a couple of things we really
don’t see a lot of,” he added.
Covington said his Panther team is a little more
prepared this time around,
and is confident if it plays its
game, can make it one more
round.
“We had to adjust a little
bit, and really our whole
week offensively was against
their 3-5 (in Week 8),” he

yards, seven TDs) and junior
Nate Prewiit (98 carries, 689
yards, nine TDs), Ell-Saline’s success somewhat has
hinged on the play of senior
quarterback Louie Arceo.
“Arceo is good, athletic
and fast,” Covington said.
“And he throws the ball
well. We were surprised with
how well they threw the ball
against us. We weren’t really
looking for that, but everything kind of goes through
him.”

Tech in the Big 12’s inaugural

McCrane salvaged as
many points as he could,
connecting on 4 of 6 fieldgoal attempts, including an
important 32-yarder with
4:21 remaining in the fourth
quarter.
But Waters truly saved the
day by completing 22 of 34
passes and a touchdown.
“It’s just doing your job,”
Waters said. “When they call
a play run or pass I just have
to do my job ... I felt good
throwing the football. I had
no clue it was 400 yards or
anything like that. I was so
involved in the game. It was
just frustrating to get the ball
and drive down to the goal
line and not get in the end
zone. We are normally the
best at that.”
Waters’ main target was
Lockett, who caught 10
passes for 196 yards, joining
Quincy Morgan as the only
two K-State players to top
1,000 receiving yards in two
seasons.
Combined with a specialteams TD and four turnovers
on defense, that was enough.
But the game was much
closer than it could have
been. If not for an unforced
fumble by West Virginia
running back Wendell
Smallwood at the goal line in
the first quarter and several
questionable throws by Clint
Trickett, who completed 12
of 25 passes for 112 yards
with two interceptions, KState might not have won.

“They’re a really good
football team. They spread
it out and make you miss
