NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2014
Well here we are, at the end of October already. I don’t know
about you, but as I get older time seems to speed by faster
than ever, and now once again Christmas is just round the
corner, and then it will be the New Year, and we will have to
get used to ‘2015’. I know you will want to know what is going
on in our town during the festive season, so I have included
a Christmas section at the front of the magazine to whet your
appetite. There are so many events over Christmas; we even
have our very own Christmas Tree Festival at St Andrew’s
Church, and - after last year’s brilliant inaugural event – the
residents of St Lawrence Lane will once again be putting on
their very own live street advent calendar.
Not that Christmas is the only topic we cover in this edition.
Bea Dunscombe arrived back from her travels and managed
to find time to write about her trip, before saying goodbye and
heading off to University. And it’s goodbye too from H.Thorn as
we publish the concluding part of her memories. We are very
grateful to her for enabling us to include such a fascinating
account of our town in the 1920s.
So, as the nights draw in, and you feel like
spending a cosy evening at home, settle down
with a cup of tea, or even some mulled wine,
and enjoy this latest issue. My thanks to you all
for your continued support, and my warmest
wishes to everyone for a Merry Christmas.

The Ashburton Singers present a varied
and evocative programme of music for the
Christmas season to include accompanied and
unaccompanied carolds old and new.
The oldest texts such as Sir Christemas date
from the fifteenth century and, while some
of the melodies are equally ancient there
are also beautiful contemporary settings by
Michael Head (The Little Road to Bethlehem),
Bob Chilcott (Shepherd’s Carol) and Morten
Lauridson (O Magnum Mysterium).
The programme also includes the lovely “Here
is the Little Door” by Herbert Howells alongside
music from the watchmen of old London and
shepherds in the fields, tender nativity lullabies
and high-spirited wassailing songs. In several
of our best loved carols, the audience will also
have the opportunity to raise their voices and
join with choir, organ and thrilling descant!

Ashburton Community Enterprise:
SHAPING A FUTURE FOR
KENWYN HOUSE
We are intending to breathe new life into Kenwyn
House and its grounds. Our vision is to re-introduce
the much loved community allotments which
used to be an integral part of the site and create a
community orchard. To complement the activity in
the grounds, Kenwyn House will be open throughout
the day and early evening offering an extensive
programme of events, drop–in workshops, learning
programmes and classes for all ages.
We see Kenwyn becoming an inspirational, beautiful
place where people can come together and do great
things, a place that everybody can use and feel part
of something special.
At a time when a Neighbourhood Plan for Ashburton
is being developed we believe there is an opportunity
to involve the local community in a dialogue about
how to retain Kenwyn as a resource that celebrates
the strengths and meets the needs of the town. We
propose reusing the site as a community run asset
to create permanently affordable housing for rent,
workspace and community facilities.
To this end we are in the process of developing
ASHBURTON COMMUNITY ENTERPRISE to take
on Kenwyn under a short term lease from Devon
County Council so we can maintain and safeguard
the building whilst the future of Adult Social Care
sites in Devon is being resolved.
Once the lease is agreed we will undertake an
extensive community engagement programme with
residents, community organisations and funders
to develop a mixed use plan for the site aimed at
addressing identified local housing, employment
and community needs.
Ashburton Community Enterprise @ Kenwyn
(ACE@K) is the brainchild of two Ashburton families
the Cardons and Patels who have developed
ACE@K as a not for profit venture.
We all moved to Ashburton to be part of a
community and have been involved in many
local projects. We see Kenwyn House as
becoming an inspirational place capitalising
on the enthusiasm, entrepreneurialism and
resourcefulness of local people.
We see ACE@K as a creative community led project
building on the assets that are already found within
Ashburton mobilising individuals, associations and
institutions to come together and thrive creating a
place that nourishes a sense of belonging throughout
the community, especially amongst the younger and
older generations.
Our mission is to PIONEER - INNOVATE RELEARN – INSPIRE promoting new connections
and collaborations.

THE GENERATIONS FIGHT BACK
Chuley Road Masterplan Consultation
Young and old users of Ashburton Library are
fighting its threatened closure. The town, which
has had a library for over a hundred years, is
faced with losing it in the current wave of costcutting by Devon County Council.
But townsfolk have rallied round and formed a
Friends of Ashburton Library group to keep their
beloved institution alive.
Photo © DNPA
07855 307556
Eight year-old Evie-May Best joined her grandma
seventy-nine year-old Brenda Best, and ninety
year-old Gillian Manton (left) in registering their
support. How? By borrowing books. Evie has
already notched up over 100 titles and gained
an award for a book review. Her favourites? The
Famous Five.
“I would be really sad if the library closed” said
Evie, “I wouldn’t be able to get to Newton Abbot
so often”. Her grandma Brenda agreed, “I like
biographies. I live at Holne and the library visit is
a highlight of my week. My motto is: ‘Forget the
world and read a book’”. Retired farmer Gillian
regularly uses the library to feed her lively curiosity
for history, “Reading is my main entertainment,”
she said.
Now the Friends group has joined forces with
Ashburton Post Office to implement a move into
the old sorting office at the rear of the building.
“It makes perfect sense to amalgamate two
key elements in the town, both threatened with
closure,” said Friends spokesman Michael
Cranmer. “By relocating round the corner we
save heavy rent, rates, and maintenance costs,
and help bring people into the Post Office. It’s
beneficial to all of us. This really will be a new
chapter in the history of the Library, Post Office,
and Ashburton,” he said, “but we still need to fight
hard to fund and keep our librarian. Your Library
Needs You, and You Need Your Library”.

October sees the publication of a second draft of the
Chuley Road Masterplan.
This site is identified in the National Park Authority’s
Local Plan, as a 3.5 hectare site for mixed use
redevelopment including housing, commercial and
employment uses and public car parking. It was
identified in response to a number of the larger
landowners wishing to redevelop.
We received a clear view from the community that
this redevelopment shouldn’t be piecemeal, but
should be a comprehensive scheme across the
whole of Chuley Road. Dartmoor National Park
Authority therefore commissioned a Masterplan
for the site; this will be a blueprint for development
and once approved any applications must place
their piece in the wider Masterplan ‘jigsaw’. The
Masterplan will therefore set general principles
for developing the site, which reflect community
priorities for the site, balanced with what is feasible
to deliver. Chuley Road is an area with limited land
and development value, so the Masterplan itself is
only one part of the picture for tackling town-wide
issues, such as traffic and parking problems.
Redevelopment of this site presents some major
challenges such as flooding problems, limited
highway access and many different landowners
– balanced with this is a ‘wish list’ of issues the
redevelopment could tackle, such as flooding,
traffic and parking, and supporting new and existing
businesses. The area has played an important role
in the history of Ashburton and needs to be treated
sensitively - redevelopment is a real opportunity
to improve this area, creating better pedestrian
connections and improving the setting of some of
the high quality buildings from its past railway use.
The second draft responds wherever possible
to comments made at the previous consultation.
The aim being to have a Masterplan which clearly
guides the development of the area, but is flexible
to ensure it can be delivered. The draft is available
widely in the town and online at www.dartmoor.gov.

ONE FOR THE YOUNG AT HEART
from Brooksy
The Half Wit
A man owned a small farm on
Dartmoor. The Social Services
claimed he wasn’t paying proper
wages to his employees and sent an
official to interview the man.
“I need a list of your employees
and how much you pay them,”
demanded the official.
“Well,” replied the farmer, “There’s my farm-hand
who’s been with me for 3 years. I pay him £200 a
week plus free room and board. My cook has been
here for 18 months, I pay her £150 a week plus free
room and board. Then there’s the half wit who works
about 18 hours a day every day and does about
90% of all the work around here. He makes about
£10 per week, pays for his own room and board and
I buy him a bottle of whiskey every Saturday night.
He also sleeps with my wife occasionally.”
“That’s the man I want to talk to, the half wit,” says
the official.
“That would be me”, replied the farmer.

TEEN LIFE
Six months volunteering in Cambodia and travelling
in Vietnam, Laos, Thailand and Myanmar (Burma)
has been the most incredible experience. From
teaching in the rural Schools of Cambodia to the
spectacular golden temples of Myanmar, not once
did the diverse cultures, breath-taking scenery and
joyous people of South East Asia fail to astound me.
Teaching underprivileged children has been
unbelievably rewarding. Despite having next to
nothing, my students had such a positive and
enthusiastic attitude. As well as working with
determination, they were by far the most polite,
happiest and most delightful children I have ever
met. Their grins and laughter were enormously
contagious.
I went there
to teach
children
English and
improve
their future
prospects.
However,
I soon
realised
that I was
learning
more from
my students and their families than I could ever
have expected, they truly were an inspiration.
I went on to Vietnam, which was wealthier than
Cambodia, but it certainly didn’t lack in its culture.
Trekking through the stunning Sapa Mountains and
rice fields, and seeing the famous Halong Bay was
incredible. Laos was very mountainous: swimming
in turquoise lagoons and under waterfalls! In
Thailand we were able to do the signature Elephant
jungle treks! We also spent a long time relaxing
on the paradise islands in the south: crystal clear
waters, palm trees and snorkelling. Myanmar was
definitely a highlight. This country has only recently
been opened for tourists, so we were quite a
spectacle! For the time that we were there, we were
treated like celebrities! It was completely out of this
world - like travelling back in time:
dusty tracks, ox and carts and
ancient temples.
It has been an unforgettable,
remarkable and exhilarating
experience and I am hoping
to return to the school again
in December, but before then

Dave and Margaret were frying at
The Red Mullet for the last time on
Friday 10th October
We came to Ashburton from Northamptonshire
16 years ago to have a change of career, Dave a
maths teacher and Margaret working in logistics.
To buy The Red Mullet was right for us, as was
Ashburton. We arrived one Sunday morning
to view the shop. Having had breakfast at The
Green Ginger and a good chat with the owner
of The Red Mullet, we then went to buy a paper.
Each person we passed either nodded or said
“Good Morning” and we thought then, “This is
the town for us.” We have been happy here
ever since.
The job was new to us. After a steep learning
curve we loved it, the past 16 years have gone
so quickly.
We thank all the staff who have helped us run
and make a successful business, you all know
who you are - many, many thanks.
A big thank you to all our customers for custom,
friendship and lots of fun over the years.
And now to retierment or a gap year of fun!
We wish the
new owners
Roger and
Louisa our
very best
wishes with
their new
venture.
See you
all around
Ashburton.

Localeyes Opticians – Professional Eye Care without the need to travel
As December approaches most people are thinking about Christmas, but just take a moment
to try and imagine what it would be like if you couldn’t see to read the cards from friends and
family – or maybe read the emails. You could even miss out on Skype calls because your
vision is no longer very good! It is so important to have Regular Sight Tests.
Sight gradually declines throughout life and the risk of developing eye disease increases with age.
Cataracts: treatable with surgery with usually very good outcomes in restoring sight.
Glaucoma: diagnosed at any age, but is four times more likely for 80 year olds.
Age Related Macular Degeneration: leading cause of visual impairment, affecting more than
600,000 people in the UK.
Evidence suggests that over 50% of sight loss in the UK is due to preventable or treatable
causes and so it is very important to have your eyes examined regularly.
At Localeyes Opticians, right here in Ashburton, you will always see the same optometrist,
Paul Berwick, and there will be plenty of time to discuss any eye related issues you may have
with him, as well as conducting a thorough eye examination and sight test.
Being independent, we like to concentrate on offering something a little different from the
multiples. The practice strives to offer service for the individual and welcomes both private
and NHS patients. We supply glasses ranging from the unusual to retro, from designer to
traditional. Please pop in and take a look.
If you are over 60 you are entitled to a FREE NHS SIGHT TEST, but if not we will only charge you
£10.00, instead of the usual £25.00 fee, if you spend £100.00 or more on a new pair of glasses.
Plus throughout December and January we are offering 25% off the price of any frame in
the practice. Why not call in to 8 West Street and book your appointment today, or call us
now on 01364 654531.

WILDLIFE DIARY
By naturalist and
conservationist
PETER EXLEY
So what’s nature ever done for
us then?
It’s a classic scene in Monty
Python’s Life of Brian when Reg asks his fellow
conspirators of the Romans “what have they ever
given us in return?” The answers come thick and
fast… “the aqueduct… sanitation… roads, irrigation,
medicine, education, health… and the wine”.
It’s a question posed by Tony Juniper in his
excellent book on what nature does for us, and
the answer he comes up with is “well, pretty much
everything”. It’s a fascinating read and one that I
would recommend for anyone wanting an insight
into how dependent we really are upon nature for
everything we depend upon to live - our water, our
food, our climate, our health, our economy. And it’s
a book that I would make essential reading for any
politician, journalist, economist or business CEO,
for it sets out both fascinating facts about how
integral to all aspects of our everyday life a healthy
planet is, and frightening insights into just how
much we are putting our own future at risk.
Take soil. Did you know that across vast areas of
land, soil is being lost ten to 40 times faster than
it is being formed? That an estimated 25 million
acres of crop land is degraded or lost every year?
Over 90 per cent of our food depends on good
functioning soil.
We hear about the loss of honey bees, but one
trillion dollars of the world’s economy is dependent
on pollination by animals. Nitrogen pollution costs
us 70 billion euros a year in Europe. Half our
oxygen is produced by phytoplankton in our oceans
yet they have declined by 40%. Worried now? I
certainly am.
But Juniper offers positive facts too - whilst the cost
to our economy of mental illness in England alone
is £105 billion a year, it costs just £630 million to
maintain our parks and green spaces, yet these
are often the first to face cuts in an age of austerity.
By using natural well-managed catchments to store
and filter its freshwater rathan than build treatment
works, New York saves 500 million dollars a
year. And countries that have made a healthy
environment core to their economy, like Costa
Rica, see not only doubling of wealth but some of
the happiest people on the planet. Coincidence?
So whilst it might seem a bit bah humbug to talk
doom and gloom as we head into this winter
season of goodwill, I thought I would suggest
3 simple and perhaps fun things to give and do
this Yuletide:
60
To advertise in
• Buy Tony Juniper’s book, read it - and pass it on
to someone you think should read it;
• Turn off the TV, put away your phone / tablet
/ gizmo and go for a walk in nature with family
or friends - and why not raise a toast to nature?
“Thanks nature, for everything”;
• And Vote for Bob - Bob’s a cheeky red squirrel
who’s running his own election campaign, because
he doesn’t think nature is taken seriously by our
politicians. Nearly 100,000 people have voted for
him already. So if you think that seeing as nature
does so much for us it deserves much greater
support, why don’t you Vote for Bob too?

BRENDA CASE
Brenda Case passed away this summer on
August 29th having celebrated her 106th
birthday in February. Many local people will
remember her for her various activities around
the town - mostly for the involvement she had in
pre-school children. She was my neighbour for
many years at Bowling Green and I remember her
running a small play group single handed at the
age of 80 (when health and safety came along
and put an end to that!)
She had many hobbies and pastimes in those
days, enjoying trips out to the theatre and taking
painting classes. She kept busy and always
looked very smart.
She lived at Bowling green for nearly 50 years.
Just after reaching 103 she moved away to live
near her daughter and family in Gloucester.
Brenda will be well remembered by many.

Karen Turner
As most people will know this year we as a nation
are commemorating the outbreak of World War l,
said to be the war to end all wars.
The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal was founded
in the aftermath of this terrible conflict by a group of
disabled ex-servicemen under the guidance of Major
George Howson, and has grown into the powerful
and successful movement that it is today.
Every year on the Eleventh Day of the Eleventh
Month, we remember the fallen in all wars and
conflicts, and, while we salute the dead, the RBL
is about the living, the men and women who have
survived the various wars and conflicts with terrible
physical and mental injuries.
I have the honour to be the newly appointed Poppy
Appeal Organiser for the Ashburton branch of the
RBL and, with your help, I will continue, to raise
money to help our ex-service men and women.
If you would like to help, maybe by standing on
a cold street corner selling poppies, or house to
house collections please get in touch.

ASHBURTON CARERS’
SUPPORT GROUP
ASHBURTON IN THE 1920s
(the little place where we wet the tea)
Very many thanks to H. Thorn for allowing us to
publish her wonderful memories of Ashburton life
in the early twentieth century. Here’s the final
fascinating instalment!
1930 dawned bleak and bitterly cold. The line of
unemployed men at Bottom Town grew longer,
their faces more pinched and clothes more
threadbare. In spite of the poverty in Ashburton,
the town managed to send money to the north
east of England to the distressed areas whose
situation was even worse. As one woman in the
town said, “You can always see someone worse
off than yourself.” Ex-servicemen shook their
heads gravely and predicted another war with
Germany. On the radio we heard Hitler ranting and
demanding more territory for Germany. Winston
Churchill said we should prepare for war and
he was ignored and called a war-mongerer. The
Prince of Wales, who promised the Welsh miners
help, went off to Greece holidaying with his
friends and with Mrs Wallis Simpson who would
rock the monarchy.
Thus we appraoched the late 1930s and the drear
days of war. Afterwards Ashburton would never be
the same little town again.
My thanks to Max Stittes for editing this work and
Joan Bing for tirelessly typing it.
H. Thorn

Reply from O2:
Hello Mark, I'd like to inform you that we want to
bring 4G everywhere as quickly as possible. We're

Furthermore, I can see that there is a planned outage
in your home area TQ13 7LD and our engineers are
working to improve the network coverage.
We will get the network near you working as soon
as possible but it's not possible to promise exactly
when this will be. You can keep an eye on our

The skatepark was busy all summer with both local users and those from further afield coming to try it out
– and leaving impressed! One good point about it is that the concrete dries off really quickly following rain,
so rain doesn’t stop play for long! Even now (early
October) there can be over 20 users at the park late
afternoons or at the weekend.
By and large all has gone very well so far, and
hopefully the early litter problems won’t be repeated,
though not discarding bottles, wrappers etc on the
ground seems to be a huge challenge for some –
and not just those using the skatepark! We are doing
what we can about this, and also reminding users
to show consideration to other Rec users, and not to
cause problems elsewhere in town when using narrow
paths, pavements, roads etc.
Our long awaited and much needed ‘broom
cupboard’ will be installed soon, hopefully, and we
already have a brand new bench for spectators,
thanks to the Paulo Memorial Foundation.
Rollers committee members with Eileen
We are now looking for additional user group
and Peter Brewer on the new bench.
members to help out when the current core group
steps down next year. Duties won’t be onerous – the park is now up and running after all -. but we are
looking for some individuals (parents/adults and young people alike) who can offer an hour or two every
so often to ensure things keep on track. This would include keeping an eye out for litter, graffiti and
damage, and might also involve liaising with Teignbridge District Council, local schools, and sponsors or
event organisers. Ensuring that the park is swept of leaves and debris is important since these pose a risk to
users. Future events such as demonstrations, coaching sessions, a pop-up graffiti wall, live music and other
developments are all exciting possibilities for the coming year. Please get in touch, via email or Facebook if
you would like to get involved in this way. Thank you!

H
eudoxus predictions for NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2014
eavens above, how can we be landing something on a comet travelling at 40,000 knots as far away
as the moon AND still be making such an infernal mess of the planet where we live? The Taurids,
Leonids, Geminids and Ursids will be raining shooting stars upon these next two months – let’s hope this
gives us a bit of perspective, non? Meanwhile, back on earth:

h Taureans dear, do you tend to get in the way
eeling a bit off form recently? I could mention
of people’s plans or help them along? If you’ve
obscure, perhaps irrelevant heavenly bodies, but
been a bit of grumpy old thing of late, cast your eyes
let’s keep our feet on the ground. Astragalus or even
heavenward on November 5th and look out for the
ahashwaganda could be worth a punt, if you can find
Taurids – a rather modest meteor shower it’s true, dim
them – but nothing beats a decent game plan along
against the fireworks – and remember, it’s never too
with plenty of greens and a good moorland walk in
late to be nice. Spare a thought for what you’d like as

ONE FOR THE YOUNG AT HEART
from Brooksy
How to tell the sex of a fly
A woman walked into the kitchen to
find her husband stalking around
with a fly swatter.
“What are you doing?” she asked.
“Hunting flies,” he responded.
“Killed any?” she enquired.
“Yep, 3 males and 2 females,” he
replied. Intrigued, she asked “How
can you tell them apart?”
“3 were on a beer can and 2 were on the phone.”
