Angeles
A large portion of the 420 million people living in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) began the Third
Millennium living under conditions of poverty. Our research has shown that Los Angeles has the largest number
of homeless children in the United States. 40% of all the homeless in Los Angeles are women and children under
age 18.
 Cyril Ross Nursery on the island of Trinidad needed to renovate its facility. There was need for an
expanded and modern pharmacy with adequate storage for medications.
 Youth who graduated High School on the islands of the Caribbean needed financial assistance to pay
for a United States college education.
 Many children across the Caribbean needed school supplies – backpacks, dictionaries, pens, pencils
calculators.
 The CANOAE Foundation needed stringed instruments to run its classical stringed music classes for at-risk
youth from the inner city in Trinidad.
 The homeless children in Los Angeles needed spending money for Christmas.
 The homeless children in Los Angeles needed meals.
 The Los Angeles Hollywood Shelter was in need of a new computer and computer software.

The Work
Children of the Caribbean Foundation helped more children than ever before in the 2012 Financial Year thanks
to the support of donors like you!
From May 2011 through May 2012
Children of the Caribbean Foundation accomplished the following:
 In June 2011, Mr. Damien Rivers from the island of Nevis was the first recipient of the COTC scholarship.
Mr. Damien Rivers pursued studies in Oklahoma at Cameron University. Here is what Mr. Rivers had to
say upon completion of his degree in the Spring of 2012:
“Dear Mrs. Hodge-Adams,
I recently graduated from Cameron University on the 4th of May 2012 and am writing to show my appreciation. I graduated with an
undergrad Degree in Computer Science and minoring in Math.
I would like to say thanks to you and your organization for your scholarship that I received in 2011. I am indeed grateful for your
assistance, for without that financial assistance, I may not have graduated this past spring semester. Thank you, for all you have done
in my educational advancement and I will continue singing praises to your organization for all the good work you guys are doing and
trying to achieve.”
 Over the Summer of 2011, hundreds of children on the islands of Anguilla, Barbados, Dominica,
Grenada, Jamaica, St. Kitts, Nevis, Trinidad, and the U.S. Virgin islands received backpacks filled with
calculators, notebooks, pens, pencils, erasers, dictionaries, rulers and other essential school supplies. The
Foundation expanded its back-to-school initiative to cover over 8 times the number of islands and
children that received school supplies in 2010 when the charity was first launched.
 In December of 2011, Children of the Caribbean Foundation provided the homeless children of the Los
Angeles Youth Network (Hollywood Shelter) with a warm pre-Christmas lunch and $30.00 Visa Gift Cards.
 In January of 2012, Children of the Caribbean Foundation entered into a contract with contractor, Mr.
D. Nigel Marcellin of Trinidad and Tobago, to renovate and upgrade the Cyril Ross Nursery and to
expand and modernize the pharmacy at the home of HIV positive children on the island. This Project is
called “Project Trinidad”.
 In March of 2012, Children of the Caribbean Foundation provided the Los Angeles Youth Network,
Hollywood Shelter with a computer and software.
 In April of 2012, the construction, remodeling and expansion at Cyril Ross /Project Trinidad is completed.
 In April of 2012, Children of the Caribbean Foundation provides 5 violins to Dr. Patricia DardaineRagguet, Executive Director of the CANOAE Foundation – a non-profit organization in Port-of-Spain,
Trinidad that teaches at risk youth in the inner City of Trinidad and Tobago how to play classical
instruments. The program was in need of violins for its stringed orchestra.

The Support
Children of the Caribbean Foundation helped more children in the 2011 - 2012 Financial Year than it imagined
it would have been able to help! In fact, despite the restrictive global financial market, in December of 2011
the Foundation expanded its outreach to include the homeless children in Los Angeles, the city where Children
of the Caribbean Foundation is domiciled. The work of the Foundation was made possible thanks to the
support of donors like you!
