Wait It’s a time of the year that not many children can appreciate. Then again, not many people can appreciate it either, as we are called to do something our society says we do not need to do – WAIT! In this “NOW” society, if we have to wait for more than three minutes for anything, it’s too long. Yet, Advent is a time of waiting – a time to practice the fruit of the Holy Spirit known as patience. It was once a time that there were lots of long lines in the department stores. Now, our time of waiting might be that the internet is running slower because of so many users who are shopping online. Even the sales for “Black Friday” have gone up tremendously as so many companies are offering sales thru their websites. But physically waiting for time to pass is just the beginning of what Advent calls us to wait for. The whole premise of Advent is that we wait for the Savior of the World – and in more ways than one. The obvious way that we wait is awaiting the celebration of the Nativity of Our Lord, Christmas! What do we do while we wait? We prepare our homes. We buy gifts. We visit relatives and friends. We also prepare our souls by celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We may practice charity. We may take more time to pray about what it means for Jesus to be born, even though we cannot ever fully wrap our feeble minds around the thought. Jesus we understand. The Son of God being BORN into the world? Our God transcending space and time? Of course, He is God. By definition, He can do ANYTHING. So that should not come as any surprise to anyone. Yet, there is certainly a reason we call the Nativity a mystery. The other way that we wait during Advent is the awaiting of Jesus’ triumphant return at the end of time. Again, it’s an “event” that not a single human mind can appreciate. I have been noticing these television shows on the History Channel or the Discovery Channel regarding cataclysmic occurrences in space that would spell the annihilation of space as we know it, and, send huge chunks of debris hurdling through space so that eventually asteroids would pummel the Earth so badly that it would mean extinction of life as we know it. I’m not saying it couldn’t happen like that, but I still prefer the vision we are given by many of Jesus’ return. I realize that will mean the last judgment and that we would all be separated like the sheep and the goats, but that also means we need to be sober and alert for that time. All of that stuff I mentioned earlier about charity, praying, Reconciliation, and more still hold true. As much as Jesus’ birth is a mystery, the narrative in the Book of Revelation probably doesn’t do the end times any real justice. I want to be prepared. I hope you do, too. We will have our Advent Reconciliation Service on December 10th at 7:00 PM, in the Church. And yes, there will be more confessors than just me. Wait in faith, Rev. Michael J. Novick p2 November 30, 2014 St. Lawrence O’Toole Parish Advent 2014—Week One “Wait For the Lord” Parish Reconciliation Service Wednesday, December 10, 7:00 PM Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Holy Day of Obligation) Monday, December 8, 6:30 AM, 8:30 AM & 7:00 PM Masses Advent - “Wait in…” Wait….in Faith “But I believe I shall enjoy the Lord’s goodness in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord, take courage, be stouthearted, wait for the Lord” (Ps 27:13-14) November 30, 2014 1st Sunday of Advent “Take heed, watch and pray; for you do not know when the time will come.” - MARK 13:33 We all take things for granted. In particular, we take time for granted. Our lives are so busy, many of us are planning our time - our days, weeks, months, even years in advance. Remember, our time on earth is a gift. None of us knows how long we will be here. Start today and begin thanking God for each and every day. Take time in silence, everyday, and listen to what God is saying to you. Listen “Are you listening to me?” How many Ɵmes do parents ask their children this quesƟon? More than they can count. The quesƟon, even if asked out of frustraƟon, is a way to help children learn not only to hear but to pay aƩenƟon. Learning to listen and to pay aƩenƟon is a lifelong task, especially for the deepest things of life that involve God’s call and promise. listen and to really pay aƩenƟon to God. The messages are of the utmost importance—God is close, we need to change, and hope is our inheritance. The prophets of Advent, the Church’s worship, and our sacramental celebraƟons alert us and teach us to God is saying to us in so many ways, “Are you listening to me?” Well, are we?
