TWO KINDS OF THANKSGIVING
This Thursday we will observe a national holiday, which is shared
by almost all Americans. To celebrate Thanksgiving a person only has to
believe in God, the one to whom we give thanks, and to recall, and perhaps
state out loud, the reasons for this gratitude.
Since most Americans still believe in God, the first requirement is
easy to fulfill. As for the second, most people, even in the face of real
problems, can find something for which they can give thanks.
I would like, however, to suggest a change, or at least a
broadening, in this second aspect of Thanksgiving. We are used to naming
as our blessings things that make life easier or more enjoyable, such as
good health, a good job, or happy children. It often happens, however, that
we benefit both personally and spiritually, as much from the problems we
face and the misfortunes that come upon us as we do from our good
fortune.
Theoretically, we can grow through our successes and joys just as
easily as we can through our failures, but experience teaches us that deep
growth takes place through the opposite – our losses, our
disappointments, our sorrows. In other words, it is during the dark night
of the soul and not while basking in the sun of our successes that we truly
grow and take on the image of our Lord. It is not through an idealized
image of ourselves but rather by acknowledging our inferiorities and our
blemishes that we learn compassion, forgiveness, and love.
And so, this Thanksgiving I give thanks to God that I now count
the remaining span of my life not in decades but in years. This helps me to
distinguish between what is important and unimportant, between what
will last into eternity and what will pass away.
I give thanks to God for interruptions to my schedule and for the
disruption of my plans. They remind me that ultimately I am not in charge,
only God is, and that there is something to be learned in every new or
unexpected experience.
I give thanks to God for the many times I forget things, whether it
is a person’s name or something I said I would do. Though these lapses are
annoying to me – and to others – they keep me humble and while it isn’t
good to forget a kindness or a favor received, it helps to forget those times
when one is slighted, ignored, or lied to.
I give thanks to God for those who seem to misunderstand what I
say or what I’m trying to do. Their skepticism prompts me to question
further my motives, the depth of my conviction, and how well or how
poorly I communicate.
I give thanks to God for those goals and dreams that I will never
realize. They remind me to live in the present, not in the future or the past,
and to discern better God’s plan for me in the here and now.
I give thanks to God for friends who aren’t perfect. Neither am I,
and they have taught me far more about love and goodness than I have
taught them.
I give thanks to God for a Church that isn’t perfect and that
sometimes disappoints me. This is exactly what Christ said would happen
and somehow this too fits into God’s plan.
And so, on Thanksgiving although I will be thanking God for those
blessings we usually mention on this holiday, I will also be asking God to
help me find blessings in places where I’ve never looked before.

Reflecting on the Word
The Church year ends with a celebration of the universal kingship of Jesus. While today kings have for
most of us a quaint, folkloric quality, in the ancient world they were a force to be reckoned with. The ideal king
was of a powerful defender of his people, a mighty warrior, while a bad king was one who exploited his people
for his own gain. Today’s readings, however, use the imagery of a shepherd, which runs counter to ancient ideas
of both bad kings and good ones. God as our shepherd-king is neither a warrior nor an exploiter, but rather one
who guards his flock and seeks out those who are straying.
This image of God as shepherd is in one sense a very tender one. But the first reading reminds us that the
shepherd also has the role of judging “between one sheep and another, between rams and goats.” The theme of
judgment that was prominent in last week’s readings carries through for this Sunday. But the story told in the
Gospel reading puts that judgment in its proper perspective. The shepherd-king judges on the basis of how
closely we have modeled ourselves on God’s own way of acting. Have we guarded the members of God’s flock
and sought out the lost by feeding the hungry and giving drink to the thirsty, welcoming the stranger and clothing the naked? How we conducted ourselves in a way that would identify us as members of God’s flock or have
we acted like those bad kings who exploit those put into their care for their own gain?

Initiation of Adults: Adults who have not been baptized,
received first Eucharist or Confirmation should contact the
rectory office and ask about enrolling in the R.C.I.A.
Program (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults).
Sacrament of Marriage: Arrangements should be made as
soon as possible, preferably before reserving a place for your
reception, but no later than six months prior to the
wedding. The same priest initiates and completes all the
arrangements with wedding couples.
Communion and Anointing of the Sick: Those who are
unable to attend Mass because of age or declining health
may arrange with the rectory to receive Holy Communion
at home. The Anointing of the Sick is available to those who
are going into the hospital or seriously ill and can either be
administered communally (first Sunday of the month
following the 12:15 PM Mass) or by contacting the rectory
as soon as possible in the event of immediate need.
Update - 2014 Catholic
Ministries Appeal Goal $132,700
Through the generosity of over 990 St. William
parishioners, pledges to the 2014 Catholic Ministries Appeal have reached and exceeded our Appeal goal for this year. Pledges currently total
$173,404. We encourage everyone who may still
be fulfilling their pledge to continue to do so. Payments to date are $153,255.
Completion of these payments means that St. William’s will enjoy a greater share in the Appeal’s rebate program, where a portion of the funds are returned to use for parish needs

St. Vincent de Paul Society – Today as we celebrate Christ the King we
hear Jesus say: “…whatever you did for one of the least brothers and sisters

HEAP BENEFITS – Home Energy Assistance Program - Beginning
November 17th, HEAP Program will be available to help with home
heating in the winter months for income eligible homeowners or renters.
An example of the HEAP monthly income level for a family of two is
$2844 and for a family of four is $4,182. Additionally, HEAP offers
heating equipment repair and/or replacement benefit for homeowners
with inoperable heating equipment. HEAP may help you pay for Oil,
Electricity, Propane, Natural Gas, Wood, Kerosene, Coal, or any other

THIS YEAR CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS
INDOORS AND OUTDOORS
The Pastoral Council of St. William the Abbot invites you to display your Christmas spirit not just
with Santa Claus, elves, and reindeers on the lawn, but with outdoor Nativity Scenes. Even in a largely Christian neighborhood like Seaford, fewer and fewer people decorate their lawns with figures that might remind
the passer-by of the real meaning of Christmas. And so, this year we ask you to join in our own version of the
Keep Christ in Christmas campaign.
Your participation in this campaign will be recognized in the bulletin and/or on our website. Here are
the instructions:
Notify the rectory by December 7th by phone, email, or letter that you have an outdoor Nativity Scene
that you would like to enter in the campaign. If you do not already have an outdoor Nativity scene, they are
available at Costco, Harrow’s, Amazon.com, the Advent Church Goods store in Massapequa, and at many
other stores.
On Sunday, December 14th, members of the Council will visit those homes to take pictures of the outdoor displays and will leave a thank-you from the parish. Since this is a campaign and not a contest, there
will be no winners or losers. We will all win when we all remember why we celebrate Christmas.

Sr. JoAnn Bonauro, SC, Celebrates 25 years of Religious Life
Last Saturday, November 15th, at a special Jubilee Mass, Sr. JoAnn renewed her vows as a Sister of Charity,
Halifax and celebrated this special occasion with family, friends, members of her community and parishioners.
The Mass was followed by a reception in School Auditoiurm with over 250 people

Sign Up As A One-Time Usher for Christmas Masses
As many of you are aware, we are extremely low on Usher participation at many of our Masses. In order to
better prepare for the upcoming Christmas schedule, we are asking for volunteer Ushers for all of our Christmas Masses. These duties will consist of assisting parishioners with seating, taking the collection and distributing the bulletin at the end of the Mass. Below please find the Christmas Mass and location schedule:
Church: Wednesday, December 24th: 4:00 PM, 5:30 PM, 8:30 PM and Midnight
Thursday, December 25th: 7:45 AM, 10:00 AM, 11:30 AM and 12:45 PM
Abbey: Wednesday, December 24th: 4:00 PM
Auditorium: Wednesday, December 24th: 4:00 PM
A sign-up sheet has been placed in the Usher’s Closet in the church lobby for your convenience. Please see
any Usher should you have any questions and to locate the sign-up sheet for this one-time volunteer assignment.
As always, regularly assigned Ushers should also sign up for these Masses. Please contact Joe Missilli by

The Elijah Cup Ministry - Praying for Vocations!
All individuals and families of St. William the Abbot Parish are invited to receive the
Elijah Cup Chalice at a Sunday Mass, and take it to your home. We ask you to pray the
one important prayer for vocations each day, included with the Chalice. Please participate in this important ministry. It’s a special honor to host!
