Education is a basic right for all children...
Meg’s Children Nepal is an Australian not for profit charitable
trust, established in 2005. Our goal is to support and
enhance the lives of 20 Nepalese children who do not have
family to cater for their basic needs. We also provide shortterm and emergency care for at-risk children.
Since the establishment of the Megs Children trust we
have worked hard and ensured that the children and their
carers are provided with a stable and loving home, that their
needs are met in terms of health and nutrition, and most
importantly that the children receive a good education.
The children will receive ongoing support and training in
whatever path they
choose to follow into
adulthood.
Meg’s Children Nepal
is supported by a
small committee of
dedicated volunteers,
and managed in
Nepal by a small
team of young
and committed
Nepalese carers Bikash, Nanda and
Bibechana.
Importantly, there
are no management
fees or other hidden
charges, so every dollar donated goes directly to support
the children and their carers in Nepal. This money covers
expenses that include rent and utilities, food and school fees,
as well as a stipend paid to the children’s carers. As the
children become older the trust is also covering college fees
and training courses, supporting the children in their chosen
paths.
As a sponsor, the difference you make will mean more
than you think- you will be helping create lasting change in
children’s lives.
Meg
In 2005 Trish Ryan – a nurse and mother of four grown
up children – travelled to Nepal and volunteered in a small
orphanage in Bugmati, on the outskirts of Kathmandu. The
orphanage that Trish found herself in was under corrupt
management, and the 20 children who lived there were
suffering from persistent health problems, mostly related to
malnutrition and poor hygiene. The facilities were extremely
poor, and supplies were frequently inadequate – the staff were
often forced to beg on the streets.
On her return to
Australia Trish called
a public meeting in
her local farming
community, and a
small committee was
formed. Fundraising
activities commenced
almost immediately,
and the committee
established a charitable
trust to support the
children from the
Bugmati orphanage.
Meg’s Children Nepal
was named by our
committed Nepalese
carers in memory of Meg Ryan, Trish Ryan’s oldest daughter
who passed away in 2003 as a result of complications
from Spina Bifida. Meg had always taken a great interest in
education, and had worked as a teacher’s aide at primary
schools in Albury and in Mullengandra. When Meg passed
away at age 23, she was studying for a Bachelor of Education
(Early Childhood and Primary) at Charles Sturt University.
