Christmas Tree Lighting
We will have our ‘Annual Christmas Tree Lighting’ sponsored by the J.V.
Kavanaugh Council of the Knights of Columbus on Tuesday, December
2nd at 6PM on the front lawn of the parish center nearest to Neighborhood Rd. All parishioners and our friends in the community are invited to
attend in ‘Keeping Christ in Christmas’. All are welcome for light refreshments immediately following at the Council Hall on Madison St. & Pawnee Avenue.
Christmas Giving Tree
The St. Jude Giving Tree has been decorated with the Christmas wishes
of needy children in our community. Each star lists suggested gifts for
one child, along with their age and sizes. Please consider taking a star
home today and purchasing a gift (or gifts) for that child. UNWRAPPED
gifts with the star attached can be left under the tree next weekend or
returned to outreach or the rectory BY DECEMBER 10th in order for us
to have enough time to sort and get them to the correct families before
Christmas Eve.
Holiday Gift Idea- Need a Christmas gift idea for the person who has
everything? How about a donation in their name to help people who
don’t have as much? You will receive a small ornament to give them on
Christmas saying that a donation has been made in their honor. Stop by
outreach between 9 a.m. and 1p.m., Mon-Thurs. for more information.
Keep Christ in Christmas Lawn Signs
The Shrine of St. Jude Knights of Columbus, ‘Keep Christ in Christmas’
signs will be available for pickup at the Christmas Fair on December 6th
for all who previously ordered. Any questions please contact the Grand
Knight, Benny Schiraldi at 281-6501.
Bulletin Reflection
We are the servants of God, each with his or her own task. We will be
judged good stewards if, at His coming, he finds us ready, conscientiously
pursuing the tasks to which we have been called.
From the Pastor
November 30th, 2014
First Sunday of Advent
New Year
The New Year of Grace 2015 has begun. As a parish, it has been a busy year for St. Jude, and the
year ahead will be even more so. Thankfully, we have been debt-free since the fourth quarter of 2013. It
has been a relief not to have that burden “hanging over our heads.” We are current with and paying all
of our bills and diocesan assessments, and continue to make improvements and upgrades to our parish
buildings and grounds; we also are always seeking ways to cut or reduce recurring expenses and make
necessary purchases as prudently as possible. As you know with your household budgets, “a little here and
a little there” can really add up to significant savings for the parish and our consequent ability to allocate
those resources in other directions.
One of the projects that we had placed on the Capital Campaign list was the parish center upper
level. We decided that we did not want to wait another year to start saving on fuel and electric upstairs, in
addition to other practical and aesthetic considerations. So we put some of those reserves to work and upgraded the classrooms and hallways. Unused partitions were removed from the Pre-Kindergarten room and
a permanent, solid wall was constructed between the two rooms on the west side of the building. Defunct
ceiling-mounted air conditioning cabinets from the old system and accompanying wiring were removed.
All ceilings were insulated and lowered with acoustical tile; and LED lighting fixtures were installed. We
are already seeing a savings on our PSE&G bills. All walls were freshly painted, and wood chair-rail and
trim stripped down and re-finished. New doors were installed with vision panels for open access; the door
bucks were stripped and repainted. New tile, a new toilet, basin and faucets and privacy panel were installed in the lavatory… I believe that covers most of the work accomplished. We will look into replacing
the windows in the coming year, and the 3000 gallon in-ground fuel-oil tank with an above-ground 1000
gallon one, if other options are not feasible (see below).
Since we have been upgrading our lighting, we are also planning on replacing the parish center exterior fixtures and parking lot lights to LED units in the near future, when weather conditions are favorable and we find a good deal on the units. And we are always looking for the best deals we can find. These
lights will save on electricity costs and have a longer life-span than the current fixtures. At this point, this
work will most likely be done in the spring.
If the weather is favorable in the coming weeks, there will be some minor church repair going on.
We have lost a few roofing shingles here and there from the wind, etc., so they will be replaced. Additionally, we will be replacing any deteriorated original concrete-board around the windows, corner posts and
trim-boards with rot-proof Azek material, which will long outlive any of us. Windows will be re-siliconed
where needed. All will be done in preparation for exterior painting come spring. And we will be looking
into new exterior doors, frames, and trim.
The church heating system is working well, all things considered. Thankfully, the oil burner is
holding its own and operating properly to provide hot water for the in-floor radiant system. This type of
system is very difficult to regulate accurately, especially when there are wide exterior temperature fluctuations, and when there are a large number of people in church, so we are going to be exploring the possibility of heat pumps or hot water fed coils in the air duct system to supplement the radiant heat under
the tile floor. We were hoping that natural gas would be available to us down here soon, but it appears that
this may not be a reality until some years into the future. We may also explore the possibility of propane
for heating fuel in the church and parish center, weighing out all possible options to find the best one for
the long-term.
An update on the upcoming Capital Campaign… as I reported last month, the plan to construct a
new daily Mass chapel/candle shrine on the site of the old church has been very well received, and so many
people in the parish and the community are excited about it! When speaking with Mastic Beach Mayor
Bill Biondi two weeks ago, he expressed that the Village is ready and willing to help promote the project
however they can. This is most encouraging, as it is obvious to all that a beautiful chapel-shrine, fountain,
and grounds will be a sparkling jewel on Neighborhood Road that is certain to inspire more improvement
in the area and will draw visitors here once again. We hope to have some preliminary drawings within the
next few weeks, so that the parish will have a good idea of what the structure will look like; and then we
can officially begin the campaign! Please stay tuned for more good news.
And please plan on attending the performance of G.F. Handel’s Messiah this coming Friday here in
the church. It is a high-quality production without the high-price of Carnegie Hall and the hassle and cost
of travelling into NYC. What’s not to like? Tell your family and friends too!
Blessed Advent,
Fr. Greg
The Advent Wreath
A Rite for the Beginning
of Advent at Home
THE FIRST DAY OF THE WREATH
IS IN THE HOME, THE LEADER
MAY SAY: “As our nights grow
longer and our days grow short, we
look on these earthly signs—light
and green branches—and remember God’s promise to our world:
Christ, our Light and our Hope, will
come. Listen to the words of Isaiah
the prophet: The people that walked
in darkness have seen a great light;
on those who lived in a land as dark
as death a light has dawned. You
have increased their joy and given
them gladness; They rejoice in your
presence as those who rejoice at
harvest, as warriors exult when
dividing spoil.” —Is. 9:1-2
THEN ALL PRAY: “O God, rejoicing,
we remember the promise of your
Son. As the light from this candle,
may the blessing of Christ come
upon us, brightening our way and
guiding us by his truth. May Christ
our Savior bring life into the darkness of our world, and to us, as we
wait for his coming. We ask this
through Christ our Lord.
Amen”
Then the first candle is lit.
Each day at home, the candles
are lit, perhaps before the evening
meal—one candle the first week,
and then another each succeeding
week until December 25th. The rose
candle is usually lit on the third Sunday of Advent. As the candles are lit,
a prayer may be said.
Daily Prayer for Lighting
the Advent Wreath
First Week: O Emmanuel, Jesus
Christ, desire of every nation, Savior
of all peoples, come and dwell
among us.
What do Advent wreath
candles signify?
Most Advent wreaths have three
purple candles and one rose to echo
the liturgical colors of the Church’s
Advent celebrations. Whether the
wreath is being used at home or in
a church, the lighting of the candles
should follow the pattern established
by the Sundays of Advent.
Just as the vestments at Mass are
purple during the first two weeks
of Advent, the first two candles of
the wreath to be lit (one for each
week) should be purple. On the third
Sunday of Advent, the Church celebrates Gaudete Sunday or Rejoice
Sunday, named after the first word
of the day’s traditional entrance
verse (Philippians 4:4–5). The priest
wears rose vestments at Mass as
a sign of our brightening hope and
joy. At that point, at home or at
church, we light the rose candle in
our wreath to reflect the action in the
liturgy. The fourth week of Advent
sees the lighting of the last purple
candle.
Some churches and families have
begun to add a fifth candle to their
Advent practices, placing a white
candle in the center of their wreath.
They light this at Christmas, again
echoing the Church’s liturgical
color for the season and rejoicing in
Christ our Lord, whose birth brings
light and our life to our world.
We Wait For Jesus Christ our
Lord!

Advent and Christmas seasons.
St. Vincent de Paul
Jesus said to his disciples: “Be watchful! Be alert. You do not know when
the time will come.” Advent symbolizes our human condition. We long. We
hope. We rejoice in what we have. We yearn for what we have not. Even
nature conspires during Advent time to make us feel our human incompleteness. As the darkness of winter descends, we long for the light. As cold
numbs us, we yearn for the warmth of God’s love. Join the Society of St.
Vincent de Paul!
