Year 3 to 6 Winners
Year K to 2 Winners
Dear Parents and Friends of the Junior School,
I would like to report to the Junior School Community two special
events that have taken place this week.
Firstly, the K-2 and 3-6 Speech Competition finals. Both of these
finals were of a very high standard and my congratulations go to all
the finalists. What was most impressive was the poise, confidence
and diction of the K-2 boys. Our youngest members of the School
took it in their stride and delivered speeches that were interesting,
funny and well-constructed. All finalists should be very proud of
their efforts. Public speaking is an excellent pursuit as well as a
skill that will assist the boys as they continue to grow and learn.
Congratulations to the following winners of the Junior School
Speech Competition, 2014.
An impressed audience!
Secondly, yesterday was the Junior School Auxiliary AGM. Under
the excellent leadership of the President, Mrs Carolyn Tran, the
AGM was a smooth and most convivial process. The Junior
School Auxiliary has throughout the year worked tirelessly for the
benefit of the boys, and it has been a wonderful opportunity for me
to sit in on each monthly meeting and listen to the good ideas put
forward by the parent body. I am looking forward to spending time
with parents tonight at the Auxiliary Christmas Party. It is to be
held at Hazelhurst Gallery, 782 The Kingsway, Gymea and begins
at 7:00pm. There are spaces still available and parents are most
welcome to attend and pay on arrival.
Please take time to look at the diary dates section of the Junior
School Newsletter.

SPEECH COMPETITION WINNERS
(from page 1)
Last Friday the swimming team took to the pool for
the first time against seven opposing schools. From
the outset it was clear that our boys have trained very
hard over the long cold winter months. Our coaches
have done a simply outstanding job!
Without a doubt the highlight for the team from Trinity
Grammar School Junior School was our new star in
the pool Zachariah Ngyuen. Zachariah swam two
incredible times in the 8 years boys 25m freestyle
and backstroke, breaking not only the School records
but also the meet records for the events. His time
of 16.03 seconds smashed the previous best set an
astounding 9 years ago.
Well done to all the boys who participated in the
Kindergarten to Year Two Speech Competition this year.
The topics chosen for the boys to speak on were directly
linked to units of inquiry they had already covered or
are currently working on. The teachers had a tough job
choosing their class’ finalists. The students chosen did a
great job presenting their speech in front of their parents,
grandparents and peers. The three winners were Taj
Mace (2R), Joshua Falato (1W) and Zeke Gourlas (KT).
Jenny Tredinnick | Infants Co-ordinator
Other pleasing swims came from all our relays, with
all teams finishing in the places. A huge thank you to
our Sportsmaster Mr Cook and from the Preparatory
School, Mr Mormarnis for organising the carnival.
Christopher Allum | MIC Swimming
SCOTTISH ENCOUTNER!
As part of our unit of inquiry, 'How we Express Ourselves', Year One were surprised to see Mr Niulala walk into the
classroom wearing a funny skirt! The boys had many interesting predictions as to why Mr Niulala was dressed up.
Mrs Bremner had actually come to visit, with Mr Niulala as her Scottish model! She wanted to talk about a special
Scottish celebration called Hogmanay (Scottish New Year).
Mrs Bremner told us about some traditions such as the wearing of kilts and the 'First Footing' where the men are the
first to enter the house, with a gift, at the stroke of midnight.
To end the afternoon, the boys sang ‘Auld Lang Syne’ in a circle created by the joining of hands. A huge thank you to
Mrs Bremner. The boys had lots of fun.

Timely Reflections…
By Mr Ron Ogier (1966 – 1994) and (1997 – present)
This week I found myself in a big hole at Trinity – a very
big hole indeed! It was the result of 15 thousand cubic
metres of material being removed north of the Chapel
Way, and is, of course the excavation for the new
Aquatic Centre. The Site Manager, Darren Chignell
of Lipmann Constructions, very kindly allowed me to
make a photographic study of the site, my impression
of which was that, though from ground level it was
obviously large, down at the level which will be floor
of the pool itself, things seemed positively enormous!
An interesting point has been reached in the last few
days, too: the drainage pipes for seepage under the
pool were being laid, thus forming the lowest point of
the main excavation, while along the south side the
square columns which will support the roof, reached
their maximum height, or rather, the reinforcing steel
rods have, the right-angled bends at their tops being
where the ceiling level will be.
The plant room, to be situated in the north-western
corner of the site, right next door to the Junior School,
is an even deeper hole. The outer shell of the whole
structure is firmly anchored to the surrounding rock by
a series of highly-tensioned steel rods set in concrete
cylinders reaching thirty metres or more into the
country rock. The view of the site from above is also
impressive.
The visit was great experience, and leaves no doubt
that the facility will be of the highest standard, a solidly
built one, serving the boys of the School for many
years. The structure also gives us an object lesson.
The reinforcing bars deep within the concrete columns
give them their strength, reminding us, perhaps, that
our lives need the inner strengthening which comes
from a faith in Christ.
1. and 2. The Old Pool sits to the west of the new excavation. 3. The solid foundations of one of the main supporting pillars on
the south side. 4. The Prospect Road side of the Pool. 5. The very deep excavation for the Plant Room lies next to the Junior
School’s east end. 6. An overall view of the site.

YEAR 2 HAS A SPECIAL GUEST!
Senior School artist in residence Ms April Campbell from the Ti Tree community which is located north of Alice Springs,
visited our Year 2 class last week to talk about the signs and symbols she uses in her work. This was an invaluable
experience for the boys who have been looking at visual language in their current unit of inquiry.
Paintings by April Campbell sharing the stories of the Anmatyer people from the Ti Tree Community will be exhibited
in The Delmar Gallery 6th to 9th November. Opening night is on the 6th November at 6.00pm. The exhibition also
showcases exploratory photographs by Trinity students on service week sharing their experiences of working within the
Ti Tree community. We will only have an opportunity for our classes on Friday 7th October to visit the exhibition and I
would like to encourage parents to visit the exhibition with their boys over the weekend.
Ronnie Pratt | Visual Arts Teacher, Junior School
In connection with their unit of inquiry ‘Celebrations’ Year 1 spent time in
the art room with me and we talked about my German Christmas traditions
passed down to me from my mother. The boys entered the room to the
sound of hand-bells ringing and watched a video of children playing a
Christmas song using their bells. They then looked at images of German
style Christmas trees lit with candles and I told them about my mother’s
memories of Christmas in their big old Potsdam house in Germany.
The doors to the Christmas room were closed on Christmas Eve and
the tree was decorated by her mother in secret. When it was dark the
doors were opened to reveal a huge Christmas tree lit with candles. The
experience was very special and beautiful Christmas music accompanied
the opening of presents. I also showed them some of the wooden German
Christmas decorations that I use on my Christmas tree. The boys then had a fun
time pressing coils of clay into small cup moulds to create a bell shape which they
will decorate next week.

Ti Tree community is located north of Alice Springs in the
township of Ti Tree. The population of Ti Tree and surrounds
is approximately 400. Indigenous languages spoken include
Anmatyerr, Warlpiri and Kaytetye. This exhibition acknowledges
the traditional custodians of the Ti Tree area and honours the
elders both past, present and future for they hold the memories,
the traditions, the culture and hopes of Indigenous Australia.
The paintings that are exhibited are by the artist April Campbell
and share the stories of the Anmatyer people from the Ti Tree
community. They tell their stories of their land, traditions and way
of life.
The exhibition also showcases exploratory photographs by
Trinity students on service week sharing their experiences
of working within the Ti Tree community. As part of our long
standing relationship with Ti Tree School, Trinity students spent a
week as teacher's aids helping with group work, PE lessons and
one on one reading tuition. In their spare time after classes they
explored the surrounding landscapes as well as experimenting
with photographic techniques.
CHARITY BASKETBALL SHOOT-A-THON
On Friday the 14th November, there will be a
charity shoot-a-thon at School. As was the case
a couple of years ago all proceeds will be shared

participating can get family and friends to sponsor
them. Boys who raise the most money have the
