faces preseason Big West favorite UC Irvine at McKale Center.

Schedule Key
1 - EA Sports Maui Invitational Opening Round (Tucson, Ariz.)
2 - EA Sports Maui Invitational Championship Round (Lahaina, Hawaii)
» The Wildcats have been ranked in 42-straight AP polls, including 22-straight weeks in the top 10 and 20-consecutive
weeks in the top five.
» Earlier this week, Arizona was one of just three schools nationally to place three or more representatives on the
Wooden Award Preseason Top 50, as Brandon Ashely, Rondae Hollis-Jefferson and Stanley Johnson were each
tapped for the list.
» Arizona has 115 victories since the start of the 2010-11 season, the most in the Pac-12 and the 10th-best total
nationally; three of the eight 25-wins seasons posted by Pac-12 teams in Sean Miller’s tenure belong to UA.
» UA is in the midst of a 23-game home winning streak, the fifth-longest in program history; the Wildcats lead the
Pac-12 in homecourt winning percentage since 2010-11 and are 76-11 (.874) at McKale Center under Miller.
» The Wildcats have won 29-consecutive regular-season non-conference games, the longest streak in the nation;
UA’s streak began with a win over Oakland on Dec. 20, 2011.
» Currently ranked fourth nationally in adjusted defensive efficiency (through Nov. 17), UA is in the midst of a 47game streak in which it has not given up more than 75 points, dating to March 2013.
» The Wildcats’ transition defensive has been stifling in their first two games, allowing opponents a total of just four
fastbreak points in those contests.

PAC-12 PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Nov. 17.................................................... Tyrone Wallace (California)
MILLER’S PROCESS PAYING DIVIDENDS IN TUCSON
Arizona head coach Sean Miller stressed the importance of “honoring the process” upon taking the reigns of the UA
program in 2009, and over the last five seasons, that process has paid off in a major way.
Since the start of the 2010-11 campaign, Miller has guided the Wildcats to a 115-33 (.777) record, marking both the most
wins and the best winning percentage in the Pac-12 over that time. Arizona has captured two regular-season conference
titles, made three Sweet 16s and advanced to two Elite Eights during that time frame, as well.
Miller’s 2010-11 and 2013-14 Arizona squads are the only Pac-12 teams to reach 30 wins or advance to the Elite Eight since
the beginning of the 2010-11 season. UA was also the first Pac-12 team to attain the No. 1 ranking in the Associated Press
poll since January 2006, doing so for eight-straight weeks during the 2013-14 campaign.
Since 2009, Miller has also signed 19 recruits ranked in the top 100 of ESPN RecruitingNation’s individual charts - the
second-most in the nation over that span. UA and Kentucky are the only schools in the nation to pull in four-straight top-10
recruiting classes from 2011-14.
WILDCATS PICKED TO DEFEND PAC-12 CROWN
For the third-consecutive year, the league’s media contingent has picked Arizona as the favorite to claim the regularseason Pac-12 championship. UA received 31 of a possible 32 first-place votes to rank ahead of second-place Utah and
third-place Colorado in the preseason poll.
In the previous 12 times the Wildcats have been tabbed the preseason conference favotite, they have gone on to win the
title on eight occasions.
UA PLACES THREE ON WOODEN AWARD PRESEASON TOP 50
Brandon Ashley, Rondae Hollis-Jefferson and Stanley Johnson all represent the University of Arizona men’s basketball
program on the John R. Wooden Award Preseason Top 50, released Nov. 17 by the Los Angeles Athletic Club.
Arizona, Kansas and Kentucky are the only schools to place three or more representatives on the list, while the Wildcats
had three of the Pac-12’s seven honorees. Ashley, Hollis-Jefferson and Johnson were each McDonald’s All-Americans prior
to arriving at UA.
On Nov. 4, T.J. McConnell was named to the 36-player watch list for the Bob Cousy Collegiate Point Guard of the Year Award.
ARIZONA AMONG NATION’S WINNINGEST PROGRAMS OVER LAST FOUR YEARS
While Sean Miller and Co. arrived in Tucson for the 2009-10 season, the 2010-11 campaign effectively marks the beginning
of the Miller Era. Four years ago, the Wildcats claimed their first conference championship under Miller and made a run to
the Elite Eight that only ended at the hands of eventual national champion Connecticut.
A winning culture has been restored at Arizona, and over the last four years, few nationally have been better at winning
than Miller’s Wildcats.

ARIZONA WORKING ON LENGTHY HOME WINNING STREAK
Arizona was 18-0 at home in 2013-14, marking the program’s second unblemished home slate
under head coach Sean Miller and the 11th in the history of McKale Center. UA is 76-11 (.874) at
McKale Center with Miller at the helm.
The Wildcats’ current 23-game home winning streak is the fifth-longest in program history. UA’s

WILDCATS TOP PAC-12 IN HOMECOURT WINNING PERCENTAGE OVER
LAST FOUR YEARS
Since the start of the 2010-11 season, Arizona has a 65-6 record at McKale Center, translating to a
Pac-12-best .915 home winning percentage.
That timeframe includes two undefeated home seasons: 17-0 in 2010-11 and 18-0 in 2013-14.
Prior to the Wildcats’ first unblemished home season under Sean Miller in 2010-11, UA hadn’t
gone unbeaten at home since the 1998-99 campaign.

UA RANKED FIRST NATIONALLY IN ADJUSTED DEFENSIVE EFFICIENCY
IN 2013-14
Not surprisingly, given Sean Miller’s defense-oriented identity as a head coach, Arizona improved
its adjusted defensive efficiency in each of Miller’s first five seasons in Tucson.
Bolstered by a defensive effort that ranked fourth nationally in field goal percentage defensive
and sixth in scoring defense, while holding 30 of 38 opponents to 65 points or fewer, UA ranked
first nationally in adjusted defense in 2013-14.
In Pac-12 play, the 2013-14 Wildcats held opponents to 0.91 points per possession, making them
the lone Pac-12 team to hold its conference opponents below the 1.00-point mark per trip.

UA AMONG NATION’S ELITE IN SCORING DEFENSE IN 2013-14
In addition to leading the country in adjusted defensive efficiency last season, Arizona also
ranked sixth nationally in scoring defense in 2013-14, yielding just 58.6 points per game to also
lead the Pac-12.
Since UA joined the league in 1978, no Arizona team had ever led the Pac-12 in scoring defense.
The Wildcats’ average of 58.6 points allowed per game was also their best since joining the
conference, and the top mark for the program since averaging 55.3 points allowed per game
during the 1950-51 season.
Arizona is currently riding a streak of 47-consecutive games without giving up more than 75
points, dating to March 2, 2013.

DEFENSIVE REBOUNDING AN ARIZONA FORTÉ
In each of the last two seasons, Arizona has ranked among the national leaders in defensive rebound
percentage.
Arizona cleared the defensive glass at an elite rate in 2012-13, ripping down 73.3 percent of available
defensive rebounds to tie for seventh nationally and rank first among schools in the major conferences.
Arizona corralled nearly three of every four defensive rebounds available in 2013-14, checking in with a .727
defensive rebound percentage to rank 13th nationally and third among teams from major conferences.
REBOUND MARGIN LEADS TO WILDCAT WINS
Arizona is 2-0 (1.000) this season and is 98-20 (.831) under head coach Sean Miller when it holds an edge in
the rebound column.
The Wildcats ranked ninth nationally in 2013-14 with a +7.1 average rebound margin after ranking 19th in
that category in 2012-13.
The Wildcats’ +7.1 rebound margin last season was the second-best by a Sean Miller-coached team, and the
top mark of his tenure at Arizona.

ARIZONA PUNISHED OPPONENTS IN THE PAINT IN 2013-14
Whether through dribble penetration or getting the ball to its bigs on the block, Arizona powered its way
to an average margin of +10.8 points in the paint in 2013-14. The Wildcats averaged 33.8 points per game in
the paint, translating to 46.4 percent of its total points on the season.
The frontcourt quartet of Aaron Gordon, Brandon Ashley, Kaleb Tarczewski and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson
combined to shoot 51.8 percent (531-of-1,026) overall and 53.9 percent (502-of-932) from two-point
territory.
Arizona threw down 180 dunks in 38 games (4.7/game), with Tarczewski (53) and Gordon (59) combining
for 60.6 percent of that total.
Conversely, UA clamped down on opponents inside the arc, allowing them to shoot just 40.2 percent from
two-point range to rank second nationally. The Wildcats also led the nation with a 42.3 effective field goal
percentage defense in 2013-14.
WILDCATS THRIVED ON SECOND-CHANCE POINTS IN 2013-14
Arizona head coach Sean Miller and his staff always place high priority on crashing the offensive glass, and
in 2013-14, that emphasis translated into a significant advantage for the Wildcats.
UA turned its Pac-12-best average of 12.2 offensive rebounds into 11.8 points per game, outscoring its
opponents by an average of +3.8 points on second-shot opportunities. More than 16 percent of Arizona’s
total points in 2013-14 were second-chance points with each of UA’s top four frontcourt players averaging
at least 1.9 offensive rebounds per game.
WILDCATS LOOK TO ONCE AGAIN FEATURE BALANCED SCORING ATTACK
Noted as one of the nation’s most balanced scoring teams throughout last season, Arizona had a gap of just
9.6 points per game between its leading scorer and its No. 7 scorer in 2013-14. That number could shrink in
2014-15, as the Wildcats are noted to be deeper than any other UA team in Miller’s tenure
Nick Johnson led UA in scoring at 16.3 points per game in 2013-14, while Gabe York checked in seventh
at 6.7 per outing. Arizona had at least four players reach double figures in 24 games last season, including
eight games with five or more double-digit scorers.
MCCONNELL AMONG PAC-12 ASSIST LEADERS AFTER JUST ONE YEAR
In his first year on the court in the Pac-12, T.J. McConnell handed out 202 assists, good for sixth on Arizona’s
single-season chart.
His current total of 217 is fourth among active Pac-12 players despite the fact that McConnell has played
only 40 games at a Pac-12 institution.
McConnell boasted a 3.0 assist-to-turnover ratio in 2013-14, leading the Pac-12 and ranking second on UA’s
single-season list.

2013-14 with a 1.48 ATR that also marked the best in the Sean Miller Era.
UA CAREER SCORING
UA’s 10.2 turnover average was the best in program history, eclipsing the mark of 10.5 set in 1985-86. Arizona averaged just 8.4
turnovers in its last seven games of 2013-14, and just 8.0 per game during the 2014 NCAA Tournament.

DEFENSIVE PRESSURE PRODUCES RESULTS FOR MCCONNELL
Having played two seasons at Duquesne, senior guard T.J. McConnell doesn’t show up on the list of the Pac-12’s active steal
leaders despite the fact that his 247-career thefts are more than double the league’s top active total (118).
McConnell piled up a team-high 64 steals in 2013-14, good enough to rank fourth in the Pac-12 with an average of 1.7 per game.
Had McConnell played his entire career at Arizona, he would have entered his senior season in second place on the program’s
career steals list, just five shy of breaking Jason Terry’s career program record of 245.
HOLLIS-JEFFERSON SHOWS A KNACK FOR GETTING TO THE LINE
A high-energy catalyst off the bench for most of the 2013-14 season, Rondae Hollis-Jefferson posted a team-best average of 6.4
minutes played per free throw attempt last season despite playing the fifth-most minutes on the team.
Hollis-Jefferson, whose 151 free throw attempts last season were the second-most of any Pac-12 freshman, ranks seventh among
returning Pac-12 players in minutes played per free throw attempt in 2013-14 (min. 100 attempts). He and Oregon’s Elgin Cook
are the only two players on the list who didn’t start the majority of their teams’ games last season.
Hollis-Jefferson shot 68.2 percent from the line as a freshman, coming on late in the year with a with a conversion rate of 84.4
percent during postseason play.

ASHLEY’S IMPACT ON THE GLASS AN OVERLOOKED PART OF HIS GAME
Much of the analysis after Brandon Ashley’s foot injury last season focused on what Arizona would do on the offensive end of the
floor, overlooking the integral contributions the San Francisco native made in the rebounding department.
Both with and without Ashley, Arizona was one of the nation’s premier rebounding teams in 2013-14. However, with Ashley in the
lineup, UA posted a +9.5 rebounding margin; without his presence, the Wildcats’ edge on the glass dipped to +3.7. UA went from
yielding just 29.5 opponent rebounds per game with Ashley to 33.3 with him on the bench.
Ashley has a career average of 5.5 rebounds per game, including a clip of 1.7 per game on the offensive glass. Nearly a third of his
career rebounds (102-of-322) have come on the offensive boards.
TARCZEWSKI AN UNSUNG PRESENCE ON OFFENSIVE END
After leading Arizona in rebounding as a freshman and ranking second on the team in that category as a sophomore, Kaleb
Tarczewski developed a reputation as a glass cleaner and defensive presence.
The junior has also quietly established himself as a factor on the offensive end of the floor, as evidenced by the fact that UA is 24-5
(.828) during Tarczewski’s tenure when he scores in double figures.
Tarczewski has proven to be ultra-efficient in his 29-career double-figure scoring games, shooting 63.2 percent from the floor
(122-193) and averaging just 6.7 field goal attempts in those contests.
WILDCATS CONTINUE TO BUILD ON RANKINGS STREAK
The Wildcats have been ranked in 42-consecutive AP polls and 44-straight coaches polls. Since the start of the 2012-13 season,
Arizona has spent 35 weeks ranked in the top 10 of the AP poll.
UA took over the No. 1 ranking in the Dec. 9, 2013, AP poll, marking its first top ranking since 2003 and the first time a Pac-12 team
had garnered the top spot since 2006. The Wildcats held the top spot for a program-record eight-straight weeks.
Arizona was one of just 11 programs in the nation to appear in all 20 Associated Press polls in 2012-13, and one of just eight
programs nationally to do so in 2013-14. UA was the nation’s lone team to be ranked in the top 10 of every AP poll during the
2013-14 season.
Only seven schools - Arizona, Duke, Florida, Kansas, Louisville, Michigan State and Syracuse - have been ranked in every AP poll
over the last two-plus seasons.

WILDCATS NOT AFRAID TO HEAD AWAY FROM MCKALE
Since Sean Miller took over the reigns of the Arizona program in 2009-10, Arizona has compiled a 32-23
(.582) record in true road games, averaging 6.4 true road wins per season in his tenure.
UA’s 32 total road wins are the most in the league over that span, and its 25 Pac-12 road victories are also
the most in the league over the last five years.

ARIZONA NO STRANGER TO SUCCESS AGAINST MAJOR CONFERENCES
UNDER MILLER
Arizona has played 23 non-conference games against teams from the other power conferences under
head coach Sean Miller, going 14-9 (.609) in those contests. The Wildcats’ best mark against another power
league is its 7-0 mark against the ACC, including its win over Duke in the final of the 2013 NIT Season TipOff.

UA ATTRACTING TOP TALENT FROM STATE OF CALIFORNIA
Upon arrival in Tucson in 2009, Sean Miller and his staff made a priority out of establishing relationships in
the talent-rich state of California. A look at players from the state who are either currently on the UA roster
or have been in the last few years is evidence of their success in that endeavor.
The last four Mr. Basketball winners in California either wore or are currently wearing Arizona uniforms:
Ryan Anderson (2011), Aaron Gordon (2012, 2013) and Stanley Johnson (2014).
In addition three of the last four Gatorade California Player of the Year honorees either played or currently
play for UA in Anderson (2011), Grant Jerrett (2012) and Stanley Johnson (2014).
RECRUITING EFFORTS PAYING OFF IN A BIG WAY
In each of the last four years, Arizona head coach Sean Miller and his coaching staff have worked diligently
to land recruiting classes that ranked in the top 10 nationally. Having done so, UA is one of only two schools
in the nation to boast four-consecutive top-10 recruiting classes, along with Kentucky.
The Wildcats’ class was ranked seventh nationally in 2011, third in 2012, fifth in 2013 and seventh in 2014.
Since 2009, Arizona ranks second nationally with 19 ESPN Top 100 signees, and ranks fourth nationally in
that span with eight signees ranked in the ESPN Top 25.
CONTINUING A WINNING TRADITION
At Arizona, winning isn’t simply expected - it’s part of the program’s culture. Since the 1984-85 campaign,
the Wildcats have strung together a Pac-12-best 30-consecutive on-court winning seasons.
Over that same time span, UA is tied for fourth nationally in terms of 20-win seasons with 27 such
performances. The Wildcats have won an average of more than 25 games per season during that time.

UA HAS LEAGUE’S MOST 25-WIN SEASONS SINCE MILLER’S ARRIVAL
Arizona’s win at Colorado on Feb. 22, 2013, was its 25th of the 2013-14 season, marking the third time in
head coach Sean Miller’s tenure that the Wildcats reached the 25-win mark.
In that same timeframe, the rest of the Pac-12 has combined to produce just five 25-win campaigns. Miller’s
2010-11 and 2013-14 Arizona squads are the lone Pac-12 teams to win 30 games since he arrived in Tucson
to start the 2009-10 season.

UA AMONG LARGEST PRODUCERS OF NBA TALENT
ARIZONA CONTINUES TO LEAVE MARK ON USA BASKETBALL
Head coach Sean Miller and freshman forward Stanley Johnson became the latest Wildcats to leave an Arizona stamp
on USA Basketball in the summer of 2014, leading the U.S. to gold at the FIBA Americas U18 Championship in Colorado
Springs.
Johnson led Team USA with averages of 14.0 points and 2.2 steals per game on his way to tournament MVP honors. The
win marked Johnson’s third gold medal with USA Basketball, and Miller’s second (1991 World University Games).
The duo’s success added to an Arizona legacy with the national program that saw Andre Iguodala help the U.S. capture
gold medals at both the 2010 FIBA World Championship and the 2012 London Olympics. Iguodala’s record in a USA
uniform is a spotless 17-0.
Former UA standout Richard Jefferson claimed a bronze medal with Team USA at the 2004 Athens Olympics.

WILDCATS CONTINUE TO BE LEAGUE’S BIGGEST DRAW, EVEN AWAY FROM HOME
Aside from the fact that Arizona’s average home attendance is more than 4,000 fans higher than the next Pac-12 school,
the Wildcats continue to be the league’s biggest draw when they play on the road.
Average attendance at Pac-12 schools increased by an average of 30 percent in 2013-14 when Arizona came to town,
including an increase of more than 60 percent at one league opponent’s venue.
The Wildcats averaged 14,375 fans per home game in 2013-14, equating to a 99 percent capacity of McKale Center for the
season.
KERRS PLEDGE $1 MILLION FOR ATHLETICS
University of Arizona alums Steve and Margot Kerr have committed $1 million to the University of Arizona to assist with the
McKale Center renovation and future academic facility enhancements.
Currently in his first season as head coach of the Golden State Warriors, Kerr won five NBA championships in his 15-year
playing career and retired as the league’s career leader in three-point field goal percentage. A member of UA’s first Final
Four team in 1988, Kerr’s jersey is one of just four that has been retired by the Arizona men’s basketball program.
The Kerrs’ gift joins the $6 million lead gift from Cole and Jeannie Davis and a $1 million gift from George Kalil, as well as a
number of additional donations in support of McKale’s Phase I renovation.
As a result of their gift, the Kerrs join 42 percent of men’s basketball letterwinners and nearly 30 percent of all alumni
letterwinners who have given back to Arizona Athletics at one point in their life.
2014 SIGNING CLASS
Head coach Sean Miller and the Arizona men’s basketball staff
saw their continued efforts to build a successful future for A
Player’s Program come to fruition once again with the signing
one of the nation’s top-ranked recruiting classes.

WILDCATS’ NEW-LOOK UNIFORMS PAY TRIBUTE TO PROGRAM’S STORIED PAST
Following a 2013-14 season that was one of the best in the program’s storied history, the 2014-15 Wildcats wear a new look
built from that great tradition, as the program and Nike collaborated on a new uniform concept for the upcoming season.
The Nike Elite Fit 2.0 jerseys, which feature the team’s existing cactus-based aerographic over the entire back, are
durable and breathable for sweat management while also maximizing range of motion with articulated armholes. Use of
innovative technology has led to a 66 percent weight reduction in the shorts, as well as the ability to dry 30 percent faster
than comparable shorts.
The side paneling and trim of the new uniforms pay tribute to the uniforms the Wildcats wore for roughly a decade
beginning in the mid-1990’s, a period that cemented Arizona’s place among the nation’s elite college basketball programs.
That period of time was one of the most prosperous in UA history, resulting in the 1997 national championship, a national
runner-up finish in 2001, four regular-season Pac-10 championships and a conference tournament title.
ARIZONA, UCONN AGREE TO HOME-AND-HOME SERIES
Arizona’s non-conference schedules under head coach Sean Miller have been some of the nation’s most challenging, and
that trend stands to continue after the Wildcats agreed to a home-and-home series with fellow college basketball power
Connecticut that starts in 2017.
UA will host the Huskies at McKale Center in December 2017 and will make the return trip to Connecticut in December
2018. Arizona and UConn have faced each other five times on the hardwood, last meeting in an Elite Eight matchup in
Anaheim in 2011.

of the 2016 Armed Forces Classic.
» Named an honorable mention Junior All-American by
MaxPreps in 2014
» A first-team Division II all-state and all-state underclass
honoree by Cal-Hi Sports in 2014
Miller on Simon: “Justin is the ultimate versatile player in
that he can play, and defend, as many as three positions.
His disposition and length give him a chance to be a special
defensive player. He’s an exceptional passer who has a great
feel for making his teammates better, and he fits our style of
play in a number of different areas.”
RAY SMITH
Forward // 6-6 // 180 // Las Vegas, Nev. (Las Vegas)
» Rated as the No. 24 overall recruit and No. 5 small forward
in his class by ESPN
» A 2014 honorable mention MaxPreps Junior All-American
» Garnered first-team all-state honors and shared Northeast
League MVP honors as a junior
Miller on Smith: “Ray was hit with a setback when he tore
his ACL in July. If there’s a gift to that happening, it’s when it
happened. He has a great chance to be 100 percent by the
time school begins for him as a freshman at Arizona. Ray is
a terrific athlete who can really get up and down the floor.
He has the size you want as a small forward and he can really
pass, shoot and dribble.”
ALLONZO TRIER
Guard // 6-5 // 190 // Seattle, Wash. (Findlay Prep)
» Ranked as the No. 17 prospect and No. 3 shooting guard
in his class by ESPN
» Teamed with UA head coach Sean Miller and current
freshman Stanley Johnson to help lead the U.S. to a gold
medal at the 2014 FIBA Americas U18 Championship
» A MaxPreps Junior All-American and the Gatorade
Maryland Player of the Year as a junior in 2013-14
Miller on Trier: “I know Allonzo well, having been one of his
coaches last summer with USA Basketball. He has a natural
way of scoring that’s striking as a coach. He gets to the foul
line as well as anyone I’ve seen at his age, and he has a
physicality to his game that makes him incredibly efficient.
He’s a very good passer and can play more than one position.
He has a bright future ahead of him.”
Set for Veteran’s Day 2016, the matchup between Arizona and Michigan State will take place just under a month away
from the 75th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. The matchup between UA and MSU at Joint Base Pearl HarborHickam will be the seventh between the schools, and second-straight in Hawaii after last meeting in the 2005 EA Sports
Maui Invitational.
WILDCATS NAB SECOND SI COVER IN EIGHT MONTHS

Arizona head coach Sean Miller hasn’t wasted time making a dent in the program’s career list for coaching wins, claiming
131 victories in five-plus seasons in Tucson. His average of 25.8 wins per season is the best mark in program history among
coaches with at least four seasons at UA.
Miller is currently six wins shy of surpassing Bruce Larson (1961-72) for fourth place on UA’s career coaching wins chart.
MILLER ADDS SECOND GOLD MEDAL TO HIS INTERNATIONAL BASKETBALL RESUME
Head coach Sean Miller ventured back into the international basketball arena in the summer of 2014 as an assistant coach
with the U.S. U18 National Team, helping the team capture a gold medal at the FIBA Americas Championship in Colorado
Springs.
The gold medal was Miller’s second as a member of the USA Basketball program, as he won one as a player at the 1991 World
University Games in England.
A rising figure in the national team program, Miller served as a court coach for Team USA at the 2011 U.S. World University
Games Team trials.
MILLER ELECTED TO NABC BOARDS OF DIRECTORS
Long considered one of the bright young coaches in the game, UA head coach Sean Miller was elected to the National
Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) board of directors in June.
The NABC has nearly 5,000 members consisting primarily of university and college men’s basketball coaches. All members
of the NABC are expected to uphold the core values of being a Guardian of the Game by bringing attention to the positive
aspects of the sport of basketball and the role coaches play in the academic and athletic lives of today’s student-athletes. The
four core values of being a Guardian of the Game are advocacy, leadership, service and education.
MILLER AMONG NATION’S ELITE AT ADVANCING IN NCAA TOURNAMENT
Head coach Sean Miller directed Arizona to its 16th Sweet 16 appearance in 2014, marking the program’s second in a row
and third in four years.
Since 2008, Miller is one of five coaches nationally to lead a team to five or more Sweet 16 berths.

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Freshman Stanley Johnson scored 17 points, Rondae HollisJefferson added 14 and No. 2 Arizona rolled to an 86-68 win over Cal State Northridge
on Sunday night.
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Brandon Ashley scored a career-high 21 points in his return to
the lineup, and No. 2 Arizona shook off a shaky start to open the season with a 78-55
win over Mount St. Mary’s Friday night.
Arizona (2-0) got off to a shaky start and struggled from the perimeter in its opener
against Mount St. Mary’s on Friday before pulling away.
Arizona was out of sorts early before closing the first half with a big run to build a
15-point lead that was barely challenged.
The Wildcats had few problems against Northridge (1-1), building a big early lead and
cruising to their 23rd straight home win.
Ashley played confidently and moved freely, finishing 9 of 10 from the floor in his
return from missing the final 16 games last season with a broken foot.
Hollis-Jefferson gave Arizona a lift off the bench for the second straight game,
scrapping for loose balls and rebounds while making a variety of acrobatic shots in
the lane.
Rondae Hollis-Jefferson lifted the Wildcats out of their funk with harassing defense
and an array of soaring dunks, finishing with 15 points.
An NCAA Tournament team a year ago, Mount St. Mary’s managed to keep Arizona
within reach for most of the first half. Once the bigger, more athletic Wildcats turned
up the pressure, the Mountaineers couldn’t keep up.
Kristijan Krajina led Mount St. Mary’s with 13 points and Byron Ashe added 12.
The Wildcats entered the season with lofty expectations, even for a storied program
like theirs.
Arizona returned five key players from a team that fell a few seconds short of the
Final Four last season and coach Sean Miller added another stellar recruiting class,
headed by Stanley Johnson.
But before the Wildcats could start their expected romp through the schedule, Miller
issued a warning: The preseason hype may have been overhyped, at least for now.
Citing a lack of cohesiveness and depth, along with an ‘’identity crisis’’ on defense,
Miller said the Wildcats were nowhere near the airy preseason predictions.
Early on against Mount St. Mary’s, it seemed to be onto something as Arizona looked
a bit disjointed on offense, struggling with turnovers - five in the first six minutes - and
getting good looks at the basket.
And, after needing 4 1-2 minutes to get its first field goal, Mount St. Mary’s started
hitting a few shots and was still within 28-25 late in the first half.
Then Arizona hit the accelerator.
Running off three straight steals and breakaway dunks in 45 seconds - HollisJefferson’s tomahawk was particularly nice - the Wildcats closed the first half with
a 12-0 run to lead 40-25.
Mount St. Mary’s had one more run in it, using a 6-0 spurt to pull within seven.
Arizona erased that hope quickly, using a 12-0 run to push the lead to 63-44 before
cruising to the victory.
Brandon Ashley followed up his successful return from a broken foot with another
solid game, scoring 13 points. T.J. McConnell orchestrated Arizona’s more-fluid
offense, finishing with seven points, eight assists and seven rebounds.
Northridge had trouble with Arizona’s length and athleticism in its second game
against a ranked team, forcing up shots early and making 2 of 10 from 3-point range
overall.
Stephen Maxwell led the Matadors with 19 points and Aaron Parks added 15.
Arizona shook off its nervous start against Mount St. Mary’s with a flurry of steals and
dunks during a late first-half run turned the game into a rout.
The Matadors started the season with a brutal two-step, facing the Wildcats at McKale
Center after opening with a 79-58 loss at San Diego State.
Northridge suited up 10 players against San Diego State while it sorts through
possible rules violation involving several players. The Matadors were down to eight
players against SDSU after Landon Drew was injured midway through the second half
and Tre Hale-Edmerson fouled out.
Even with Drew back in the starting lineup, the Matadors stood little chance against
the Wildcats.
Unlike the first game, Arizona was sharp from the opening tip, working the ball
around on offense to get good looks at the basket, forcing Northridge into difficult
shots at the other end.
The Wildcats struggled from the perimeter in the opener, going 4 for 16 from 3-point
range. They had it dialed in from the arc a little better against the Matadors, making 5
of 11 in the first half while methodically building a 37-23 lead.
Arizona kept on the accelerator in the second half, pushing the lead to 29 points
before pulling back. The Wildcats finished 8 for 18 from 3-point range.
