FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT November 30, 2014 ALBERT BIONDI 1921-2014 RIP Albert Biondi, former soloist and cantor at Saint Patrick’s Basilica, Montreal died on Saturday November 22, 2014 at the age of ninety-three. Albert was awarded the Msgr. Russell Whitton Breen Medal at the Green Mass in 2009 by Msgr. Francis Coyle in recognition of his enormous contribution to the Parish. Albert was discovered by Msgr. McShane (pastor of Saint Patrick's Parish 19071955) after McShane heard Albert sing Come Back to Sorrento during the 1940 graduation ceremony at the Montreal Catholic High School. The day after the ceremony Brother Patrick, the school principal, pulled Albert from class and sent him running to St. Patrick's where he met with McShane in his office. McShane informed Albert that he would be singing O Holy Night at Midnight Mass and that Albert should "consider it a privilege and an honour to be able to say that he sang in St. Patrick's Church." He also told him to become Irish as soon as possible. After a stint in the army, where Albert entertained the troops overseas along with fellow Montrealer Roger Doucet, (the tenor who later celebrated O Canada at sporting events in Montreal), he returned to the choir in 1947. Albert was a fixture at the Tuesday Devotions to Our Lady of Perpetual Help, with his repertoire of much loved Marian hymns. Albert leaves behind to mourn his wife, Concetta Foschetti and three children and their families. Albert’s Funeral Mass took place at Saint Patrick’s Basilica on Friday November 28th. There are numerous volunteer groups, whose service forms part of our mission and raison d’être of the Parish of St. Patrick. A luncheon is given during the Christmas season for our volunteers, at which time gifts donated by parishioners are drawn.
