ON DECK
UCLA will conclude its opening four-game homestand against Long Beach State on Sunday, Nov 23. Game time is
7 p.m. The Bruins last played Long Beach State on Dec. 18, 2012, securing an 89-70 win over the 49ers in Pauley
Pavilion. UCLA has recorded a 12-1 all-time record against Long Beach State. The 49ers’ lone victory in the alltime series came on the final day of the 76 Classic (Anaheim) on Nov. 29, 2009 (Long Beach State 79, UCLA 68).
FAMILIAR COACHES: UCLA’s Steve Alford and Long Beach State’s Dan Monson have seen their teams face
each other prior to their current head coaching roles. Alford served as Iowa’s head coach from 1999-00
through 2006-07, the same eight seasons in which Monson was head coach at Minnesota. In their head-tohead meetings as Big Ten foes, Alford’s Iowa teams went 9-5 against Monson’s Minnesota squads.
PRIOR TO LONG BEACH: Long Beach State senior guard Tyler Lamb played for UCLA for two seasons (201011, 2011-12) and the first game of the 2012-13 campaign before opting to transfer out of the program.
Lamb averaged 5.8 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game in 68 contests (34 starts) at UCLA. As a
sophomore in 2011-12, he played in all 33 games (32 starts), recording 9.0 ppg and 3.6 rpg.
THURSDAY’S WIN
UCLA cruised past Nicholls State, 107-74, on Thursday evening in Pauley Pavilion. Bryce Alford scored a team-high
28 points and had a career-best 13 assists (one turnover). Kevon Looney had his second consecutive double-double
(12 points, 14 rebounds). Tony Parker had 20 points and seven rebounds, while Norman Powell scored 23 points
to round out UCLA’s double-figure scorers. UCLA led the visiting Colonels, 60-29, at halftime.
THREE STRAIGHT WINS
The Bruins have opened the season with a 3-0 mark for the third straight season. UCLA has twice reached the
100-point plateau this season, scoring a season-best 113 points in a season-opening win over Montana State
(113-78) on Nov. 14 before defeating Nicholls State, 107-74, on Nov. 20. In 40 games under head coach Steve
Alford, UCLA has reached the 100-point mark five times (includes three games last season).
CENTURY MARK: With 113 points in the team’s season opener, UCLA logged its highest single-game point
total since defeating Wyoming, 113-62, on Dec. 23, 2008. The program record for points scored in the team’s
season opener came in UCLA’s 134-101 win against UC Irvine on Nov. 23, 1990.
SCORE AND DISTRIBUTE
Bryce Alford enters Sunday’s game as the Bruins’ leading scorer (21.0 ppg) and has averaged 10.7 assists per
game. The sophomore from Albuquerque, N.M., has amassed a 5.3-to-1 assist-turnover ratio through UCLA’s three
games. He had a career-best 13 assists and just one turnover in UCLA’s 107-74 win against Nicholls State on
Thursday night. Alford also had 12 assists and three turnovers against Montana State on Nov. 14. A Pac-12 AllFreshman Team selection last year, Alford has made 11 of 22 three-pointers and all 12 of his free throw attempts.
LOONEY LIVING LARGE
Kevon Looney, a 6-foot-9 forward from Milwaukee, Wis., has become the first UCLA freshman to ever record at
least two double-doubles in his first three collegiate games. In the Bruins’ season opener, he netted 20 points, nine
rebounds and three assists. Two nights later, he logged his first collegiate double-double (17 points, 14 rebounds)
and dished three assists. Against Nicholls State last Thursday, Looney finished with 12 points and 14 rebounds.
THAT WAS FAST: Kevon Looney became UCLA’s fourth player in the last 22 seasons to have registered a
double-double in either of his first two games as a freshman. Charles O’Bannon (Nov. 27, 1993), Kevin Love
(Nov. 8, 2007) and Kyle Anderson (Nov. 9, 2012) had double-doubles in their first games as UCLA freshmen.
SENIOR LEADER
Norman Powell, who has played in each of UCLA’s last 108 games, has averaged 20.3 points and 4.3 rebounds
per game. He scored a game-leading 25 points against Montana State (Nov. 14) and had 23 points versus Nicholls
State (Nov. 20). Powell, a 6-foot-4 guard from San Diego, has shot 50 percent from the field (18 of 36 total
attempts) and 50 percent from three-point range (7 of 14). Over the course of four seasons at UCLA, Powell has
totaled 846 career points (7.8 ppg), 269 rebounds (2.5 rpg) and 143 assists (1.3 apg).
DOUBLE FIGURES
Six UCLA players scored in double figures in the season opener versus Montana State, marking the first time the
Bruins had accomplished that feat since March 4, 2000 (overtime win against Stanford, 94-93). UCLA previously
had six or more double-figure scorers in a 40-minute game on Dec. 19, 1998 (UCLA def. CSUN, 114-97). Seven
Bruins scored in double figures in UCLA’s 17-point non-conference win against CSUN in 1998.

YEAR TWO
Steve Alford has entered his second season as UCLA’s head coach and his 24th year as a college basketball head

highly successful seasons at New Mexico. He has led his teams to at least 22 wins in each of the last seven years,
including at least 28 wins each of the last three years (85-22 record over the previous three seasons).
MILESTONES: Steve Alford celebrates his 50th birthday on Sunday, Nov. 23. The Bruins’ head coach has

its game Sunday against Long Beach State with five players currently averaging at least 13.0 points per game.
WHO’S BACK
UCLA has returned three of its eight primary players from last year’s team – senior guard Norman Powell, junior
forward/center Tony Parker and sophomore guard Bryce Alford. Each of those three key returners played in all
37 games for UCLA one year ago, helping the Bruins finish the season with a 28-9 record, including a Pac-12
Tournament title and the program’s first appearance in the NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16 since 2008. Powell is
UCLA’s top returning scorer, having registered 11.4 points per game in 2013-14.
NORMAN POWELL: UCLA’s most veteran player, Powell has competed in all 107 games since the start of
the 2011-12 season. The senior hailing from San Diego, Calif., averaged just 5.3 points per game in his first
two seasons before netting 11.4 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game last season.
TONY PARKER: A 6-foot-9 forward/center from Atlanta, Parker made significant strides on the court in
2013-14. He averaged 6.9 points and 4.4 rebounds per game (17.2 minutes per game) after having played
sparingly as a freshman in 2012-13 (2.4 ppg, 1.2 rpg in 6.3 minutes per game).
BRYCE ALFORD: Selected as one of five players to last season’s Pac-12 All-Freshman Team, Alford averaged
8.0 points, 1.8 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game in 2013-14. He played in all 37 games (making one start)
and was one of two freshmen in the nation to record over 100 assists and fewer than 50 turnovers.
NOAH ALLEN: The 6-foot-6 guard from Pacific Grove, Calif., battled back from multiple fractures to the face
(sustained Nov. 12, 2013), playing in 11 games for UCLA as a freshman in 2013-14. Allen did not see major
minutes on the court, but he was able to play in five of the Bruins’ six postseason games.
WANAAH BAIL: A 6-foot-9 forward from Houston, Texas, Bail played in 13 games as a freshman in 2013-14.

• Since 1948, no college program has produced more NBA draft selections than UCLA (112). UCLA and Kentucky
are tied for the national lead (112), followed by North Carolina (105) and Duke (82).
• UCLA has 15 former players competing in the NBA (nine of which were first-round selections). The Bruins are
one of five college programs (and the only Pac-12 school) with at least 10 former players currently in the NBA.
• Most recently, UCLA produced three first-round NBA draft picks in 2014 (Zach LaVine, Jordan Adams and Kyle
Anderson). In addition, Travis Wear has signed as a non-drafted free agent with the New York Knicks.
• Russell Westbrook and Kevin Love were taken in back-to-back selections (No. 4, No. 5) in the first round of the
2008 NBA Draft by the Seattle SuperSonics and Memphis Grizzlies, respectively.
PRESEASON PROJECTIONS
UCLA was tabbed fourth out of 12 teams in the annual Pac-12 preseason media poll,
as announced at Pac-12 Media Day in San Francisco on Oct. 23. Arizona was picked
to finish first in the conference, collecting 31 of 32 first-place votes. UCLA secured one
first-place vote. Last season, UCLA was picked to finish second (behind Arizona) and
finished second in the league race before defeating Arizona in the Pac-12 Tournament
title game. The Bruins have won the Pac-12 regular-season title in four of the last nine
seasons and won the Pac-12 Tournament most recently in 2008 and 2014.
PREDICTIONS: Members of the media have correctly picked the conference’s
regular-season winner 13 times in 22 tries. Arizona has correctly been selected
in eight of the previous 13 times it has been predicted to win the league crown.

EYES ON 1,000
Senior Norman Powell has scored 846 career points, needing 154 more to reach the 1,000 career point plateau.
Powell could become the 51st player in school history to accomplish that feat. Last season, then-sophomore
Jordan Adams hit the 1,000-point mark on March 6, 2014, in UCLA’s win at Washington (becoming the 50th
player to reach that mark). Michael Roll currently ranks 50th on UCLA’s all-time scoring list (1,021 points).
7-FOOT FRESHMAN
Freshman center Thomas Welsh, a three-year varsity letterwinner at nearby Loyola High School, enters the
program this season as UCLA’s tallest player since Ryan Hollins (7-foot-0) was a senior on the Bruins’ 2005-06
squad. Welsh and classmate Kevon Looney both played in the 2014 McDonald’s All-America Game. The resident of
Redondo Beach, Calif., was listed as the No. 5 center, nationally, in his high school class last season by Scout.com.
MOVING TO THE NBA
Four players from last season’s UCLA team – Zach LaVine, Jordan Adams, Kyle Anderson and Travis Wear –
opened the 2014-15 season on NBA rosters. UCLA was the only school last June to produce at least three NBA
first-round selections – LaVine (No. 13 to Minnesota), Adams (No. 22 to Memphis) and Anderson (No. 30 to San
Antonio). An undrafted free agent, Travis Wear made the New York Knicks’ roster after joining the program in
training camp. UCLA currently ranks top five, nationally, with 15 former players on NBA rosters.
UCLA INKS TWO STANDOUTS
High school senior guards Aaron Holiday (North Hollywood, Calif.) and Prince Ali (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) signed
National Letters of Intent during the November early signing period to attend and play basketball at UCLA. Both
players will enroll at UCLA in the fall of 2015 and begin their freshman seasons in 2015-16.
AARON HOLIDAY: A talented 6-foot-1 guard at Campbell Hall High School (North Hollywood, Calif.), Holiday
has earned All-CIF Southern Section Division 4A honors in each of his previous three seasons. Holiday has been
ranked the No. 36 player in his high school class, nationally, by Scout.com. He has also been listed No. 58 in
the nation by Rivals.com and No. 85 by ESPN.com. The younger brother of former UCLA standout Jrue Holiday
(who played for the Bruins in 2008-09), Aaron averaged over 30 points per game last season at Campbell
Hall High School before earning CIF Southern Section Division 4A Player of the Year honors.
PRINCE ALI: A versatile 6-foot-4 guard at The Sagemont School (Weston, Fla.), Ali averaged 21 points and
5.2 rebounds per game during his junior season. Ali played alongside current UCLA freshman G.G. Goloman
last season at The Sagemont School. He has been ranked the No. 29 player, nationally, in his high school
class by Rivals.com (also rated No. 38 by Scout.com and No. 46 by ESPN.com). Last season, Ali helped lead
Sagemont to a 33-1 record in a season that culminated with an appearance at the Dick’s Sporting Goods
National Tournament. In addition, Sagemont won the 2014 Class 3A state title in Florida.
