JUNIOR SCHOOL THE WEEKLY BULLETIN OF TRINITY GRAMMAR SCHOOL JUNIOR SCHOOL MICHAELMAS TERM | BULLETIN VI FRIDAY 14TH NOVEMBER 2014 FROM THE MASTER OF THE JUNIOR SCHOOL “And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is pure and blameless until the day of Christ.” Philippians 1:9-10 REMEMBRANCE DAY 2014 Dear Parents and Friends of the Junior School, It has been pleasing to be able to congratulate the increasing number of boys who have recently received a Silver, Gold and even Platinum Award. At this time of the year boys who have been diligent at gaining white cards are now being recognised for their consistent good behaviour. The boys are often reminded that even though the certificate is physically light, it carries a weight of responsibility. As the boys bring their awards home, please continue to congratulate them and tell them how proud you are of them. Please also remind them to keep up these positive attitudes and actions. It was good to see the boys in the Resource Centre at lunchtime on Monday, 10th November , as audience members for a Spelling Bee Final. Boys choosing to give up playtime to support their fellow students is commendable. Congratulations to all finalists, it is quite a skill to be able to answer questions of this nature, a skill that can pay dividends as you move ahead in your schooling. Well done to Kyle Tran (3A) and Keagan Tran (4E) co-winner of the Junior Division and to Joshua Tran (5J) winner of the Senior Division. On Wednesday, morning, the Junior School boys and staff took part in a very dignified and meaningful Remembrance Ceremony. The boys displayed impeccable manners and thanks to Mr Bishop and the Catafalque Party who added to the significance of the occasion. I do hope that the boys gained a deeper understanding of the sacrifices made by servicemen and women, along with the fact that the attributes of courage, mateship, determination and loyalty should be aspired by all. Remember to play with determination, demonstrating good sportsmanship and team work. Yesterday morning the Head Master was able to pay a special visit to the Pre-K – 2 boys. Several months ago Jack Cooper (PKW) decided he wanted to raise some money for the Centenary Aquatic Centre. This was in response to a flyer that was sent home. Jack has been diligent in completing odd jobs for family and friends outside of the home. He was able to hand over just over $100.00. Well done Jack! I am sure that he along with many other boys will enjoy using the pool in the years ahead. Simon Kelly | Master of the Junior School Miss Astle has indicated that she will finish her time at Trinity at the end of this School Year. For many it is considered a major stepping stone on the way to becoming a young man. It is important that all Year 6 boys are given every opportunity to make a strong start in Year 7 and are able to maintain a sense of belonging and purpose, which are important elements of their continued growth and development at Trinity. During this week and next, Year 6 boys are participating in a range of activities that will build upon previous transition events conducted during the year, including the Year 6 Parent Information Evening, presentations from the Director of Studies, parent and son breakfasts, the ‘Buildings, Routines, People’ programme, and meetings with Middle School Housemasters. The activities over the next two weeks involve Year 6 boys being exposed to the co-curricular life of the Middle School as well as participating in discussions about the pastoral and House system. Orientation Day on Friday 21st November will also be a wonderful opportunity for Year 6 boys to experience the expectations and responsibilities associated with daily life in the Middle School. It is hoped that these transition activities provide Year 6 boys with a sense of reassurance and excitement about the challenges and opportunities that await them. Young Jack Cooper (Pre-K) wanted to contribute to the development of our Aquatic Centre, so with his parents’ encouragement he worked doing odd jobs throughout the year to save $101.50 in order do his part in making his School a better place. This is quite an achievement on many levels, but none more so than the fact that Jack was committed and passionate enough to care about his School’s future. We are all very proud of Jack for his initiative and donation. As the Head Master and I have said many times… ‘Many hands make light work; many donating will provide for our boys now and into the future.’ Kick off 2015 with tickets to the Trinity Sports Cocktail Reception. The two men, senior executives in a major health fund, went on a day walk in the Blue Mountains, became lost, and after the assistance of helicopters, Police Rescue, Ambulance Special Casualty Teams, and State Emergency Services they were located some 36 hours later than their planned return. They had not assessed the risk of their walk in the bush. With no route plan and just a general conversation with family, they set off without registering their walk with authorities, with no map, no spare food and no emergency beacon despite heading into a canyon deep in the National Park. By contrast, the last hike undertaken by Adrian, in year 6 at Junior School, and leading two cubs, he had passive adult supervision but led the hike with a route plan, registered the walk with National Parks listing all the party with their medical needs and the route and time of the walk, had a map and compass, remained on a marked trail, had reserve food and first aid kit, and through his party maintained regular contact with a leader describing progress and location for a short walk at the edge of the National Park and urban area. Needless to say Adrian’s hike was a great success and enjoyed by all. In Scouting, young people learn by doing. This means that we do everything in the form of activities. Activities, run using the Scout Method, are the way scouts take their personal journey. The last two weeks has seen the Cubs and Scouts being recognised for their achievements through the awarding of badges. Looking at a Cub or Scout in his uniform you can see his interests and his proficiencies. He wears his skills on his sleeve and can be called upon to assist using those skills, be it first aid, construction, water safety, water activities, the environment or air activities. These skills, put into practice by scouts, enable them to undertake adventurous activities with confidence and proficiency. Scouting is traditionally associated with specific outdoor skills, such as camping and bushcraft survival. The Adventure Skills are the means by which the primary hard skills involved in scouting are learnt and the young person completes these skills in a comprehensive competency-based framework. personal progression in different areas, even those one would not necessarily associate with scouting. There are currently 31 Proficiency Badges based on individual youth member’s hobbies and interests in Scouts and more in Cubs. They can be used to acquire a new interest/ hobby/ skill or develop ones they already have and require Scouts to commit 10 hours of effort over 4 months. Cub Achievement Badges these past weeks were awarded to Jake Paraskevopoulos for levels 1 and 2 in Literature, Art & Design, Entertainer and Music as well as Cooking level 1. Christian Schiller was awarded his Level 1 Badges in Cyclist, Cooking and Art & Design. Kelvin Kong has been awarded Level 1 Cooking and Sports. Scouts were also busy with Kurtis Kastorina being awarded his Team and Individual Sport proficiency badge as well as his Animal Keeper badge. Aston Forster was awarded proficiency badges in Art, Music and Team Sport as well as Pioneer Badges in Water Safety and Emergencies. Meanwhile Adrian McManus was awarded proficiency badges in Modeller, Art, Animal Keeper, Collector and Communications. Most impressively, Adrian also completed his Citizenship Badge thus qualifying him for the Pioneer Badge with Red Lanyard. A highly commendable effort and with Adrian already completed his blue Explorer Environment and Patrol Activity, Adrian is well on his way to achieving his Explorer Badge All students interested in Scouts are welcome at 3rd Summer Hill (Trinity Grammar) – the Group is currently running programs for all Trinity boys from 7.5 years up to 10.5 years (Cubs) and 10 years up to 15 years (Scouts). Expect the unexpected! 8 > Junior School News | 14 November 2014 www.trinity.nsw.edu.au Timely Reflections… By Mr Ron Ogier (1966 – 1994) and (1997 – present) It was in November 1966 that I entered the Trinity Grammar School War Memorial Chapel for the first time. I had come to the School for my interview with the Head Master, Mr James Wilson Hogg, who, I recollect, met me at Summer Hill station, and brought me to the School. Whether by design or accident, the first building he took me to was the Chapel. Struck immediately by its beauty of proportion, design and polished wood work and stained glass, I have loved it ever since. It is a building full of many memories concerning the School, ranging from the Junior and Senior Chapel services, which when the School was much smaller, were held four times a week in the division of Senior and Junior Chapels. Carol Services, Palm Sunday Services, Founder’s Day—all were and some still are significant times of worship in the Chapel. Other occasions such as weddings, baptisms and funerals—some of members of the Trinity community who died full of years, others, tragically cut down in their youth— also contributed meaningful emotions over the years. On several occasions concerts and dramatic performances were held in the Chapel: Andre Obey’s Noah being perhaps the most moving. The Chapel was a fitting setting, its vast wooden roof sheltering the nave like an upturned boat being a most appropriate reminder of the ark depicted in the play! Two other occasions of note were the occasions when the ABC recorded a full Chapel service for telecasting on its religious programme. On a very personal note, I often used to sit for a few minutes during a spare period in the quiet stillness of this lovely structure, drawing strength from its spiritual ambience. Thus the service last Friday when the OTU held their Remembrance Day service in conjunction with the dedication of the Year 12 Cadets for 2015 was again a moving tribute to the men of our community who gave their lives in the wars of the last Century, while inspiring the young men in Cadets www.trinity.nsw.edu.au to ponder and reflect on the sacrifice these men have made, and to resolve to give of themselves in a true fashion of servant leadership in Cadets. The Chapel stands at the north-east corner of the Quadrangle. Perhaps it does not always impinge on the consciousness of the School Community as we go about our daily round, but the Chapel is there, a beautiful and noble building. It is a lucky school that has things of beauty which may influence its inhabitants, however subconsciously they may be implanted, so that they may take away worthwhile memories. Trinity’s War Memorial Chapel fulfils that requirement, for which we thankfully and prayerfully say Detur Gloria Soli Deo. left to right: Though sometimes obscured, the Chapel is nonetheless always there.
