He also writes hundreds of school reports but prefers the longer fiction (he daylights as a primary school teacher). His books have won the WAYRBA Hoffman Award and been short-listed for The Premier’s Book Award. David is father to Ben, Meg, Dan and Joe, and husband to Liz—he likes people with three letter names. His workshops have been described (by people other than himself) as “brilliant”, “entertaining”, “humorous” and “inspirational”. He is one of our all-time favourite presenters. Using games and real-life examples from Spider Lies and her Riddle Gully books, Jen inspires and encourages students in reading and writing. They take away new tools for their writing kit and a clear sense that becoming a writer is achievable. James Foley is a children’s author and illustrator. His latest book, In The Lion, was released by Walker Books in 2012. It’s a little like The Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly, but darkly funny and set in a zoo. Jen Banyard Yrs 3-7 His debut picture book, The Last Viking, was written by Norman Jorgensen and published in 2011 by Fremantle Press. The Last Viking won the 2012 Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators’ Crystal Kite Award, it also won the Hoffman Award in the 2012 WA Young Readers’ Book Awards, given to the highest-ranked book by a WA creator, and a 2012 Children’s Book Council of Australia Junior Judges Award. Her picture book No Bears and chapter book Duck for a Day were both shortlisted for the Children’s Book Council Book of the Year Award and her novel Surface Tension won the 2012 Davitt Award for Crime Writing. She also won the SCBWI Crystal Kite Award in 2013. Meg Caddy is a student of Literature and History at the University of Western Australia. In 2013, her YA fantasy novel Waer was shortlisted for the Text Prize, which led to a contract with Text Publishing. Meg was the 2013 Young WriterIn-Residence at the Katharine Susannah Prichard Writers’ Centre, and has been mentored by fantasy author Juliet Marillier. Meg’s presentations are interactive and entertaining. Sessions are tailored to individual groups and will cover aspects such as getting inspiration from the everyday, growing a story from an idea, the stories behind Meg’s stories and her own writing journey (and for the littlest littlies, perhaps a stuffed animal or two). Meg’s most recent publications are Wreck the Halls and Definitely No Ducks. For the past four years, Meg has been presenting to children of all ages. She is passionate about storytelling, fantasy, and lizards. Musical Sally Murphy wanted to be many things when she grew up – then realised she didn’t want to grow up! So she’s decided to be a big kid for as long as she can get away with it. Sometimes, though, she manages to masquerade as a grown up, which is just as well because when she’s not writing for children she’s a mother of six, teacher and book reviewer. Sally’s books include verse novels Pearl Verses the World and Toppling, picture books Do Not Forget Australia, Meet Mary MacKillop and Head Hog and lots of others – over 35 books and counting. The brand new Book Week musical Worlds Apart. has been created to celebrate the 2014 Children’s Book Week theme ‘Connect to Reading’, combining a love of reading with exciting physical competition. Set in 1918, Do Not Forget Australia tells the story of two boys: Billy, in Melbourne, missing his father who is serving as a soldier in Europe, and Henri living in Villers-Bretonneux, France, a town about to face the full brunt of the war. Pyjama Storytime 0 – 6 years Children from 2 - 5 years of age will embark on a new adventure as Renee from Barking Gecko reads from popular children’s books, inspiring young minds while fostering an early love of reading. This interactive 30 minute workshop includes a story reading, role-play (movement exercise), crafts and music. Each session is free and can accommodate up to 30 children. Parents need to remain with their children at all times and it is recommended that children bring their own cushion/pillow for their comfort while seated. Registration can only be made with Barking Gecko event staff in the Food Court on the day of the Story Time just prior to each session starting.
