The legend
and legacy
of Elizabeth
Taylor
After nearly 40 years
writing articles on science
and dealing with the end
user in the beauty industry,
I feel I have earned the
right to stop for a moment
and pay tribute to a
recently passed icon.
An icon with whom I have
brushed shoulders but never
really gotten to know, yet felt
that I knew so well and had
much in common with.
112
S
ome of my more intrepid readers may recall my article in a previous issue
of Professional Beauty entitled “Beauty Therapy Can Be A Drag”, when I
impersonated Elizabeth Taylor at a major European fancy dress ball. This
served to open up a whole new insight into the gender-bender market of
salon and clinic services that are a bigger then ever industry today, thanks
to Dame Edna and RuPaul’s “Drag Race” TV series that have made “being
someone else” mainstream in the USA. In fact, a leading industry publication in the US
has asked me to do a series of pieces on this still not saturated market, the economy
forcing beauty therapists to seek all manner of alternative client bases.
The Liz Taylor impersonation for me was easy, emotionally anyway. Since I was a child
I’ve been fascinated by this little girl who starred in “Lassie” and “National Velvet”, the
little girl who had a mature woman’s face, a face unlike any other on the planet.
Often touted during her movie career as “the world’s most beautiful woman”, back In
the 70s and 80s Dame Elizabeth would scoff with down-to-earth practicality and say “I
am somewhat pretty; Ava Gardner is the most beautiful woman in the world!” The fact
that they became best friends on the set of “The Night of The Iguana” starring Ava and
Elizabeth’s future husband, Richard Burton, was testimony of a woman who had it all yet
was without jealousy of any other female star.
I always felt we had some things in common —both of us being Pisces, both of us
being famous for as long as we could remember (albeit my “fame” being in a far smaller
sphere!) and yet not being overly influenced by celebrity.
Elizabeth once said, in regard to her so-called “beauty” that she was full of flaws and only
had the ability to make people THINK she looked good! I have felt that way many, many
times—which I feel has made growing older much easier than if I’d bought into any flattery I
may have garnered along the way. People who KNOW they are handsome or beautiful when
young often think that is all they really have and become somewhat desperate as time erodes
the perfection. And ageing is not at all kind to these natural beauties.
Like Elizabeth, I have always had a zest for life and a curiosity about everyone and
everything around me—an openness and lack of subterfuge and secrecy for as long as I
could remember. She paid for this with years of media and press scrutiny—I pay for it
with friends who became enemies for no apparent reason and enemies from the outset
becoming lifelong and dependable friends!
It is hard to always understand someone who seems to survive everything despite
sickness and setbacks and the rise and fall of fortune and who, at the same time, is just
themselves and speaks their mind.

keu n for maintaining what she had over the decades - and

experiences - Elizabeth Taylor DID always have

professional beauty treatments. Speculations over plastic
surgery were never confirmed—especially after she allowed
a photo of her head, shaved bald
after brain tumor surgery (see g star
The agein
no scars people!)
But I know for a fact
she respected our industry,
information personally given
me by the legendary American
beauty therapist, Nina Curtiss,
who was Ms. Taylor’s last
therapist before her death.
Nina told me that having to
go to Elizabeth’s home in Bel
Aire was sometimes a nightmare!
Not because of Elizabeth herself
- Nina stated she was wonderful,
had a great sense of humor despite
being in constant pain and was
very appreciative of Nina’s work
and healing facials. She claimed that it made her entire body feel
better, including the many oesteo problems aquired over the years
(therapists take note here, you may be treating a great deal more
than the face with similar clients).
It was the sycophants and staff and “friends” of Elizabeth that
made it so hard for Nina, a majestic and conservative woman in
her own right, to do her best work like she does in her Beverly
Hills ‘Nile Institute” spa.
The security alone was a huge hassle, even after seeing Miss
Curtiss in the house many times and knowing Elizabeth depended
upon her services. Jealousy ran rampant in the ranks surrounding
the star—and was often not noticed. “But” said Nina” “when Miss
Taylor DID notice everyone giving her a hard time, the famous
violet eyes would flash, she would bark “Get out, let the woman
do her work!” and they would scatter like leaves.
Of course this only made it harder behind the scenes later on,
but Nina grew so fond of Elizabeth and her warm and giving heart
she felt that the hassle was worth it.
This generosity reflects in AIDS research today, Elizabeth
Taylor being the first celebrity to put her reputation and fortune
on the line way back in the day when AIDS was a dirty word nice
people did not mention and everyone was afraid. She was outraged
when many of her friends, such as Rock Hudson, were dying like
winter flowers and no one was doing much about it. The Elizabeth
Taylor Foundation was the forerunner of today’s huge AIDS and
HIV research campaigns and public acceptance and awareness.
I was there in the early 80s and, in my own small way, dealt
with AIDS patients that no one would touch. I had a partner of 22
years, who at age 25 contracted the virus and said to me “Well, I
will not blame you if you want to break up!”
My reply was “Are you crazy? We will beat this thing; you will
not die” and spent the next two decades keeping this victim on
every cell-maintaining programme I could think of, often travelling
out of the country, until the cocktails and protease inhibitors
became public and available. He celebrated his 51st birthday on
April 30th this year.
I was up close and personal with Elizabeth twice. The first time
was many years ago at the premier of “The Sandpiper”. It was a
typical Hollywood premier with all the trimmings, arc lights, red
carpet and thousands of screaming fans.

How I managed to be near
the curb, right in front, I do not
remember. The stretch limo pulled
up right in front of me and the back
door opened before the chauffer
could even get around and open it.
One chiffon-clad leg (powder
blue) stepped out ,followed by
a raised hand and her hair in an
up do, scraping the door frame.
The fabulous and famous jewellery
sparkled and shone, the only thing
that could outdo her!
Without thinking, I leapt forward and grabbed her hand
and pulled her to the curb. She looked up into my face
(goose bumps while I write this!) and gave me a level stare
with those violet/ green/ hazel colour-changing eyes fringed
with thick, thick sooty lashes—eyes that seemed to go on
forever, reading my mind, saying somehow “Hello there; I
know you, we should talk later.”
Then that curved, full mouth broke into a movie star
smile that encompassed all and sundry and security
came, along with Richard Burton, and whisked her away.
I stood there shaking as the crowd roared “Liz, Liz, LIZ”
over and over again, (at one point as they walked the red carpet
Richard Burton boomed out jovially “What about ME?”)
I could feel somehow he actually meant it.
Over the years I have had many friends who were friends with
Elizabeth and I was hoping that she would somehow see that
article I did in Professional Beauty and the photos. One of them
said he would show her and she would be delighted to see such
an impersonation! But illness was upon her much of the time and
public outings, at least with him, prevented this from happening.
I was ready to ask Nina to show her at some point, but somehow
never got around to it.
I “ran” into Elizabeth one last time a year ago. I was going to
the Abby in West Hollywood for happy hour one afternoon (The
Abby is a popular watering hole to be seen and to see people. It
features a painting by Elizabeth over a fireplace under where she
holds court.
A block away I saw the flashes of the paparazzi and a huge,
black foreign car in front of the bar.
Celebrities are common in West Hollywood, although usually
not in this style, so I KNEW it was her!
Sure enough, a wheel chair came out from the gate surrounded
with an entourage and there she was, still with the milk-and-roses
skin, the curved scarlett lips and a big black cowboy hat, famous eyes
sheilded by huge sunglasses.
Older and much wiser now, I approached within 10 feet, people
jumping up and down in front of me. I said “Hello Elizabeth”, softly—
no one could hear. I could swear her head turned towards me and
once again, behind the shades, those eyes were looking into eternity.
She was trundled into the vast automobile and once again
whisked away with flashing camera lights pursuing.
I was in shock when news of her passing came, although I knew
it was to be soon.
The Phoenix just could not rise one more time—she gave us
more spectacular “flights” than anyone else—we were her life and
through her we saw life at its best and most passionate.
This kind of star, her kind, will never be seen again. And we
will be more the losers for it.
Goodbye Elizabeth, from all who knew you, somehow.

I had really bad acne from about 12 years old and felt like I had
tried everything. After completing my beauty therapy training,
my skin was twice as bad as a result of all the facials at college.
About three months later I received an invitation to hear Danné
Montague-King and a few others speak at a plastic surgeon and
endocrinologist lecture at the skeleton museum in the city; when
I heard his lecture and saw his results, I just knew this is what I
wanted to do. I knew what it felt like to suffer with bad skin and
I knew how life changing it was to fix my skin. I wanted to help
people and have a positive impact on their lives.

Danné Skin

DeBBie Dickson, director of education
for DMk AusTrAliA and founder
of the DAnné skin reVision
clinic in Crows Nest, shares the story of
the successful paramedical skin clinic with
ProfessionAl BeAuTy.
The Danné Skin
Revision Clinic has
a very professional
feel and look, very
clean and crisp.
Hygiene is of utmost
priority when you are
performing serious
skin revision, but we
still want our clients to
feel comfortable. The
predominant colours
in the clinic are
creamy white and light
green, as this is DMK
Australia’s signature
clinic. These are DMK’s colours, so it is in keeping with the brand.
We are very passionate about results and complete customer
satisfaction. I believe this provides solutions for clients’ skin and
body concerns - our philosophy is “rebuilding skin, rebuilding
lives.” I never really think about competitors, but I do know
that in this economic climate, people won’t spend as much
on pampering-style treatments, but they do spend on resultsoriented treatments. I think to be able to change something you
don’t like and enhance your appearance is very empowering. We
have clients who say our treatments are addictive. Our target
market is anyone wanting to look better or wanting to continue
170
looking their best. I think there is
a misconception about DMK; that
it is only for people who have a
skin condition or problem. This
is completely wrong. DMK is for
everyone, male and female. We
have a huge male clientele who love our treatments, as well as
teenagers through to those who are ageing. In fact, most of our
clients don’t have anything wrong with their skin, they just like
treatments that really work with the skin’s internal processes, not
merely acting on the surface.
A lot of our clients have careers that depend on their looks,
such as actresses and models, they rely on us to maintain their
appearance. We also have a large number of media and PR clients
who want to experience DMK first-hand and build relationships
with DMK. In fact, many beauty editors have been having regular
DMK treatments and using DMK products for 10 or more years.

Our Pro Alpha Six-Layer Peel skin revision system is also
extremely popular as the results are outstanding. We have a lot
of doctors who send their patients to Danné Skin Revision Clinic
after a face-lift for our peels, as they offer the ultimate resurfacing
treatment. Our new A-Lift (aesthetic lift) would also be right up
there with most popular, especially with our older clients. This is
a 12-week, age management program, which strengthens the skin
for optimal skin firming and tightening. We
have clients do this 12-week program every
year, because, as everyone knows, muscles
have memory and part of our A-Lift
program is our muscle banding technique,
which firms the facial muscles; the second
time around the skin responds so quickly,
it’s truly amazing.
When I finished my beauty therapy
training I worked with several other brands,
but to be honest, the whole cleanseexfoliate-massage-mask routine became
very boring; I couldn’t help wondering
why we did all that anatomy and physiology and never really
used it. When I heard Danné speak a light bulb switched on, it
made complete sense; you could choose what techniques and
formulations you wanted to use to achieve a desired result, not the
same old robotic sequence. DMK is also very much about not just
treating the condition, but addressing the reasons why it occurred.
DMK gets to the core of the problem, no matter how big or small.
It has science behind it, a system of revising and keeping skin
in a healthy balanced state - this system is REMOVE, REBUILD,
PROTECT, and MAINTAIN. I feel there are too many treatments
and machines in this industry that focus on ‘remove’ alone;
everyone exfoliates, peels, has microdermabrasion – everything!
I’m yet to find another brand that focuses on rebuilding a stronger
healthier skin by regulating imbalances and dysfunctions that cause
the skin condition in the first place. DMK have a saying: “everything
Skincare
that presents itself on the surface of the skin is directly related to
something that is happening within the skin.”
All of the DMK home prescriptive range has a transdermal
delivery system, so we know our active ingredients are getting
to the cellular level where they can influence that new ‘baby’
cell moving through. Danné also uses ingredients to imitate the
normal, natural environment that skin cells thrive in; you can
have a thousand of the most so-called ‘miracle’ active ingredients,
but if they don’t have a delivery system and just sit on the surface
I don’t know how effective they are going to be. To top it all off,
DMK also have outstanding education. I could go on forever for me, there is no comparison. If you are serious about skin
and long-term client satisfaction, then DMK is the one. From a
business point of view, clients don’t only come every three to six
months for a facial as a treat; they come every four to six weeks,
religiously, because they see the difference and spread the word.
“DMK gets to the core of the problem no
matter how big or small. It has science behind
it, a system of revising and keeping skin in a
healthy, balanced state - this system is remove,
rebuild, protect, and maintain... DMK have
a saying: ‘everything that presents itself on
the surface of the skin is directly related to
something that is happening within the skin.’”
Every day is different, but typically we would do about five to
eight facial treatments per therapist per day, with a lot of repeat
clients, as they would be on packages or programs. Most days we
have three therapists on, and three days of the week we work
till 8.30pm. We do around one to two IPL treatments per day, as
well as one to two Pro Alpha Six Layer Peels per week, with peels
usually being booked on Thursday or Friday so they peel over the
weekend. We will also always have a couple of pre and post-op
patients per week. But, like anywhere, we have our quiet times.
I think the re-education process is very challenging for a
lot of people. The transition from typical cosmetic facials to
understanding DMK is not easy. We tend to get clients who have
tried everything, so it can take time to win their trust. Celebrities
and media professionals can also be hard to win over at first, but
most of those clients come through a personal recommendation,
so they have some initial understanding because
they have been told by someone they really trust.
Since we service a lot of clients whose career
depends on them looking good, we have had an
increase in demand for body treatments and
solutions to body problems, such as ageing to
the backs of hands, stretch marks, sun-damaged
décolletage and pigmentation on arms or legs.
Their face may look great, but they are conscious
about body issues. Danné developed a series of
treatments to address these types of body issues
and we are doing a lot more than we have in the
past. I think the next few years will be a very
exciting time, as we are well established, our brand
is extremely strong and we have good connections.
We have such an integrative approach, so we will
keep up with this direction.”
