JUNIOR SCHOOL
THE WEEKLY BULLETIN OF TRINITY GRAMMAR SCHOOL JUNIOR SCHOOL
MICHAELMAS TERM | BULLETIN VIII
FRIDAY 28TH NOVEMBER 2014
FROM THE MASTER OF THE JUNIOR SCHOOL
“Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is the Mersiah, the Lord.”
Luke 2:11
Congratulations to all Year 3 boys on a very successful Football
gala day last Saturday morning. It was an excellent time for the
Preparatory and Junior School boys to enjoy and also display their
football skills to Mum and Dad.
On Tuesday evening, the Junior School held our annual Evening
of Music. Congratulations to the boys for an outstanding evening.
From our Year 2 String programme through to the Choir and an
excellent performance from our Don Holder Scholar – Matthew
Boyce. It was an evening to remember. Thank you to Mr Adams,
Ms Morgan, Mr Del Riccio, Ms Ortega along with the music tutors,
Mr Henry, Mrs Korjenevski, Mr Shaw and Mr Grimm. Music at
Trinity is in a very strong position due to the dedication of our
wonderful Music Staff.
There is certainly an air of excitement in the School today, with the
Fiesta set up in full swing. Rides are arriving, stalls are being set up,
delivery vans full of all manner of sweet treats are being unloaded.
It is sure to be an outstanding day of fun for all of our boys! Parents
are reminded that attendance at the Fiesta is compulsory for all
boys in Years 3-6. Rolls will be available on the Number 3 oval
(where all of the great rides are) and boys are expected to find the
staff member on duty to have their names marked off. Teachers
will be on duty there from 10am-5pm. We have reminded the boys
today that they are expected to wear their full summer uniform,
including black school shoes, and green playground hat.
I am really looking forward to tonight’s Festival of Nine Lessons
and Carols at St. Andrew’s Cathedral, and to listening to our Junior
School Choir join together with the Preparatory School Singers and
the School Choir. It is on this night every year, that I am thankful
for the opportunity to pause, for just a couple of hours, to leave my
lists of all that I still need to do before the year ends, to reflect on
all of the wonderful things that have happened in the Junior School
this year, and to look forward to all that is still to come. It is a truly
stunning Service and it would be lovely if you are able to join us
tonight, or perhaps on Sunday night in the School’s War Memorial
Chapel, at 8pm.
The coming week is a big one in the Junior School! On Monday
morning at 8:30am we have the Summer Sport and Co-curricular
awards assembly in the Chapel. We have the Year 6 Farewell
Luncheon and Valedictory Service on Tuesday, the Infants
Christmas Concerts and Picnic Day for Years 3-6 on Wednesday,
and finally the Junior School Annual Prize Giving and Speech Day
to end our year together, on Thursday, beginning at 10:00am in
the Assembly Hall. A separate letter will be sent home on Monday
outlining the arrangement for Speech Day. Best wishes for a great
weekend!

Trinity Grammar School has a strong tradition of embracing Innovative Technologies. Our teachers harness the potential that
technology has to transform learning and embed opportunities to extend learning through the use of 1:1 devices at all year
levels.
Throughout this term dedicated 1:1 student trolleys of Chromebooks were rolled out to all Year 3 and 4 classrooms. The
devices have provided students an ideal platform through which to perform learning through inquiry, research and to
authentically express themselves through presentations, collages, video editing and website creation.
From Term 1, 2015, we will transition to the next stage of the School’s eLearning Strategy that will see:
ÆÆ
PK-2
iOS iPad: School provided for students in Years PK-2 as a 1:1 at school only device.
ÆÆ
3-4
Chromebook: School provided for students
in Years 3-4 as a 1:1 at school only device.
ÆÆ
5-7
BYOC – Bring Your Own Chromebook:
Students in Years 5-7 will be asked to bring
a Chromebook for use at school and at
home from 2015.
For boys currently in Years 4-6, comprehensive
information including purchasing options,
device specifications, user guides, key contacts
and FAQs are available at http://bit.ly/tgs_byod

FROM THE SPORTSMASTER
YEAR 3 GALA DAY
On Saturday the 22nd November, the Junior and Preparatory
Schools celebrated the final Gala day of the year with Football
games at Bressington Park. It was another great morning as all
the boys were fired up and raring to go. It has been fantastic
to see improvements in skill amongst the boys; they have been
working well under the direction of our Senior School MIC of
Football each Thursday, Mr Arambasic.
Overall, the Gala days have been a great time for all the boys
and parents to come along and play and see the boys in action.
Thank you to all of the staff who have assisted implementing
the programme on Thursday and for their continued support on
Saturdays.
I would also like to thank all parents for their continued support of
these events. Please continue to work with your son to improve
upon the skills learned during the sessions on Thursday. There
is no better way to connect with your son than to play sport and
teach them the values of sportsmanship.
STATE LITTLE ATHLETICS RELAYS
A few of our boys were involved in the State Little Athletics
Relays at Homebush on Saturday. The boys competed in the hot
38 degree heat and did a great job, with Jonathan Titmarsh and
Finn Murphy achieving Bronze U13 in the High Jump and Long
Jump respectively, and Lochlan Prentice placing 5th in the Shot
Put and Discus relay.
Ben Cook | Sportsmaster
FINAL SWIMMING REPORT
As the sun sets on the Term 4 Swimming Team
Invitational Programme, it is wonderful to reflect
back on the outstanding performances by our
boys. In the past month, eight school records
have been broken. Four of these to Zachary
Nguyen, and two each to James McCabe and
Garry Koshnitsky, these records demonstrate
the wonderful effort and dedication that these
students put into training outside the usual school
day.
Our final carnival of the season was held at St
Patrick’s College under the scorching sun. It has
been many years since I have witnessed such
a dominant display by our boys across many
age groups. Our Year 6 team, led by Garry
Koshnitsky, James McCabe, Anton Markovic,
Rory Martin, Pierce Foley, Alex Jones,
Sebastian Buchannan and injured captain Ethan
Brouw were sensational, providing wonderful
support to the staff and leading by example in the
pool.
I must also take this opportunity to thank Mr Kelly,
Mr Hassall and Mr Cook for their support of the
swimming programme in 2014. We are incredibly
lucky to not only have outstanding facilities to
train our students, but to also have the School
committed to supporting our boys in the many
facets of their education.

RUGBY CLINIC
The ‘Junior Rugby Clinic’ will be running again in 2015. The clinic is open to Preparatory and Junior School boys in
Years 3 to 6 and will be held on Friday afternoons from 3:45pm to 5:00pm on Oval 3 of the Summer Hill campus. It
will commence on Friday 6th February 2015 and run for the remainder of the term.
The clinic will develop handling skills, evasive footwork, spatial awareness and game sense. The training is designed
to be fun and fast with the emphasis on non-contact skills and games. The program will be delivered by Josh Clark, an
ARU Level 2 coach. Josh has worked with the Senior and Junior School Rugby teams for the past 4 seasons, prior to
this he played professional Rugby in the UK and was involved with England schoolboys.
The cost of the Rugby Clinic is only $100 for the term. If you would like your son to join please fill out the registration
form on the School’s Directory. This can be accessed by visiting the home page of either the Junior and Prep school
websites and clicking on the ‘Rugby clinic’ link.
Payment for this activity is required prior to attendance. Please note Preparatory School boys may have to make their
own travel arrangements, as spaces on the bus to the Summer Hill campus are limited. Boys should wear any School
sports clothing and bring mouth guards and boots.
If you require any additional information, please contact Josh Clark on [email protected] or Lachlan
White, Director of Rugby Coaching at Trinity [email protected].

Timely Reflections…
By Mr Ron Ogier (1966 – 1994) and (1997 – present)
CANDY CANES AND CHRISTMAS
No doubt you have heard of the hard candy named rock, which appears in various
guises, perhaps the most famous in Australia being Castlemaine Rock. However,
there is one version which appears around about Christmas in the form of candy
canes, and these sweets are full of symbolism which connects with Christmas.
First, the hard material of which they are made, candy rock, represents the
idea of Christ being the rock on which we may build our lives. The white candy
represents His purity, the broad red stripe the blood which He shed for us on
the Cross, and the three narrow red stripes (these are found only on genuine
candy canes) represent both the Trinity and the marks of the scourging Christ
received the wounds to his hands and feet, and from the crown of thorns. The
shape of the canes represents the shepherd’s crook, with Christ being the
Good Shepherd, while if the cane is held upside down, it forms the letter J for Jesus.
Going back historically for 350 years or so, the candy cane has been a traditional decoration, nowadays
in many colours and flavours, and for what it is worth, may be considered an aide memoire for us to ponder the greater
significance of the Christmas season.

SOCIETY OF THE ARTS
It was, you may recollect, a rather beastly day last Saturday – so
hot and horrid temperature wise, so when one visited the current
exhibition at Delmar it was not surprising that the exhibition
was rather beastly too! Actually, there were pictures of beasts
all over the place, nigh on one hundred or so! However, to set
the record straight though, the exhibition by over 50 artists was
titled BEASTLY, the works therein were most absorbing and
interesting, dealing as they did with animal themes. There was an
enormous range of media used: glass, resin and steel; statuary
marble; oil on linen; charcoal and paper – even flyscreen mesh
and pins, tape and thread – to mention just a few! The works on
display also range in feeling from frivolously amusing to rather
dark themes, but all repaid close observation. BEASTLY is open
until December 7. The exhibition may well be a source of unique
Christmas gifts for you, too, as the prices of the works are quite
reasonable. Perhaps during the Fiesta you might like to pop in to
Delmar and see this unusually themed exhibition.
